What Went Wrong With The Left?

I love this new book "All The Sad, Young Literary Men."

Here’s an excerpt from page 234 about how "the Left had failed to replace the deep culture of religion with a culture of its own. "When I attend the funerals of my social-democratic friends," the elderly editor of the journal had said, "no one knows what to do. Whereas at the funerals of religious friends, everything is minutely prescribed. It’s very comforting.""

I love the delivery of this novel. It’s the way my friends and I talk and think and act.

Why Network Announcers Stay Relentlessly Positive

Mark Purdy writes for the San Jose Mercury News: "In case you’re wondering why broadcaster Troy Aikman said he thought “the 49ers got better today [after losing by two touchdowns to Dallas],” never forget one important thing. The broadcast networks are business partners with the NFL. As such, no matter what the on-air talent says good or bad about an individual player, the biggest mission is to keep people tuning in every week, to keep the ratings up. So you will never hear an announcer say: “Man, this team is unwatchable. You might want to plan a hike next Sunday (or plan to rake leaves, if you don’t have a Girl Scout troop show up at your door with an offer to do so).” So of course Aikman is going to say the 49ers got better. His network has multiple future 49er broadcasts on the schedule."

The Cult-Like Fervor Around Arianna & Barack Obama

From The Macho Response:

"She could hardly have picked a more appropriate guru."

Ryan Tate, on The Huffington Post‘s Arianna Huffington, and her guru, John-Roger – who she sends her workers to for "training" – though he was described (by The Los Angeles Times) as "often angry, vindictive and bizarre" (just like Arianna) according to Gawker.

Well, well, well. As usual, TMR keeps saying we’re surrounded by cultists – and America is infiltrated with them – but, just like with Jim Jones and The People’s Temple, all the pundits keep saying, "Oh, no, nothing like that could be happening" and, yet, the clear-as-a-bell signs keep coming: Arianna’s sinister proclamations, outlandish tales of crazy beliefs – and stupid upside-down accusations – showing up on the website; writers committing heinous murders, and acting out in public. But very few others are saying anything – especially nothing in depth about the various connections between the various groups – except to deny (despite the evidence of all kinds) there’s any cultism at work here.

But there is cultism at work here, and it’s got a vice-like grip on the minds of the highest echelons (and I do mean the highest) of the American Left’s taste-makers and political insiders. Make no mistake about it: the cult-like fervor surrounding Barack Obama’s candidacy was no accident:

And they now have the White House.

Chabadnik Leah Kleim Knifed In San Diego

Leah calls Sunday afternoon.

"On Thursday, I got a call inviting me to San Diego for Shabbat. So I flew in. And I ended up getting stabbed?"

Luke: "What happened?"

Leah: "I was up late drinking Heinekens with the rabbi. We were playing with the knife, throwing it back and forth. It landed in my foot. The s— you’ve got to do to get a rabbi to touch you. So he bandaged me up. I went to sleep. I took a vicodin for the pain because it was killing me. I had been drinking with him so there was a lot more blood. I woke up in the morning and they unwrapped it and it was shooting everywhere. Of course they’ve got a white couch. So I went to the hospital. They cut a bunch of junk out of it. They stitched me up and sent me home."

Luke: "Did he stab you on purpose?"

Leah: "NO! We were playing. We were flinging the knife around and it landed in my foot."

Luke: "Is this a traditional pasttime for you on Shabbat?"

Leah: "NO. This was Thursday night. It was two in the morning and too many Heinekens… And now I’m limping."

Luke: "How deep did it go into your foot? Did it go right through?"

Leah: "No, it didn’t. It got an artery. The blood was coming out of it like a fountain, like a water fountain squirting everywhere."

"They told me I had to come back in seven to ten days to take ’em out. I told ’em I can’t. I’m leaving on Monday. So give me the removal kit and I’ll do it myself. So they gave it to me. I’ll have to send it to New York because they are not going to let me take it on the plane. I can’t get on the plane as it is. I don’t have any ID. I have to go through at terrorist check."

Luke: "Why don’t you have any ID?"

Leah: "Because I keep losing it and they keep taking it when they put me away somewhere special."

Luke: "When was the last time you got put away?"

Leah: "When I was in Illinois in July."

Luke: "You seem pretty mellow the past few months. You’re not blogging."

Leah: "I am very mellow. I’m taking my meds and being a mommy and being very mellow."

Luke: "Yeah. You’ve totally changed."

Leah: "Yeah, I’m staying out of trouble. Then I come to the land of sunshine and all of a sudden, bam, it hits me."

Luke: "What meds are you on?"

Leah: "I’m taking Aderrall for ADHD. I wasn’t taking it for a while. I stopped taking it again a month ago and then started again three days ago."

Luke: "Why did you stop?"

Leah: "Because I have no insurance and it’s three hundred and something bucks a month. Once you stop, you’re head goes woo hooo and you forget about it… Then when I got here, they happened to have a bottle of it laying around that one of their kids didn’t need. So they put me back on it."

"So now I’m going to the beach to get sand in my wound."

"I brought my Illinois phone with me. I figured that if he doesn’t want to pay child support, he doesn’t want to pay for his children, he doesn’t want to call his children, he doesn’t want anything, the least I can do is to give him a $2,000 roaming bill. Right? I get his bank statements every month. He’s making good money. He’s having fun. He’s partying. He’s driving a Mercedes. He’s living the good life. He can’t send my kids $100 for their birthday. So I figured he’ll pay for it this way."

Luke: "How do you like living in Crown Heights?"

Leah: "It’s a madhouse. It’s full of mad insane people. It’s kinda like going to The Addams Family. You have these insane people running around the streets with yellow flags screaming moshiach. There are fights everywhere. If you want to see untznious (immodest) women, that’s the place to go. Oh yeah, everyone wants a Crown Heights girl. Guys from Williamsburg drive through Crown Heights just to look at the girls."

Luke: "But they’re frum girls?"

Leah: "They’re frum promiscuous untznious girls."

Luke: "Ohhhh."

Wheels turn in my head.

Leah: "They’re known for being the worst. I walk around taking pictures of them."

Luke: "How do they dress?"

Leah: "Their skirts are as tight as f— and if they bend down, I think they’ll split. Their knees, some of them are covered, but barely. They act like they walked out of Hollywood. They try to act tznious but they’re not. They wear jeans underneath their skirts and say it’s because it’s cold, but the jeans are as tight at hell with seven inch stiletto heels and big long red fingernails. Every guy wants a Chabad girl? Why you haven’t?"

Luke: "I haven’t, but I’m tempted now."

Leah: "On Shabbos, they’re funny. They take walks before or after the meal. You can see the bacherim walking around just to look at the girls and the girls are walking around just to be looked at. There are certain spots on the street that they walk on that are jam packed."

"If you want good writing, go to Crown Heights for a Shabbos. You could get all the mussar in the world and more untznious things than you could imagine."

"Somebody asked me to write something about why so many frum kids are gay."

Luke: "Do you feel good about the way your life is going?"

Leah: "I’d be a lot happier if my ex fell off a tree and had a life insurance policy."

Luke: "Where do you want to live?"

Leah: "My kids love it in Crown Heights. They think it’s awesome. It’s a free-for-all. It’s not like the regular world where kids don’t get to do anything by themselves. My kid is off learning every day with some rabbi. He’s eating at his rebbe’s house. He’s running around being Mitzvah Man. There’s a video of my kid on YouTube that was on CrownHeights.info. That site hates my guts. They blew up a big picture of his chumash party. He won’t wear his tzitzit under his shirt. In Chabad, they do that. He wears his tzitzit out. He says, ‘How are people supposed to know I’m Jewish?’"

"I’ve got a new tattoo. It’s on my back beneath ‘Birchas Cohanim." It says [in Hebrew ‘Thank you God for not making me a Gentile’]. I want to get some pictures of it but I don’t think the shluchim want to do it for me. I’ll wait till I get back to New York."

Luke: "I’m just getting over the flu, so I’m going back to bed."

Leah: "Why are you always sick? It’s all in your head. Drink a Red Bull and you’ll get rid of your CFS."

I Want To Be A Rebbe II

Ari writes to Hirhurim:

I think this is a bit of a tempest in a teapot. There are some people who think that any mention of their group-identity is inherently offensive. That’s most of what I saw. There was nothing wrong with the music video. Some people thought it was funny, some did not. That’s life. There’s nothing offensive about it. The people who complained about the one usage of a swear word are overreacting and taking things out of context. The swear word was not directed at any person or group, and trying to feign offense because of it is either disingenuous or due to the inability of some people to differentiate between juxtaposition and direction.

Even if you did offend anyone, I hate to say it, but so what? If you eliminated every blog post that might offend *someone* you wouldn’t have a blog. Slifkin’s books clearly offend *some* people, does that mean you shouldn’t publish them? If someone is offended by this blog, they don’t have to read it. There’s no need to dwell on this.

RS WRITES:

My reaction to Simcha’s posting of the video was surprise NOT opposition. Most of the things that are posted on Musings seem to be at least acceptable for the whole family and their rabbi. When I saw the "swear word" pop up I realied that although it may have not been the most nefarious use of the word, nevertheless, it was out of character for this blog.

Many of you may not remember a similar "tempest" years back when Simcha posted a cartoon that contained a "swear word" in a similarly non- vulgar context. I am pretty sure Gil apologised quickly and took it down solely because of the appearance of the word that most people would be embarrased by if while they were looking at the post their local rabbi walked by and glanced over their shoulder towards their computer screen. That post also could have been described as "good fun" and a chance to laugh a little but I thing there was some CHARATA on the part of Gil.

My prediction is that this will eventually be taken down, probably after the YU appearance.

I think a good litmus test for what appears on Musings is something that you would not be emabrrassed by if your rabbi would see you looking at it.

Do not misconstrue this as being some sort of mussar that dictates that one should not do anything in life that they wouldn’t do in front of their rebbe. (Although that may be a lofty goal there may not be a person on earth that can achieve it). I have always just assumed that Hirhurim was fitting into that standard.

ZB WRITES:

Ari, nobody claims Gil is not allowed to post the video. Its his blog and he can do as he chooses. However, being the type of blog hirhurim has been for the past 4 years or so, this post is so out of character I am actually shocked Gil posted it. If anybody had this voracious need to watch this video, there are many blogs all over the internet that have posted it. Gil probably posted it because of the broader message it was trying to convey. However, I believe this message got lost by the presentation, and therefore unfortunately hirhurim’s reputation may also have been tarnished somewhat. I don’t believe this video to be an innocuous satire at the opulent lifestyle of the "Rebbes", it is a full frontal attack at them personally which as a result made many people cringe uncomfortably. While to some its a "who cares" and "lighten up", to others its utmost horror and revulsion and we should respect that. And two wrongs don’t make a right, when you equated the Slifkin fiasco with this video (even though in my opinion its apples and oranges).

TZVEE WRITES: The publication of this video is the kind of nightmare watershed event that the rebbes feared all along from the viral nature of the internet. this is not an entertainment music video. the artists who made this video spent a great deal of effort to convey a message. satirizing the lifestyle of the rich and famous is not a new theme, and this could be dismissed as a nickelback knockoff. yet i’m thinking that this application of satire and music to rebbeim with nuance and detail is at once masterful and unnerving. i’m just glad that they stopped at the beer, cadillacs and jacuzzis and didn’t hazard that, "The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap" for these rockstars.

ZALMAN WRITES: Interesting to contrast the posting of the video with the path not taken, a considered, well-written post about rebbes. While the video makes a (crude) substantive point, nearly all of the discussion has focused on the propriety of the video. A considered, well-written post probably would have offended some, but would have generated a valuable discussion.

MAIZ VZI WRITES:

Rebbe= Master, Teacher, Mentor.

What do we learn from this video?
Is there one iota of spirituality?
Does it cast Rebbes in a positive light?
As I recall (I watched it once- I won’t watch it again) it associates Rebbes with fressing, gelt, and beer-not what can be considered the finest of middos.
The hassidim are repeatedly referred as batlanim-loafers.
Yes, it’s not meant to be taken seriously, but I guarantee that anyone who watched this video will retain the image and atmosphere of mockery that is displayed.
I imagine this video will create a hopefully short-lived sensation in the frum world that uses computers. What kind of message does it transmit? Especially to youngsters.
I’m sorry Gil, It may cause an initial laugh, but at what spiritual cost?

YOELB WRITES: There are, R"L, rebbes who are associated with entitlement, privilege, luxury, throwing their weight around, brawls between groups of chassidim in connection with succession quarrels, etc.
Not to mention chassidm and even rebbes associated with even more unsavory things, so that there has to be glatt food in prison for the heimish criminals, and so on.
All of that reflects poorly on chassidim and mitnagdim alike (most non charedi Jews, let alone non-Jews can’t tell one black hat from another, let alone a streimel from a spodick) and by extension, is a black eye to all of us.

BEOWULF WRITES: After watching the video, I decided that I’d be interested in considering such a career path, to potentially become a Rebbe. But then I read in DZ’s comment that "As 99% of Rebbe’s are either directly or very closely related to the previous Rebbe, a commoner does not usually stand a chance to be a Rebbe today." Unfortunately, I am not related to any Rebbe. Someone has suggested to me that if I’m prepared to be flexible, I should consider a slightly different career path, to try to become a Conservative Rabbi. Apparently, that profession is even more lucrative than the Rebbe business, and like the Rebbe business does not require one to be too strong on the Rishonim. Is anyone aware of a similar video for that business, say "I want to be a Conservative Rabbi"?

ZB WRITES:

Gil, I think what many of us are trying to convey is that sure, to some (many?) the video seems like harmless fun, however to many serious Torah minded people (MO, centrist, and yeshivish) hirhurim is supposed to be more then that. It is supposed to be intellectually stimulating Torah forum, and a way to influence the Jewish community through intelligent and rational Torah discussions. The video really is the opposite what I believe hirhurim is all about. Also if you want the blog to be conduit for change in the greater frum community, how disillusioning many of the more chasidic oriented readers is going to help accomplish this. I understand that many if not most of the Jewish blogosphere has posted the video and therefore anybody can see if they wished, however hirhurim (and you) have always been above that. The internet for all its ability to disseminate Torah and break down borders between groups, is also notorious for snarkiness, laitzonois, and disrespecting tradition and leaders. There is a fundamental difference between poking fun at some rosh yeshiva at a purim shpiel then creating a mockery of many Rebbes and Rosh Yeshivas that for better or worse represent Yiddishkeit for a vast number of frum Jews.

I don’t think anybody would have much issue if Gil would post some YouTube video poking fun at YU. The problem is that when your attempt at humor skewers some other sect, that is when some people believe you cross the line. Also while the excesses in the Yeshiva and Chasidishe world in my opinion can be poked fun off, this video goes beyond innocent jokes and attacks Rebbe’s. Some (many?) that are known to be serious T"C and yirat shamayim. Also the juxtaposition of a the original song which is about the Rock Star life style of sex, drugs, and rock and roll with the Rebbes is a bitter pill to swallow for many. Sure it may be fun for the those unaffiliated with that group, however it is a huge slap in the face for serious chasidim and bnai yeshiva who respect them. Again, I don’t believe there is a problem with satire, but there always is a line, and I believe unwittingly Gil crossed it with this video. Again, I repeat my criticism that I believe that the broader message that hirhurim attempts to convey has gotten diluted by posting that video.

MYCROFT WRITES: How about substituting Yeshiva/Day School administrator for Conservative Rabbi-there are quite a few whoearn in excess of what the Vice President of the S earns and a few who earn in excess of what the Prez oftheUS earns.
I suspect thare are a few Orthodox pulpit Rabbis who earn more than the Fed Chairman and/or the Treasury Secretary to paraphrase Babe Ruth-""I guess these Orthodox Rabbis have been more succesful in their prognostications and policies than the Chairmanon of the Fed or Tteas. Sec."

Molestation Cases Among Orthodox Jews

NEW YORK (AP) — It started as a radio program discussion about a taboo subject: child molestation among members of the insular world of Orthodox Jews.

Since he broached the subject on his radio show this summer, says a state assemblyman, dozens of people have come forward with stories about children being molested in the Orthodox community, which strictly follows Jewish law.

Dov Hikind says as many as four people a day have come to him over the past three months with painful accounts of secrets often kept for decades, accusing more than 60 individuals.

Hikind says he would eventually consider unmasking accused sexual predators but wants to focus now on setting up a broader framework for addressing the issue.

His campaign has set off a firestorm in the Orthodox community, where people are reluctant to involve secular authorities. One rabbi said he got death threats for speaking out.

"In our community, people don’t talk about the things that they’ve come to my office" and revealed, said Hikind, himself an Orthodox Jew.

Among other faiths, the subject has meant turmoil in recent years for the Roman Catholic church. For decades, church leaders often transferred predatory clergy among parishes without telling parents or police. Victims have won millions in settlements from dioceses.

Members of a polygamous offshoot of the Mormon church have been charged with assaulting children in Texas. Children have been removed from the Arkansas compound of the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries amid allegations of beatings and sexual abuse.

Hikind said he won’t breach victims’ trust by disclosing his private exchanges to prosecutors — or to a lawyer who subpoenaed him in a civil case against a school accused of concealing abuse.

I’ve Had The Flu Since Tuesday

Here are my grades for the books, TV and movies I’ve consumed over the past five days:

* Tell Me How This Ends: General David Petraeus and the Search for a Way Out of Iraq C. This was the most disappointing book I read. It was a mess, like Iraq. The author, Linda Robinson, has no literary skills. This book drags. It was a constant struggle to get through. I had to endure all Shabbat and force myself to finish.

* Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides A

* The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio A

* Dating for Dummies by Dr. Joy Browne A

* Five Easy Pieces A

* High Plains Drifter A

* The Meaning of Life by Monty Python B

* Yes, Minister A

* Fawlty Towers A

I love this new book "All The Sad, Young Literary Men."

Much of it seemed like it is based on real life.

The Keith character seems like Keith Gessen. Lauren seems like Kristin Gore, the daughter of Al Gore. Prof. Lomaski is like Noam Chomski. Morris Binkel is like Lee Siegel. The New American is The New Republic. Debate magazine is Dissent. Cafe 1369 is 1369 Coffee House at Harvard. Judith Hestermann is Virginia Heffernan.

There’s a funny scene where Sam goes to bed with a sex columnist:

…Sam realized with a start he wasn’t hard. He was betrayed! Full of lustful thoughts, but lacking lustful deeds. Saint Augustine had written of this — impotence, rather than sinful passion, was the crowning argument in his proof that lust was evil, that it was not subject to the human will. And now behold poor Sam: It was one thing to go out with a woman and possibly sleep with her, knowing all the while that she would eventually tell her friends about Sam’s various idiosyncrasies — that is to say, this was already bad enough — but to not-sleep with a woman who had access to a Web-based media outlet? That was a terrible idea! And it wouldn’t even raise his Google, because obviously she’d use another name.

From FictionCircus:

One such non-character is Al Gore. Another such non-character is his daughter Lauren. One of the first plot points in the novel involves "Keith Gessen" meeting and desiring Lauren Gore. But Lauren Gore sleeps with his roommate! Our heart goes out to Keith Gessen here: what a sad young literary man! A famous politician’s daughter does not immediately find him more desirable than his roommate despite no effort on his part! Truly the artist at the close of the twentieth century faces nightmares of persecution and Dostoyevskian suffering.

I’m feeling better, but not myself. Still, I have my friends via web cam:

Detroit: Ted Haggard is back in the limelight.  Christians forgive; Jews never forget

Is It OK To Have Affairs If You Need Them For Your Art?

Are writers accountable to a different moral code? As their art is so necessary, their perceptions so keen, perhaps they have to live up to a different Torah?

Fred emails:

I can see the dialog now:

Dear, I have a confession to make.  I cheated on you, but it was necessary for my art.

Oh, OK.  As long as it was just for art’s sake.

I knew you’d understand.

Luke, do you really think that an affair is ever necessary for art?  If so, under what circumstances?

JOE EMAILS: "I know I’d feel a lot happier and creative if I got to have sex with many beautiful women while simultaneously keeping up my one main relationship."

From the New York Times, a review of the first authorized biography of V.S. Naipaul:

The sensual release with Margaret opened up Naipaul’s most creative period, in the 1970s. “And thereafter I thought if that thing hadn’t occurred in my life I probably would have shriveled and died as a writer,” Naipaul told French. “All the later books in a way to some extent depend on her. They stopped being dry.” Compare Naipaul’s two Africa novels — the taut, austere “In a Free State,” published in 1971, and his full-bodied masterpiece “A Bend in the River,” published in 1979 — and it’s impossible to deny that having sex with Margaret (they did little else) was good for his writing. But so was living with Pat — for Naipaul didn’t leave her, nor she him. Instead, he split his life in two — the cerebral and the sexual, “Mama at home, a whore in South America,” in French’s harsh summation — and went back and forth between them with the knowledge, if not exactly the consent, of both.

Pat acceded to the arrangement because she had no idea of any possible life without Naipaul, and because her only sense of pleasure or worth came in his continued dependence on her steadying presence and judgment. Margaret became the new traveling companion (though Naipaul usually sent her away out of pique before the trip was done), while Pat, drugging herself with Quaaludes and Valium, waited at home in Wiltshire to provide literary advice. Rough sex with Margaret would be directly rendered in key passages of “Guerrillas” and “A Bend in the River”; then Pat would listen to the write-up, flinch, leave the room, return, express admiration, make suggestions — without ever daring to “ask herself to what extent Vidia’s writing is drawn from life, and specifically from his life with Margaret.”

I’m curious what the definitive biography says about the superb previous efforts by Paul Theroux and Jeffrey Meyers.
