The Gifts Of Diversity

Harvard sociologist Robert Putnam writes:

In areas of greater diversity, our respondents demonstrate:

* Lower confidence in local government, local leaders and the local news media.17

* Lower political efficacy – that is, confidence in their own influence.18

* Lower frequency of registering to vote, but more interest and knowledge about politics and more participation in protest marches and social reform groups.19

* Less expectation that others will cooperate to solve dilemmas of collective action (e.g., voluntary conservation to ease a water or energy shortage).20

* Less likelihood of working on a community project.21

* Lower likelihood of giving to charity or volunteering.22
• 
Fewer close friends and confidants.23

* Less happiness and lower perceived quality of life.24

* More time spent watching television and more agreement that ‘television is my most important form of entertainment’.25

JONATHAN TILOVE WRITES:

As Gerteis and Mosaic colleagues Douglas Hartmann and Penny Edgell put it in work published this year: “We are at a crucial and unprecedented moment. Across otherwise deep political and social divisions, Americans have come to appreciate diversity and to explicitly promote it.”

In their study, based on a survey in 2003 of more than 2,000 respondents, they found that fewer than 5 percent considered diversity mostly a weakness in American life. Forty-three percent said it was mostly a source of strength, and 50 percent replied that it was equally a source of strength and weakness.

But that doesn’t tell the whole story. The authors noted that in school and at work, Americans are taught to value difference, and they know by now that a positive reaction to diversity is the culturally acceptable answer.

The authors found disagreement and concern about exactly what diversity means.

“Black or white, happy multiculturalist or ambivalent realist, Americans of all stripes see it as a problem if there are simply groups with no national culture to unify them,” they wrote.

Using the same survey to conduct in-depth interviews with respondents in Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles and Minneapolis-St. Paul, Hartmann and a colleague found that people were often tongue-tied when it came to explaining diversity’s value.

They also seemed unable to talk about issues of race and inequality. Here diversity-speak emerges as a kind of “happy talk” in which “racial differences can be simultaneously acknowledged and even celebrated at the very same time that race and its problems are downplayed and disavowed.”

America has a lot at stake in its capacity deal with diversity.

In 1970, the United States was 83 percent non-Hispanic white, 11 percent black, less than 5 percent Hispanic and less than 1 percent Asian. Today, largely as a result of immigration reform in 1965, America is 66 percent non-Hispanic white, 15 percent Hispanic, 13 percent black and a little more than 4 percent Asian.

The younger the population, the less white it is. According to Mark Mather of the Washington-based Population Reference Bureau, in 1980, 26 percent of America’s under-20 population was minority. By 2006, 42 percent of the under-20 population—but only 20 percent of the 60-and-up population—was minority. The gap is only going to widen.

According to an analysis by Mather, those states with the biggest gap in the proportions of the older and younger populations spent the lowest share of their economies on public education. The three most racially homogenous states—Maine, Vermont and West Virginia—had the highest proportional spending on higher education.

Called “the Florida effect,” it is not a new finding. White taxpayers are generally reluctant to support a public sector they view as mostly benefiting people who aren’t white.

In 2002, economists Dora Costa at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Matthew Kahn at Tufts University surveyed 15 recent economics papers on the impact of diversity on social capital and found that all had “the same punch line: heterogeneity reduces civic engagement. In more diverse communities, people participate less as measured by how they allocate their time, their money, their voting and their willingness to take risks to help others.”

STANLEY ROTHMAN WRITES: It is commonly believed that increases in black enrollment will produce positive assessments from students about their educational experience. But in fact the correlations went in the opposite direction. As the proportion of black students rose, student satisfaction with their university experience dropped, as did their assessments of the quality of their education and the work ethic of their peers. In addition, the higher the enrollment diversity, the more likely students were to say that they personally experienced discrimination. The same pattern of negative correlations between educational benefits and increased black enrollment appeared in the responses of faculty and administrators. Both groups perceived decreases in educational quality and academic preparation as the number of black students increased. Faculty members also rated students as less hard-working as diversity increased.

Jews Celebrating Diversity

Jared Taylor writes in his book White Identity: Some people consider autism itself a form of diversity that deserves celebration. Ari Ne’Eman, appointed by President Obama to the National Council on Disability, is a leader in the movement to embrace autism rather than cure it. He calls it a form of “neurodiversity” and considers it an important part of his identity.

Special Forces Lack Diversity

Ron Kampeas reports: That applies especially to swimming, where some blacks fare poorly. SEALs candidates must swim 500 yards in 12 minutes.

“I wouldn’t want to be next to a guy who’s `not sure’ he knows how to swim across a flowing jungle river,” said retired Army Maj. Andy Messing, who is white.

Messing says any difference _ being black, Hispanic, Jewish or even overtly religious _ exacerbates existing tensions in the grinding training regimen for special forces.

Bill Leftwich, who was the top Defense Department diversity official in the Clinton administration, said a military career is tough enough by itself and some blacks don’t want to take on the added burden of dealing with racial attitudes in the special forces.

“Folks ask, `What degree of difficulty do I want to add to my career, do I really want more than there already is now?'” said Leftwich, who is black.

What Can Jews Do To Promote The Safety & Security & Prosperity Of Their People?

I believe the answers to this question would apply equally to other groups, such as blacks, whites, Mexicans, Chinese, Hmong, etc.

* Have children and raise them to be proud of their heritage. Surround them with other people of their heritage. Send them to schools that educate them in their heritage. Discourage unnecessary contact and relationships with outsiders. Discourage inter-marriage.

* Form bonds with other members of your group. Get together frequently. Participate in common rituals. Study texts from your tradition. Eat traditional foods. Frequently contrast the superiority of your group with the inferiority of outsiders. Regard outsiders as unclean.

* Make lots of money and support your people’s causes and schools and institutions. Find jobs for your fellows. Volunteer to help out your own kind. Look after your own kind first. Charity begins at home.

* Think about your ancestors and how they sacrificed themselves for future generations.

* Devote your resources to the education and socialization of the young.

* Say one thing to insiders and one thing to outsiders. Cultivate strategic relationships with outsiders. Be careful who you include in your circle of trust.

* Jared Taylor writes in his book White Identity: “In the United States, race and racial consciousness are experienced in very different ways by different groups. Most non-whites take pride in their race and cultivate racial consciousness. They show solidarity for other members of their race, and do not hesitate to work for explicitly racial ends. Whites do the reverse: They condemn white racial pride and shun anyone who would work for explicitly “white” goals.”

* Whites can learn from Jews and blacks who are often obsessed with their identities.

Black journalist Anthony Jenkins wrote for the Washington Post: “Blackness… is a state of common spiritual idealism that serves to unite the group for the purpose of survival. Putting it another way that’s less of a mouthful, there is not one person of color who can separate himself or herself from the rest of the people of color.”

Another black writes for the Post: “Oh, I attend a mostly black church. I have a black wife. Black kids. And as a journalist, I write mostly about black people. My mama is black. My car is black. I buy black. I vote black. I think black. Still, I can’t help but wonder if I wasn’t once blacker.”

Black law professor Roy Brooks wrote: “African Americans need to spend less time trying to live next to whites and employ more energy striving to live together.”

There’s a great credo for all groups — spend less time trying to socialize with outsiders and more time with each other.

* Jared Taylor writes: “And yet, can readers think of instances in which blacks publicly urged other blacks to set aside racial concerns, to consider themselves Americans first, and to work for the good of all? When have black authority figures expressed regret for even the most horrific anti-white crimes? When have blacks praised diversity if it meant giving up black majorities? How many wealthy blacks make charitable donations to broadly American rather than explicitly black institutions? When has a black person publicly chided other blacks for excessive concern with narrowly black issues? Blacks differ from whites both in what they say and do and they do not say or do.”

Jews would not respond well to Jews who urged them to be Americans first, Jews second. Jews would not respond well to any Jew who urged them to think of humanity first and their own people second. No proud group would. Every successful group thinks of itself first.

Taylor: “Blacks nourish and take pride in an intense, combative racial consciousness. It is only a matter of time before this gives rise to an increasingly explicit white racial consciousness.”

* MECHA’s motto is Por la Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada: “For the race, everything. For those outside the race, nothing.”

Jared Taylor writes: The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), set up in 1968 by break-away LULAC members, was modeled on the NAACP-Legal Defense Fund. It has litigated in support of social benefits for illegal aliens, for affirmative action for Hispanics, and against border control, but it appears to have larger aspirations. One of its first executives was Mario Obledo, who has also served as California secretary of health and welfare. In an interview on radio station KIEV in Los Angeles on June 17, 1998, he warned listeners: “We’re going to take over all the political institutions of California. California is going to be a Hispanic state and anyone who doesn’t like it should leave. If they [whites] don’t like Mexicans, they ought to go back to Europe.” That same year, President Bill Clinton awarded Mr. Obledo the Medal of Freedom…

Professor José Angel Gutierrez of the University of Texas explained his views to a Hispanic audience in 1995: “We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. It’s a matter of time. The explosion is in our population. You must believe that you are entitled to govern … Se estan cagando cabrones de miedo! (They [whites] are sh****** in their pants with fear.) I love it!”

* Jared Taylor writes in his book White Identity: America Libre (Free America), a novel by Raul Ramos y Sanchez, is set in a future in which heroic Hispanics slaughter repulsive whites wholesale on their way to creating an independent all-Hispanic nation in the American West. America Libre won the 2009 International Latino Book Award and was promoted in Latina magazine.”

* We can admire the example of Asians. “Asians are also the least likely of any racial or ethnic group to commit crimes. In every category, whether violent crime, white-collar crime, alcohol, or sex offenses, they are arrested at about one-quarter to one-third the rate of whites, who are the next most law-abiding group.” (Taylor)

White Identity: Racial Consciousness in the 21st Century

Jared Taylor writes on page eight of his book White Identity: In 2000, Crescent Heights Elementary School was beefed up with special programs in the hope of attracting whites who lived nearby, but in 2006, there were only three white students out of 350. “White parents would come and see all these African American children and say, ‘I don’t want my child to be the only white child in the school,” explained Sharon Curry, wh helped develop the enriched programs.

“The more education white parents had, the more likely they were to rule out schools for their children simply because of the number of blacks.”

In 1960, Los Angeles was 72% white, in 1970 it was 59%, and by 2000 it was only 33% white.

To preserve its heritage, Montreal’s Kahnawake Reserve in 1981 banned all non-Indians. Couples in mixed marriages could break up or leave.

In 2007, the Cherokee tribe voted to expel its 2,800 black members.

* “The incidence of spousal homicide is 7.7 times higher in interracial marriages compared to intraracial marriages.”

“White men who married black women were 21.4 times more likely to be killed by their spouses than white men who married white women. A white woman increased her risk of being killed 12.4 times by marrying a black man.”

* “Bone marrow donations almost never work unless donor and recipient are the same race, so non-white patients suffer because almost all the people who register as donors are white.”

* A strong immigrant identity keeps kids out of trouble. (Pg. 104)

What Are The Priorities For Blacks?

Myron Pauli writes: Between the killing of Travon Martin and the exoneration of George Zimmerman, roughly 6,000 black Americans were killed by black Americans – not much protest. In that same interval, 400,000 black babies were aborted – presumably not all suffering from Down’s syndrome, Siamese twins, or major medical abnormalities – but not much protest. In Africa, we have the Lord’s Resistance Army of Uganda, Boko Haram in Nigeria, Diamond Gangs in Sierra Leone, and other examples of mass rape, mass mutilations, and genocide. Remember Rwanda? Does anyone care about 5,400,000 killed in Civil War in the Congo?

…Would anyone have cared if Travon Martin or Michael Bell were killed by a black drug dealer or a rival boyfriend? However, if the shooter is white, then it is time to take to the streets regardless of whether the facts have been established. Time for Al Sharpton to get on his horse like Paul Revere to shout “the whiteys are coming!”. Death is not required – even beating Rodney King or an auto accident that kills Gavin Cato in Crown Heights is enough to get the riots going and the subsequent looting of plasma TV’s from Costco. As Fred [Reed] puts it, beneath the surface is a cauldron of hatred – as in the Crown Heights riots.

Did White Flight Destroy Ferguson?

Steve Sailer writes:

In the St. Louis metro area, a black was elected mayor of East St. Louis way back in 1971. Unfortunately, the population of East St. Louis has dropped from 70,000 in 1970 to 27,000 in 2010 as blacks flee a black run city.

That appears to be a general pattern, with Detroit as the most striking example: blacks follow white leadership around and, in the long run, flee black leadership.

In general, blacks follow around conservative white leadership (e.g., blacks have been net moving to the Republican-run Southern states), and flee liberal white leadership (e.g., San Francisco).

Comments: “leaving behind destitute neighborhoods with no investment or opportunity.” – They want both self determination, and to live in a society built and governed by others, these two goals are mutually contradictory.

Yeah the income gap between Whites and Blacks in Ferguson is smaller because the Whites in Ferguson are just as broke as the Black underclass there.

There are no financially well off Whites living in Ferguson. White people who make good money, tend to not want to live around large swaths of Blacks.

Do you think Steve Sailer would ever live in a zip code that is 67 percent Black ? No way, he makes a decent enough living to be able to afford to live in a Whitopia.

Whites in Ferguson be poor yo, that is why they have not White flighted out of there. They have no rainy day funds.

If segregation is necessarily bad and diversity intrinsically good, why don’t white neighborhoods ever seem to suffer from segregation? why is it only NAMs that suffer from being forced to live amongst only their own kind? Doesn’t this fact imply that NAMs are worse neighbors and need diversity just to live in a decent community where their numbers are watered down?

The official “Narrative” always starts at “White Flight’, but reality starts with “Black Flight”. Blacks flee Black neighborhoods and move to White neighborhoods. Whites then flee. Both flee for the same reason, they don’t want to live in a Black neighborhood.

Ferguson is probably on it’s way to becoming mostly black. Riots, arson, looting and tribal violence will have that effect. It’s been the same thing all over the country for the past fifty years. Entire neighborhoods in Chicago went from mostly white to all black in short periods of time due to black terrorism driving people out. They acquired white’s homes at a fraction of their value as a result. What it really should be called is black terrorism. Any attempt to stand up to it that results in one of the terrorists getting hurt, such as happened to the swaggering thug, is met with outbursts of yet more violence. They’ve managed to get their way all these years by the use of terrorism and threats of it, inducing the rest of society to keep spending more and more money for things like closing gaps, public schools with metal detectors, pre-preschool, midnight basketball and on and on. It’s all money down the rathole. Meanwhile, keep paying barbarian tribute. Or else.

In Baltimore you have the added entertainment of a large Jewish community. For reasons no one has explained, the Jews love the blacks. The Jews move in and begin importing blacks from Baltimore into subsidized housing. The Gentiles flee and you end up with a weird fusion of 1920′s Warsaw and modern day Lagos. The Jewish business then sell-out to the Koreans who don’t mind running cash businesses in the ghetto.

High-achieving blacks follow conservative white leadership to escape the dysfunction of their co-ethnics. Yet, their friends and extended families join them, with regression to the mean setting in. If left unchecked, a tipping point (heh) is reached and things go Zimbabwe.

Thomas Sowell: When a black man declared his “rage,” Eric Hoffer shot back: “Mister, it is easy to be full of rage. It is not easy to go to work and build something.”

Hoffer was convinced that the black leadership was taking the wrong approach, if they wanted to advance the people in whose name they spoke. Only achievement would win the respect of the larger society and — more important — their own self-respect. And no one else can give you achievement.

Baseball vs Cricket

This book came out in 2003 — ‘Playing Hardball – A Kent County Cricketer’s Journey into Big League Baseball’. It seems like a good way to learn about the cultural differences between America and the British Commonwealth.

On baseball runs and soccer goals

Soccer goals probably constitute the highest valued currency in the world of sport, but baseball runs are not far behind.

Pitcher Vs the Cricket Batsman

The equivalent of the cricket batsman, then, is not the hitter but the pitcher. He lives in fear of conceding a run, of blotting his copybook, letting the side down.

Role of the coach

That is one of the differences between baseball and cricket, and more generally between American sports and what might loosely be called Commonwealth sports. In America, the flow of coaching advice never stops. In baseball, particularly, if the advice is tactical, the players have little choice in the matter; they do what they are told. A batter might be told not to swing at any pitch, in the hope of earning ‘a walk’ – so even if his dream pitch is coming towards him, he must control his instinct to hit it. For those of us brought up on the romantic ideal of sporting spontaneity, that seems a little restrictive.

On Technique

…if you ask any normal, untutored person to take a swing at a ball, the result will almost certainly look more like baseball or golf than cricket.
Technique, in cricket as in anything, is partly about training an unnatural instinct to feel natural. But much as I hate to admit it to Americans, the raw full-blooded violence of the baseball swing is much closer to primal human nature than the refinement of the cover drive. Bigger, brasher, bolder – it’s American. It is their Marlon Brando to our Cary Grant.

Getting hit

A baseball batter might get hit if he’s unlucky; a cricketer almost certainly will get hit if he hangs around long enough. It’s a rare macho advantage I always enjoy pointing out to Americans. Yeah, they bowl at your head all the time. All part of the game. You just get on with it…

Dual Allegiance

Pitching is like serving to stay in the match, every game, every day. Yes, the odds are in your favour. But the pressure is on your back. So, as a cricket batsman, my sympathies are divided at baseball games. In terms of skills, I feel much closer to the hitter. In terms of mental state, I feel much more affinity with the pitcher. It’s a dual allegiance I very much enjoy.

Stats in American sport

‘I’d love to be a coach of an American sport,’ one professional cricket coach once told me. ‘They don’t mess around.’ He is right. In baseball almost no statistic is inconceivable, nor any selection made without full reference to all the available evidence. The availability of critical evidence has a flip side for coaches : they haven’t got much chance of bluffing their players or the media. Bullshitters don’t last long.

Alltime greats

In cricket, we argue about who were the truly great players. In baseball, they vote on it – and the winners go to the Hall of Fame. It’s that black and white.

What Do They Want In Ferguson?

Robert Weisberg writes: African Americans in Ferguson, MO are demanding justice over the shooting of Michael Brown. But, a clear-eyed observer might conclude differently: what they really want is vengeance, a public lynching, hauling out Officer Darren Wilson in chains, watching as he pleads for mercy, then asking the crowd to shout out its judgment and guilty verdict announced, dispatching him as gruesomely as possible while the crowd roars its approval. This is hardly a new idea — recall the festive public guillotining during the French Reign of Terror or mob chants of “to the Wall” in Castro’s Cuba. And, truth be told, I suspect that many non-protestors might be willing to sacrifice Officer Wilson to end the violence.

But, let’s assume that cooler heads prevail and American style justice — not vengeance — does triumph. Would this satisfy the Ferguson demonstrators?

The Prostitute In Medieval Jewish History

Dan Rabinowitz writes: Finally, we turn to R. Yechezkel Landau, author of Shu”t Noda B’Yehuda, and although he is not discussing prostitution in general, but it is worthwhile to mention a specific case of Havah Bernstein, wife of the Chief Rabbi of Brody, R. Areyeh Leib Bernstein. According to the testimony of two people (and perhaps others), Havah was accused of acting as a prostitute. After this testimony came to light there was a celebrated controversy regarding the status of this woman vis-a-vis her husband. It appears, due to the Chief Rabbi’s powerful secular connections he was able to shut down any discussion about his wife (although there are several responsa on the topic). And specifically, there was a decree that anyone who called the Chief Rabbi’s wife a prostitute would be subject to a fine of 100 adumim for each statement to that effect. So, R. Landau showed up to court and made the following announcement:
“Everyone should know that the wife of the Chief Rabbi is a prostitute and there is a fine, 100 adumim for each utterace that she is a prostitute, and you should also all know that if I had more money I would call her a prostitute again, however I currently do not have the money I will have to satisfy myself with the fact that I have already called her a prostitute.”
Thus, R. Landau was able to call her a prostitute four times for the price of one. (Mofes Ha-Dor p. 9).
