NYDN: No country for Jews? An Israeli sadly concludes that ordinary Palestinians are fighting a long war against Israel itself

Chaim Amalek writes: “If only Israel had an Angela Merkel or a Trudeau willing to take the courageous step of opening its borders to the world’s migrant population, the Jews of that land would be so much better off.”

Rabbi Daniel Gordis writes:

“It’s our land,” she responded rather matter-of-factly. Stunned, they weren’t sure that they’d heard her correctly. So they waited. But that was all she had to say. “It’s our land. You’re just here for now.”

What upset those students more than anything was not that a Palestinian might believe that the Jews are simply the latest wave of Crusaders in this region, and that we, like the Crusaders of old, will one day be forced out. We all know that there are many Palestinians who believe that.

What upset them was that she — an educated woman, getting a graduate degree (which would never happen in a Muslim country) at a world class university (only Israel has those — none of Israel’s neighbors has a single highly rated university) and working at a college filled with Jews who admire her, like her and treat her as they would any other colleague — still believes that when it’s all over, the situation will get resolved by our being tossed out of here once again.

Even she , who lives a life filled with opportunities that she would never have in an Arab country, still thinks at the end of the day the Jews are nothing but colonialists. And colonialists, she believes, don’t last here. The British got rid of the Ottomans, the Jews got rid of the British — and one day, she believes, the Arabs will get rid of the Jews.

That is one of the many reasons that this recent wave of violence, consisting mostly of deadly stabbings carried out by Israeli Arabs (not Palestinians living over the Green Line) and Arab residents of east Jerusalem, has Israelis so unsettled.

Yes, the reality on the ground is frightening. People are being stabbed on the street, on buses, in malls. Those being attacked are elderly men and women and young boys on their bicycles. No one is immune, and unlike the last Intifada, when suicide bombers sought high casualty counts so you felt safe away from crowds, now nowhere feels definitely safe.

But even that is not the most debilitating dimension of this new round of attacks on Jews. What’s most sobering is the fact that this new round of violence has made it clear, once again, that this conflict is simply never going to end.

I take it for granted that no group wants to be ruled by outsiders in land it regards as its own. Blacks in Africa don’t want to be ruled by whites. Arabs don’t want to be ruled by Jews. Whites in America don’t like having a black president.

A Jewish friend says: Hindsight is always better, but even Moshe Dayan recommended after the six day war treading lightly in the West Bank. Palestinian Arabs (both Christian and Muslim) Armenians, Druze and even more minorities than you ever heard of, really had no problem with Israel defeating the Jordanians. They had existed for hundreds of years under the power of others, from the Ottoman Turks (for most of that time) to the British under the mandate, and then under Jordan. If the Israelis had given them more self governing authority, and allowed return to the west bank of Palestinians in other parts of Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, it might have been different.

Israeli Arabs are a different matter. They realize that they will always be a minority in Israel and Gordis paraphrases part of what Meir Kahane said. Israelis point to the fact that they put in modern plumbing and the Arabs should be grateful to live under such benign government. Kahane says that such an attitude by the Jews shows contempt for Arabs who do have pride. Would Jews trade their sovereignty over Israel for a higher standard of living? Gordis talks about that the opportunities this woman has would be restricted in any other Arab controlled country (questionable whether this is in fact true, women in Lebanon, Egypt and even Iraq were not subject to sharia law and often became professionals) yet is surprised that she views the Israelis as temporary colonials.

I do not doubt for a second that many Israeli Arabs appreciate that Israel is mostly a western liberal democratic society plunked down in a region where most people are ruled by autocrats or monarchies. Just because they don’t like Israeli Jews doesn’t mean they want to go back to some sort of medieval kingdom like Saudi Arabia, it means that they don’t like being a (mostly) despised minority in their own native land. The reality as we now know despite decades of Israeli propaganda is that, unless you are a religious person who truly believes God gave Israel to the Jews, the Jews have taken Israel under cover of legality (the Balfour declaration, the U. N. Resolution of 1947) but have been brutally pragmatic in doing so, including expelling Arabs from ancestral homelands, engaging in war crimes and terrorism and in part by playing on guilt over the holocaust.

As the secular Israelis get less influential within Israel, the Arabs see there is not really a future for them there. They see that they are used as demagogic talking points by Netanyahu to get increased voting by Jews in the national elections. They see no prospect in the immediate future for any neighboring state to successfully stage a military attack on Israel, and see that any attempt by Hamas or Hezbollah to disturb the security of the Jewish state results in collective punishment and significant damage to the Palestinians living in Gaza, Lebanon and even the west bank.

Non-violent ways of forcing Israeli citizens to face up the long term effect on the subordinate Arab populations through non-violent protests and the BDS movement are marginalized and seem to be of no consequence.

The Arabs living in Israel who chafe under Israeli rule, understand that the legitimacy of the state lies in providing security for its Jewish citizens. This latest stabbing outbreak is a direct attempt to bring home to Israelis that the state cannot protect them. Although the Arabs who take direct action are a tiny minority, Gordis’s article shows that even the most educated and integrated Arabs are alienated from a Jewish controlled state. The understandable Israeli reaction to the stabbings and car attacks only serves to drive a further wedge between the Jews and Arabs. Gordis suggests there is nothing that can be done to assuage the Arabs so they won’t lash out at the Jews, but this fits the Meir Kahane paradigm that Arabs are a hostile tribe and unless they are willing to accede to being guests in Jewish Israel, they should be “transferred.”

There might be another way, but it will be opposed by both the Israeli hard liners and religious parties and by the PLO and Hamas and by Islamist groups, and that is taking baby steps to give the Palestinians a meaningful say in what happens on a mundane day to day basis. The Israelis will say that the Palestinians are participants in the electorate, some of them serve in Knesset, some in the Army, some on the courts, but if they were given some sort of veto power over internal Israeli decisions which have no impact on security, say the building of hospitals, setting up enterprise zones, building utility infrastructure, building schools, and they proved to be “responsible” that might be a building block since once they have a stake in the nation, they might have a different attitude towards it.

Analyzing Neo-Con Washington Post Blogger Jennifer Rubin

The gatekeeper Jennifer Rubin is at it again. “Does Biden hurt Jeb Bush, who could be the only “dynasty” candidate? Frankly, Biden has been there so long he’s effectively an institution all by himself inside the Beltway. Compared with him, Bush is actually a fresh face (who, we sometimes forget, never served in Washington).”

Who cares what Jennifer Rubin says these days? Perhaps she had more fans when she was at Commentary?

Wait! Jennifer is totally right that 9/11 was proof of how Bush made us safe.

Rubin: “Jeb Bush’s big chance to knock out Donald Trump.”

Oh, sure. If he just listens to Rubin, he’s going to climb back to victory!

@JRubinBlogger is fully lucid and not at all spewing Neo-Con talking points.

I’m sure @JRubinBlogger’s loyalty to Neocon narrative has nothing to do with @washingtonpost tolerating her rejection of facts.

You have to give @JRubinBlogger credit for not widening scope of content since leaving Commentary. ‪#‎gatekeeper‬

I don’t want to say, “too Jewish,” but you could read @JRubinBlogger’s op-eds at a Young Israel shalosh sheudas. @OU_News

Perhaps Jennifer Rubin is right. Who is more of the peoples’ Republican than the beloved Eric Cantor? Why isn’t he running for president? “They cannot relate to a party in which John Boehner or Eric Cantor, for goodness sake, are supposed to be the enemy.”

The @washingtonpost has both types of conservatives — neocons and cuckservatives.

Good thing the @washingtonpost has both @JRubinBlogger AND Krauthammer. ‪#‎diversity‬

@JRubinBlogger & @krauthammer disagree on lots of things. Like what exactly Obama should do to Iran for Israel’s sake.

A friend says:

The fall of the white race is happening much much faster than even a pessimist like me thought would be the case.

Blame the “conservatives” with their idiotic free market obsessions.

Ain’t nothing free about keeping migrants out, but the Republican Party leadership cares more about maximizing CEO compensation, corporate profits than it does about America. And the moneymen behind the GOP won’t have it any other way.

So either Trump somehow manages to win, or the nation is SOL.

I have been thinking about where in America a man can retire on social security and nothing else. Alas, maybe South Dakota, away from the oil patch?

* Mark-Viverito is right. We need to move away from our white privilege concept of “equal time” on networks and ban those people who minority activists find disagreeable.

Steve Sailer: Video of George W. Bush Calling for Laxer Scrutiny of Arabs 11 Months Before 9/11

Steve Sailer writes:

With Jeb Bush and Donald Trump arguing over whether George W. Bush failed to stop 9/11, it’s worth going to the videotape (47:28) of the second Presidential debate of 2000. On 10/11/2000, the Texas governor denounced heightened scrutiny of Arab airline passengers by airport security. Bush said on national TV:

Secondly, there is other forms of racial profiling that goes on in America. Arab-Americans are racially profiled in what is called secret evidence. People are stopped, and we have to do something about that. My friend, Senator Spencer Abraham of Michigan, is pushing a law to make sure that Arab-Americans are treated with respect. So racial profiling isn’t just an issue at local police forces. It’s an issue throughout our society. And as we become a diverse society, we’re going to have to deal with it more and more. I believe, though — I believe, as sure as I’m sitting here, that most Americans really care. They’re tolerant people. They’re good, tolerant people. It’s the very few that create most of the crises, and we just have to find them and deal with them.

Note that when the future President said “we just have to find them and deal with them,” the “them” he was referring to as having to be dealt with were not Arab skyjackers but airline and airport employees worried about stopping Arab skyjackers.

In accordance with this statement, Bush appointed Democrat Norman Mineta Secretary of Transportation and directed him to root out profiling of Arabs at the airport.

In 2005, airport counter clerk Michael Tuohey told Oprah Winfrey of his encounter early on 9/11/2001 with the leader of the terrorists:

“I got an instant chill when I looked at [Atta]. I got this grip in my stomach and then, of course, I gave myself a political correct slap…I thought, ‘My God, Michael, these are just a couple of Arab businessmen.’”

By the way, on a personal note, this may have been when I started to realize I was the world’s least viral journalist. I’m not sure if the word “viral” had that meaning on 9/11/2001, but if it did, I was sure that the President’s 11-month-old denunciation of anti-terrorism efforts would soon go viral. I vividly recalled watching Bush say this to a huge television audience less than a year before. Back then you couldn’t post video, but it was easy to find a transcript. So I stayed up late that night writing up “Bush had called for laxer airport security” so I wouldn’t get scooped too badly by all the other pundits.

In all the rush, it didn’t get published for about a week. Yet by then, nobody else had brought it up. When my piece didn’t get any attention, well, lots of stuff was happening.

Every few years since then, I’ve brought up Bush’s statement, but it never seems to register on anybody other than my core readers. It’s an interesting example of the Sapir-Whorf effect in action. We are given categories to file facts away in: e.g., Republicans Are Racist; Bush Protected Us from Terrorism, etc. It’s very hard to remember anything that doesn’t fit in the right slots.

COMMENTS TO STEVE SAILER:

* After 9/11 the government kept up its race-blind policy; it just changed directions. So instead of treating no one like a potential terrorist they treat everyone like a potential terrorist. As a very non-Arab, non-Muslim American of overwhelmingly European descent, I dread returning to the US due to the double digit IQ, completely unaccountable bullies that pass for border agents.

* So…a Bush calls for less security on a certain group and that group takes advantage. Sounds like actionable intelligence to not let a Bush into public life.

* This is what passed for ‘conservative’ in our political culture. Bush the wrecker destroyed everything he touched. There’s also this conflating of Arab-American with just any Arab passing through. The former might be just an ordinary citizen going through customs but Atta was not a citizen and certainly no American. There’s a difference.

* Bush made his speech at least five years after the first World Trade Center bombing by Mad Mullah Omar of New Jersey and his crew.

Bush made his harangue when jihadis were already convening airport conventions across the USA (as Steve Emerson reported).

Bush made his warm-n-cuddly speech five years after Emerson released his award-winning documentary, “Terrorists Among Us: Jihad in America”.

* Excerpts from an article written by Andrew Kaczynski, published by Buzzfeed.

In 2000, 19 months before Sept. 11, 2001, Donald Trump wrote extensively of the terrorism threat the United States was facing.

Trump, who at the time was considering a presidential bid on the Reform Party ticket, went so far as to say that an attack on a major U.S. city was not just a probability, but an inevitability.

“I really am convinced we’re in danger of the sort of terrorist attacks that will make the bombing of the Trade Center look like kids playing with firecrackers,” wrote Trump in his 2000 book, The America We Deserve. “No sensible analyst rejects this possibility, and plenty of them, like me, are not wondering if but when it will happen.”

Trump even mentions Osama bin Laden by name, in a criticism of an American foreign policy that too quickly jumps from one crisis to the next.

“One day we’re told that a shadowy figure with no fixed address named Osama bin-Laden is public enemy number one, and U.S. jetfighters lay waste to his camp in Afghanistan,” The Donald wrote. “He escapes back under some rock, and a few news cycles later it’s on to a new enemy and new crisis.”

….

“We can kid ourselves all we want by mocking their references to the Great Satan, but also keep in mind that there is no greater destiny for many people than to deal the Great Satan a major kick in the teeth,” he wrote, adding they despised the U.S. support for Israel.

“Our teenage boys fantasize about Cindy Crawford; young terrorists fantasize about turning an American city (and themselves) into charcoal,” Trump wrote.

Trump predicted a major attack on an American city that would involved weapons of mass destruction, writing, “Yet it’s time to get down to the hard business of preparing for what I believe is the real possibility that somewhere, sometime, a weapon of mass destruction will be carried into a major American city and detonated.”

* George Bush was on an ego trip from getting a large percentage of Hispanic votes whenever he ran for governor of Texas. A high number for a Republican at least. GW and Karl Rove wanted to extend this by having an illegal alien amnesty. They were working for this when 911 happened and ruined their open borders plans.
The Vdare website was around back then and cautioned us on George Bush’s immigration stance before he was elected and after. To repeat. It was only the 911 attack that stopped these schemes. I blame Karl Rove as much as George Bush. Rove had a real grip on Bush’s mind.
Rove is ultra sneaky and nefarious.

* It didn’t go viral because everyone agrees that profiling based on race is wicked. 3000 Americans may have died but if our [or ‘your’ since I’m not American] commitment to race-blindness was weakened that would have been a greater tragedy.

* I guess we’ll find out in a few days whether Trump or anyone in his entourage reads your blog.

* This is the kind of stuff that would make the average GOPer’s head explode. Their ill-thought political loyalty forces them to either ignore his policies or mildly defend Dubya. That it took a Trump to do this speaks volumes about the GOP masses. The Tea Party never went there There might have been a few isolated examples, but the Tea Party as a movement never castigated Bush directly or consistently.

Aside from Trump, who for reasons not readily apparent is changing history on his own, I’ve no real hope that the GOP brigades of the so-called Greatest Generation, Silents or Boomers will ever do the right thing. They’ve had generations to do SOMETHING. They’ve had their prophets, but like the rich man’s brothers they continue in their sinning [against their grandchildren].

At some point blaming political elites, NAMs or political operatives no longer works to excuse the populace’s acquiescence to or complicity in the current sad state of the country. When Dalton made his speech or whenever anything like that happens, why wasn’t there an immediate petition to have the man recalled? Why no public marches or protests? Same for Reagan’s Amnesty? Where were the marches?

There is a powerful lobby for red herrings like GUNS and the “pro-life” movement, people can and do mobilize.

* Viralization does not correlate well with either relevance, cleverness, quality, or import. It also does not just happen automatically. In order for something to go viral, it has to be repeatedly tweeted, facebooked, “dug,” redditized, instagrammed, or otherwise continuously recycled through the various social media. I don’t participate in that sort of thing, and I suspect most iSteve readers do not, either.

* I pointed out a few days ago that Bush’s National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice received a warning more than a month before 9/11 from the CIA (personally from George Tenet, as I recall) of impending terrorist attacks “possibly involving airplanes.” That brainless, incompetent woman dismissed the warnings as “vague” because they didn’t give her specific flight numbers.

BTW the 9/11 Commission Report, overseen by Philip Zelikow, states (at p. 359 of my version) that “In the summer of 2001, DCI Tenet, the Counterterrorist Center, and the Counterrorism Security Group did their utmost to sound a loud alarm, its basis being intelligence indicating that al Qaeda planned something big.” Curiously omitted from the Commission Report was the specific reference to Rice from Tenet and the warning “possibly involving airplanes.”

Years later, we got this report from NBC News:

“On the 11th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil, there is mounting evidence that the Bush administration received more intelligence warnings than previously known prior to the Sept. 11 attacks that killed nearly 3,000.

Kurt Eichenwald, a former New York Times reporter, wrote in an op-ed piece in Tuesday’s newspaper about a number of previously unknown warnings relayed to the White House by U.S. intelligence in the weeks and months prior to the attacks. Eichenwald wrote of the warnings in his new book, “500 Days: Secrets and Lies in the Terror Wars.”

And former US intelligence officials say there were even more warnings, pointing to a little noticed section of George Tenet’s memoir, “At the Center of the Storm.”

In it, Tenet describes a July 10, 2001, meeting at the White House in the office of Condoleezza Rice, then President George W. Bush’s national security adviser. The meeting was not discussed in the 9-11 Commission’s final report on the attacks, although Tenet wrote that he provided information on it to the commission. . .

Tenet wrote about how after being briefed by his counterterrorism team on July 10 — two months prior to the attacks — “I picked up the big white secure phone on the left side of my desk — the one with a direct line to Condi Rice — and told her that I needed to see her immediately to provide an update on the al-Qaida threat.”

Tenet said he could not recall another time in his seven years as director of the CIA that he sought such an urgent meeting at the White House. Rice agreed to the meeting immediately, and 15 minutes later, he was in Rice’s office.

An analyst handed out the briefing packages Tenet had just seen and began to speak. “His opening line got everyone’s attention,” Tenet wrote, “in part because it left no room for misunderstanding: ‘There will be a significant terrorist attack in the coming weeks or months!’””

Link.

From a 2004 blog by Fred Kaplan in Slate that was recently reposted on another blog:
“Throughout that summer, we now well know, Tenet, Richard Clarke, and several other officials were running around with their “hair on fire,” warning that al-Qaida was about to unleash a monumental attack. On Aug. 6, Bush was given the now-famous President’s Daily Brief (by one of Tenet’s underlings), warning that this attack might take place “inside the United States.” For the previous few years—as Philip Zelikow, the commission’s staff director, revealed this morning—the CIA had issued several warnings that terrorists might fly commercial airplanes into buildings or cities.”

* Trump could put together a devastating Instagram GIF using this video. It might go viral yet.

* The specific screw-ups of W are mostly history, but the forces that determine which facts are remembered and shared (and which go down the memory hole) remain relevant today.

I think a lot of what drives this is cognitive dissonance (contradictory thoughts are unpleasant to hold in your head) and confirmation bias (things that agree with your starting ideas are easier to remember and recall than things that contradict them).

Once there is a widely accepted public image of some politician, it’s common for facts that contradict that image to bounce off the politician, while facts that re-enforce the image stick to him. A good example of this is McCain’s maverick image, which survived being a consummate insider who voted with his party nearly all the time, as well as his role in the Keating Five scandal.

I suspect that understanding how this works is pretty useful for understanding the (vast) distance between reality and common public understanding of issues.

WP: Christians can’t ignore the suffering of Muslims

Michael Gerson writes in the Washington Post:

…American Christianity, has its own self-examination to conduct. The largest humanitarian disaster of our time — involving 4 million Syrian refugees and 7.6 million internally displaced — has mainly befallen Muslims. The response? Charitable giving by Americans to international causes has gone down for two consecutive years. Some Republican presidential candidates seem indifferent to the plight of refugees, and even some evangelical leaders have joined them.

To respond to the AIDS crisis, American Christians had to overcome a belief that the disease was deserved. To respond to the Syrian refugee crisis, Christians must overcome their discomfort with Islam and their belief that conflict among Muslims is none of their concern.

Is the Christian faith merely a cover for tribalism? Or will it demonstrate its essence in service to the refugees of another faith who did nothing to deserve their fate?

Muslims never seem to have had much trouble ignoring Christian suffering. Why should Christians help people who want to destroy them?

Comments at the WP:

* Europe is being torn apart by an influx of Muslims who cannot and will not integrate into Western culture. I’m no fan of Christianity and Judaism with their Iron Age war god and culture of ignorance, but Islam is one step worse and I don’t want to be around those who believe this claptrap and try to impose it on others.

* If they perhaps could stop video taping the beheading of their enemy or refrain from putting a man in a cage and burning him alive. I mean geeze, the optics are terrible.

* The history of the “religion of peace” is hardly that.
Feuds, mass slaughters, “honor” killings, NO economic or intellectual progress
(yeah I know, algebra for the PC apologists) and general waste of oxygen.
Then 3,000 innocent people dead on 9/11.
Let them all go to meet allah and their 72 virgins.
I wouldn’t waste a dime on this miserable blight on humanity.
A “moderate” muslim is like a “centrist” Democrat or a government “worker.”

* Michael Gerson is profoundly ignorant in any subject as he has no high school education.
Why Muslims Come to the West
Islam is incompatible with Western culture, history, judicial system and civilization. Remember, our judicial system based on Judeo-Christian values. Islam objects to these values and the Koran calls for the extermination of Christians and Jews. The Muslims’ objective is the creation of a global Caliphate and the establishment of Shariah law. All this eventually leads to civil war, unless we will take care and deport all Muslims from US and Europe. Look what is going on in Britain, France and other countries where Muslims clearly declare that their primary objective to overcome current social systems and replace it with Sharia law. Read below the confessions of leading Muslims around the world, including in America and watch the Fitna on:

Omar Ahmad, co-founder of the Council of American-Islamic Relations:
“Those who stay in America should be open to society without melting, keeping Mosques open so anyone can come and learn about Islam. If you choose to live here, you have a responsibility to deliver the message of Islam … Islam isn’t in America to be equal to any other faiths, but to become dominant. The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth.”
Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan makes clear Islam’s aggressive role in subordinating other worldly religions to it, claiming,
“The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the believers our army.”
Algerian leader Houari Boumédienne said at the United Nations in 1974:
“One day, millions of men will leave the Southern Hemisphere to go to the Northern Hemisphere. And they will not go there as friends. Because they will go there to conquer it. And they will conquer it with their sons. The wombs of our women will give us victory.”
Dr. Ja`far Sheikh Idris in article “Separation Of Church And State”
http://www.islaam.com/Article.aspx?id=559 said:
“Secularism cannot be a solution for countries with a Muslim majority or even a sizeable minority, for it requires people to replace their God-given beliefs with an entirely different set of man-made beliefs. Separation of religion and state is not an option for Muslims because is requires us to abandon Allah’s decree for that of a man.”

Al-Jazeera’s Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi, who is widely hailed as a moderate reformer in the West, said:
“Islam will return to Europe as a conqueror and victor,” and “the conquest this time will not be by the sword but by preaching and ideology.”
A Saudi Sheikh, Muhammad bin Abd Al-Rahman Al-‘Arifi, imam of the mosque of King Fahd Defense Academy, said:
Muslims “will control the land of the Vatican; we will control Rome and introduce Islam in it….”
Also read the article “Arab-American author outlines secret 20-year strategy to undermine country” by FROM JOSEPH FARAH’S G2 BULLETIN; and the documentary book “Muslim Mafia” that exposes secret documents and plans for overturn US laws and government to sharia state.
Plus, remember, all Muslim organizations have close ties to global terrorist organizations, like Hamas, Hezbullah, Brotherhood.
Only the total deportation of Muslims will save western countries and civilization from collapse.

* Muslims need to stay in their own countries and fight for a civil society. What good does running away do? Muslims who immigrate to other countries rarely adapt their host countries culture; they create enclaves of sharia law and Islamic culture in their new homes. This has not worked out well for Western Europe but Western Europe’s dedication to multi culturalism, moral relativity and political correctness cloud their decisions and may doom their societies in the long run.

* What is it with liberal journalists and soft mindedness anyway?

Helping mass numbers of Muslims gain entry into a Western country is a prescription for slow motion suicide. Islamic values are counter to western values. That’s obvious except people are afraid to state the obvious because it’s not PC.

* So tired of the apology tours and sheer avoidance of the facts – yes, there are over 1 Billion Muslims world wide; yes, some of them are peaceful; but NO, it is not a religion of peace when every day there are beheadings, gays killed for just being alive, women stoned to death, incessant chanting of death to America and death to Israel, state pledges of the destruction of Israel, women and children targeted for murder to control a population…YES, we have every reason to fear Islam…it is not peaceful in its daily, worldwide war on everything that is not Muslim.

* IF WE COULD JUST FIGURE OUT WHO’S CAUSING THE PROBLEM

The Shoe Bomber was a Muslim

* Muslims tend to cut Christians’ heads off so why should we “bend over” (pardon the pun) to help them do it?

WP: When Latino sluggers flip their bats, it’s called disrespectful. It’s also a double standard.

Chris Lamb writes in the Washington Post: “The brouhaha over José Bautista’s ALDS bat flip exposed the cultural and ethnic tensions beneath the surface in professional baseball.”

Comments at WP:

* It is quite a leap to generalize the response of one professional athlete to the self indulgent, impulsive behavior of an opposing, highly compensated, professional athlete into some kind of conspiracy of cultural oppression. In fact, the overwhelming majority of the overwhelmingly Caucasian individuals in attendance last week in Toronto had a favorable view of Bautista’s behavior. The nice thing about baseball that you seem to not understand is that it is the color of the shirt the players wear that matters, not the color of the skin underneath the shirt.

* What a BS article. Using the Braves/Marlins games was a perfect example of trying to compare apples to oranges to make your pre-ordained point. Gattis did not stare the ball down as it went over the wall. And you can tell he did nothing wrong, because _nobody_ on the Marlins even looks at him sideways as he rounds the bases. On the other hand, Jose Fernandez behaves like an absolute punk. He flips his bat(!) then he stares at the ball as it sails over the wall, only then does he start running. Then he SPITS towards the inside of the baseline as he rounds third. With dishonesty like this, is it any wonder journalists are considered about as trustworthy as politicians by the general public. Another ‘racists everywhere’ journalist. What a surprise.

* It’s disrespectful no matter what the race or ethnicity. But, while on the subject, let me ask why every sport, cultural, or societal aspect of life has to be degraded to the lowest common denominator? From language to dress to conduct, we are asked to be not just inclusive of lowered standards, but to celebrate the coarsening of American life.

From Steve Sailer August 8, 2005:

“Brain dead Caribbean hitters hacking at slop nightly” ranted Bay Area sports radio talkshow host Larry Krueger about why the San Francisco Giants are playing poorly this year. He also said 70-year-old manager Felipe Alou had a brain “had turned to Cream of Wheat.” For his “racist” and “ageist” comments, he was promptly suspended (although nobody could explain what race “Caribbean” players are). Manager Felipe Alou refused to accept Krueger’s apology and continues to demand that he be fired.

Personally, I think the Giants are so much worse this year because Barry Bonds hasn’t been coming through in clutch situations. Or in unclutch situations, for that matter, since Bonds hasn’t played all year. Last season, at the implausible age of 39, Bonds had the highest single year OPS statistic (on-base percentage plus slugging average) in the history of baseball. In 2005, he’s having his knee tinkered with as he tries to lay low out of the glare of the steroid scandal.

But what about Krueger’s charge that the Giants are swinging at bad pitches? Is it true? Well, the Giants are 15th out of 16 teams in the National League in number of walks, and 12th in on-base percentage, so the charge has some prima facie merit. Last year, the Giants led the league in walks with 705, but that was mostly because Bonds set the all time record with 232, which was 33 percent of the entire 25-man team’s walks.

On the other hand, this year on the Giants, the Hispanics are doing badly at getting walks, but the Anglo (white and black) players are even worse. Among the Giants with 100 plate appearances, the Hispanics are taking walks 8.2% of the time and the Anglos 7.7% of the time. So, Krueger may be off base talking about the Giants in 2005, although he’s watching the team every day, and I’m not.

Nonetheless, the easiest way to get people mad at you is by telling the truth, and the unhinged response to Krueger’s “gaffe” stems from the fact that Latin players have long benefited from what I called “Baseball’s Hidden Ethnic Bias.” In my 2003 article, I pointed out that because baseball executives long didn’t understand the run-producing value of walks, “the Anglo white-dominated baseball establishment had actually tended for decades to discriminate irrationally against Americans and in favor of more free-swinging Latin hitters, who on average weren’t quite as productive as their batting averages indicated.”

This bias has been mitigated somewhat by the recent rise of Bill James-inspired general managers who correctly emphasize on-base percentage over batting average, like Billy Beane of the Oakland Athletics and J.P. Ricciardi of the Toronto Blue Jays (who was criticized for dumping highly paid Latin players like the Raul Mondesi and signing cheaper American whites who were better at getting on base). I pointed out:

Although they are slowly improving, Hispanic players are on average less likely to accept walks than whites or African-Americans. “It’s not easy for a Latin player to take 100 walks,” said Sammy Sosa early in his famous 1998 season.

In 2002, Hispanics had a combined batting average of .264, while everyone else together hit .260. On the other hand, the Hispanic “walk average” was 0.060, while the non-Hispanics’ bases on balls ratio was 0.069, a significant 14 percent higher, leaving the non-Latinos with a five point better on-base percentage.

The patience gap has declined somewhat, from 16 percent in 1992 and 19 percent in 1982, probably because Latinos have largely closed the power gap. Twenty years ago, non-Hispanics hit home runs 42 percent more often than Hispanics, but that difference was only 4 percent last year. More.

Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen weighed in, demanding Krueger be punished more. Guillen is particularly sensitive about aspersions on Caribbean players’ plate discipline because he himself was famously bad at laying off pitches out of the strike zone. His career on-base percentage was a terrible .287.

The San Francisco Giants were the first big league team to seriously tap the mother lode of baseball talent, the sugar cane fields of the eastern Dominican Republic, where black immigrants from Jamaica settled a few generations ago. Besides Hall-of-Famer Juan Marichal, the Giants featured the first all brother outfield in history in 1963, with Felipe (now the manager), Matty, and Jesus Alou.

All three Alou brothers exhibited poor plate discipline. In a combined 47 seasons in the big leagues, none of them ever managed to get 50 walks in one season. Still, Felipe was a good hitter, with some power, and Matty put up gaudy enough batting averages to make up for his lack of homers and lack of walks.

But the only reason Jesus Alou could have stuck around for 15 seasons was because general managers back then evaluated players more by their batting averages (Jesus had a solid-looking career average of .280) and “how they looked in a uniform” rather than their on-base percentage (Jose had an awful .305) and slugging average (a lousy .353 for Jose, who was a slower than average outfielder and miserable base stealer), which dysfunctionally favored Latin ballplayers.

At 6′-2″ and 195, Jesus looked like a terrific baseball player, but for his career, he was only 87% as good as the average hitter, which makes him, among below-average fielders, one of the worst hitters to hang around for 15 years. Today, Billy Beane of Oakland would have immediately traded Jesus for a pudgy-looking college educated white ballplayer who could refrain from swinging at bad pitches.

(Felipe’s son Moises is playing for his father this season at age 38, and he remains a strong hitter. Moises’ plate discipline is better than that of the previous generation of Alous, although it’s not great for a power hitter. Moises peaked at 84 walks when he hit 38 homers in 2000.

A reader writes:

It’s the “John Rocker” incident of the this decade, but it’s getting surprisingly little play outside of Northern California.

Bay Area sportscaster Larry Krueger made the above-referenced comments about Latino baseball players with low batting averages and on-base percentages due to poor judgment about the strike zone.

Felipe Alou, manager of the Giants, and his son Moises have declared an ethnic “no fly” zone over KNBR, the Giants flagship station that employs Krueger – so already the crawling has started, the apologies that aren’t being accepted and the usual sort of thing that inevitably follows an incident like this.

And truth to tell, Krueger’s comments certainly indicate a lack of discretion on his part. He might have made the same point with less inflammatory language. But he also must have the balls of a burglar to say such things in the Bay Area.

But while liberals had a field day with Rocker, I imagine that the relative obscurity about this story is the ultra-liberal SF Bay Area deciding “This doesn’t happen in OUR family” and waiting for the story to go away. Then too, Rocker was a ballplayer and Krueger is himself a member of the media. The news media inevitably protects its own to a greater extent than it protects those whom they cover.

And like Rocker’s comments, Krueger’s have more than a little grain of truth to them. I don’t think that there’s much doubt that if one examined the ratio of walks per plate appearances of Latino versus non-Latino ballplayers, you’d see the Latino ballplayers drawing noticeably fewer walks. Observers of the game – in both the Caribbean leagues and the American major leagues – have politely noted this for some time.

It’s said that Latino hitters are free swingers because they are anxious to impress major league scouts with their hitting prowess. The expression is, “You can’t walk your way off the island”.

But I’m not so sure. I imagine that major league scouts are savvy enough to appreciate a smart hitter who displays patience at the plate, draws his share of walks, and fattens his on-base percentage.

I imagine that the reason why Latino ballplayers swing the bat so readily is more due to the flamboyance with which Latino culture displays itself. Manny Sanguillen, a very good-hitting All Star catcher for the Pirates during the 1970’s, was once asked why he ALWAYS swung at the first pitch, and he replied happily, “Because it makes me feel good”.

Obviously, there have been some great Latino bad-ball hitters (Roberto Clemente possibly being the best example from the past), just as there have been some great non-Latino bad-ball hitters (Yogi Berra).

But mediocre hitters of all backgrounds (there’s a reason why .220 is referred to as the “Mendoza line”; that expression was coined after good-hit, no field shortstop, Mario Mendoza) could probably use a little more patience at home plate.

But I don’t imagine that any of this is going to be discussed intelligently now that the latest auto de fe has started.

WP: Asian Americans speak out against a decades-old ‘model minority’ myth

Yanan Wang writes in the Washington Post:

A column published over a week ago in the New York Times began with what the writer calls “an awkward question”: “Why are Asian Americans so successful in America?”

Nicholas Kristof is no stranger to controversy, and the framing of his first sentence indicates that he knew he would be wading straight into it with a piece titled “The Asian Advantage.” But perhaps even Kristof did not expect the magnitude of the pushback from the Asian American community to be so great that it would prompt him to post a follow-up on Facebook this Saturday.

“My column last weekend on Asian-Americans sparked lots of conversation and criticism,” he wrote, addressing at length the various objections to and interpretations of the column. “Thanks for joining the conversation, whether you were patting me on the back or whacking me over the head.”

While many Asian American commenters said they appreciated Kristof’s attempt to clarify his points, the post likely befuddled others. What could be objectionable, after all, about a column representing as fact the achievements of Asian immigrants in America?

But to many Asian Americans, the column’s opening gambit isn’t just awkward. It’s offensive — and dangerous.

Comments at WP:

* Yanan, you’re posing strawperson arguments. Which conservatives have said “ALL” Asians of color are successful? Which have said all Asians of color are “IMMUNE” from white privilege? A few idiots, and now that’s the dumb argument you’re going to easily topple?

And now to criticize the progressives: they LOVE to trot out the Hmong (and a few other groups as Cambodians) who admittedly do poorly. But it’s funny to see the progressives virtually CELEBRATING the Hmong so that they can claim the evil racist policies of the privileged boring white dominant people are alive and well . Unfortunately for progressives, these Asians of color represent a very small part of the dominant Han, Korean, and Indian students of color who, e.g., dominate STEM majors. Notice what I said: they dominate. I didn’t say ALL stem majors are Asians of color. Some Asians of color even major in education (mostly a joke among other majors). And some Asians will be working in the restaurant or the factory for the rest of their lives. But an amazing number are becoming physicians, computer scientists, lawyers, businesspeople, et al., BOTH women and men.

So Yanan, please stop with the supposed strawperson arguments by calling out the conservatives who claim ALL Asians of color are successful and recognizing not all make such a stupid claim, and please call out the progressives who LOVE to use the relatively small groups of Hmong, Cambodians, etc. as the CELEBRATED example of Asians of color doing poorly in hopelessly racist AmeriKKKa, while there might be other factors (which hopefully can be overcome) to account for the anomaly occurring with these small groups of Asians of color.

* Good God, this is the fourth Post article of this morning that is nothing but standard Post race-baiting…I mean RACE-BLEATING. We’ve already been treated to a middle school that canceled its student officer election because too many white kids won; former NBA player Chris Webber teaching a Master’s-level course on Sports and Race at Wake Forest; and comedian Chris Rock making a “joke” insinuating that RGIII was benched because he was black.

Old newspaper philosophy was “If it bleeds, it leads!” Now it is “If it’s Race, Make it a Headline – Post-Haste!”

* I see these “We’re not the model minority you think we are” articles pop up occasionally, usually written by some Asian Democrat apologist. Yes, we get it that not ALL Asians are smart and successful, but statistically speaking (and statistics don’t lie), Asians outperform all other ethnic groups when it comes to graduation rates,out-of-wedlock pregnancy rates and incarceration rates. Look at the student populations of UCLA and USC and any number of other universities and it’s quite obvious they’re doing something right. We understand that Asians, who mostly vote Democrat, kind of spoil the Democratic agenda that minorities can’t get a fair shot in America, but it is what it is. Take a compliment.

* A genetic disposition towards intelligence combined with a culture of intact families and respect for academics and work. How could they not succeed?

Prejudices are another word for experience.

* Sorry Asian-American whiny people, If you really want white Americans to think less of you it will take a lot more than a few posers in academia and the media shouting out their grievances about “orientalism” or whatever else they picked up in America Sucks 101. Nope, you’ll really have to up your game and do a lot worse in things like divorce, children out of wedlock, incarceration, etc. Oh, and you’ll have to tell your younger siblings and other relations to stop studying and drive down those GPAs and standardized test scores! Until then, we in white America aren’t even going think about coming up with any new racial slurs to apply to you.

* But Asians in America ARE smarter than average (excluding Cambodians and Laotians).

Indians, Chinese, and Filipinos are far more likely to immigrate to the US for their skills as MDs, nurses, STEM graduate students, computer programmers, entrepreneurship, and engineers; when compared to, say Mexicans and Central Americans who are here to work in the fields and clean our bathrooms.

It is not just work ethic, intelligence is mostly inherited and work ethic is inherited in part (there is a test that can be administered to 4 year olds that is highly correlated with adult success). European Americans even after all of these generations are also a cut above those that stayed behind. Blacks descended from slaves were inversely selected. Cambodia killed all their smart people, which is why the refugees are near the bottom of the list in success in the US.

Asians are stereotyped as highly intelligent because so many of them are. Blacks are stereotyped as lazy, welfare criminals because so many of them are. If they don’t like it, they should convince their fellow Asians to dumb down or their fellow blacks to book it up and get a job.

* Asians don’t fall for this PC trap. You are a model minority. People who process refugees from all over the world tell me that Asians are the most obedient, rule following people while Africans and Middle East people act the most entitled, and always complain about how everything is not up to their expectations. Unfortunately, these are the people who become a burden on our societies. Not so much Asians. They are exceptional and how funny they work from Wall Street to Silicon Valley and yet I have never heard a single one of them complain about racism. In fact they are extremely well settled and integrated into American society while maintaining their unique identities. Also, I am not sure why Black Lives Matter people talk about brown people. I have never seen any brown people complain like these radical, lazy, entitled , people who constitute Black Lives Matter. Look what happened to Venezuela after the radical left took over that country? Never, ever let them do it here. They are immature with ego and narcissistic tendencies who like to constantly find victims because that gives them an adrenal rush and makes their useless existence worthwhile.

* Oh please, a minority of who went to study some useless degree in identity politics or cultural studies took to twitter to criticize Kristoff doesn’t negate the fact that Asians are model minorities. Also, the majority of who are extremely successful don’t have time to take to twitter and criticize an article. In Germany the Vietnamese community which came during the war and then faced incredible backlash by the Germans has now go on to become the most successful minority community in Germany even surpassing Germans. That says a lot about Asian community. You don’t like because then it negates the idea that everyone else is responsible for your fate and destiny.

* So Kristof is a racist. We kinda knew that already didn’t we?

But kudos to the ostensibly Asian reporter for highlighting Asian grievances without acknowledging the biggest one of all; enthusiastic state-sponsored anti-Asian discrimination in university admissions.

* The reason the liberal intelligentsia is so sensitive about this point is that it has the potential to blow a massive, catastrophic hole in their central argument about “white privilege.”

South Asians are brown-skinned. In some instances, really brown skinned, as in darker than African-Americans. Although many immigrants from there are doctors and lawyers and engineers, many others are cab drivers and gas station attendants. Considering how little time they have had in this country, their success in not only medicine/engineering but also law, journalism, business is astounding. To deny that fact is ludicrous.

It gives liberals the willies.

* Well, all I know is that Asian-Americans don’t riot and loot, don’t shoot each other daily in the ghettos, and don’t have Asian Lives Matter militancy, in America, like another race.

WP: S.F. middle school delays election results because winners not diverse enough

Washington Post:

When Everett held its election three days later, its principal promptly refused to release the results, saying she was concerned that the winners were not diverse enough.

While she would ultimately relent and release the results, her decision spurred anger among parents and kids who felt that the principal was putting diversity ahead of democracy. Critics compared her to a dictator who scraps elections when results don’t go her way. It was the middle school equivalent of hanging chads and a near political crisis, only without a Supreme Court to hear the case…

“It’s not okay for a school that is really, really diverse to have the student representatives majority white,” she told the Chronicle. “The easy thing would have been to announce the results and move on. I intentionally did not choose the easy way because this is so important.”

…“I could never have predicted things would get to this point,” she told the Chronicle, adding that she hoped the civics lesson gone wrong could still be “a teachable moment.”

As soon as I read the first few paragraphs of this story, I figured the principal was a woman.

Comments at WP:

* When are the WASPs going to riot about lack of representation in NBA/NFL/MLB?

* A. That things would “get to this point” was obviously predictable to anyone who understood civics and Americans’ love of the democratic process.
B. Yes, this is a teachable moment about how the Left finds democracy to be in the way of its agenda. (Also, how to not make a PC fool of yourself).

* Basically this white liberal woman does not feel that when people of color are given their freedom they are able to act in their best interest and need an intelligent white overseer to correct them when they make a stupid mistake like voting to have white overseers.

* A civics lesson in liberal racism and tyranny. The students had the right to vote only if their vote conformed to the expectations of the principal. Next we will hear that those who voted incorrectly will be required to attend “vote counseling” so they won’t vote contrary to the dictates of school administrators in the future.

LAT: Why Iowa’s graduation rate is so much higher than California’s

Such a mystery. I just can’t figure it out.

From LATimes.com:

It’s hard to know exactly what’s going on with the numbers, Howard said. “We gotta dig deep to figure out what’s at play.”

I went to Wikipedia and looked at Iowa’s racial demographics: “According to the 2010 Census, 91.3% of the population was White (88.7% non-Hispanic white), 2.9% was Black or African American, 0.4% American Indian and Alaska Native, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 1.8% from two or more races. 5.0% of the total population was of Hispanic or Latino origin (they may be of any race).”

Perhaps that has something to do with Iowa’s high graduation rate? White and East Asians tend to graduate from high school, blacks and latinos struggle to graduate from high school.

Right-Wing Grows In Europe

REPORT:

The growing popularity of the far-right Sweden Democrats mirrors a backlash being felt across Europe as the continent reckons with a refugee crisis that has broken all modern records and shows no sign of abating. The impact can be seen in country after country, with far-right parties hammering away at authorities deemed too permissive in allowing those fleeing war and persecution to find a home in Europe.

Anger over the refugee influx is increasingly fueling violence, as it appeared to do over the weekend when two Swedish schools that were being converted into shelters for asylum seekers burned down in what police said were suspected arson attacks. In the German city of Cologne, a leading mayoral candidate and ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel was stabbed in the neck by a man whom authorities said had “anti-foreigner motives.”

Meanwhile, the backlash is already having an effect at the polls. In Austria, the far-right Freedom Party achieved its highest-ever vote share in municipal elections this month while in Switzerland on Sunday the ultraconservative Swiss People’s Party won a clear victory after campaigning against asylum chaos.” In Poland, a nationalist party whose leader has warned that refugees will bring “parasites” and “cholera” to Europe is expected to triumph over the ruling centrists in a vote coming up on Sunday. Merkel’s approval ratings have dropped as Germany has accepted a historic number of refugees. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has only been strengthened as his government has rolled out mile after mile of barbed wire to keep them out.

“In terms of popularity, the real winners of this crisis are almost exclusively on the right,” the Eurasia political consulting group recently concluded in a research note.

Comments at WP:

* How we are handling the Islamist problem is akin to treating cancer by disseminating the tumor cells throughout the body.

* One massive study done on immigrants in 16 European countries shows crime rates at min are 300% in some countries and as much as 500% higher in others than those that were of that country’s ethic background. The highest crime rates for immigrants were in France and Germany at a bit over 500%. And as for sexual crimes the rates climb 400 to 700 percent for first and second generation immigrants in those sixteen countries over those of that country’s ethnic background.

* In this case, the facts are hateful and racist.

Right now, in the “refugee camps”, the Muslims are talking about how best to co-exist with the LGBT communities, and instructing their young men on when a woman says “no”, she means “no”.

* Maybe the so-called “far-right” is just reacting to a huge mistake by the “far-left.” Maybe the people of Sweden (and Germany) are finally realizing how big a mistake Merkel made, a decision in which they had no voice.

* To progressives the far right are people who ask crazy question like:

“So who’s going to pay for this?”
“What’s the impact to our society if we absorb this many people?”
“Are these people willing to assimilate?”

In fact, progressives consider these types of questions as “hate speech”.

* Huh, you think this is bad. Check out the NY Times editorials. Their editorial board is usually too liberal for me. And I’m not a conservative by any stretch of the imagination. They just had one about how sanctuary cities laws should not apply to the laws of the Federal government! I saw maybe 2 comments out of 1,000 agreeing with their editorial board.

* Muslims will rapidly assimilate into Swedish culture.

* Apparently, there are a lot of Swedes unwilling to commit national suicide.

* Every country had a duty to absorb some Islamist casualties.

* It seems that the Muslims pretty universally hate the Jews. Why would any country afford its hospitality to a populace that seeks to spread its hatred of the Jews? Why welcome such a group that does not come to assimilate but to cause dissension among citizens when they realize they have imposers of Sharia within their midst! Canada is now feeling the pressure. Obama’s efforts to bring this same incompatible populace into the USA can only result in chaos!

* I still haven’t heard anyone guesstimate how many refugees can be brought into Sweden, Austria, Germany, Belgium, etc. without changing the culture; when will the WEST no longer resemble the WEST? Does that matter at all to the irrational morons who are all in favor of this?

* The typical liberal take on the problem. The nice left wing, along with the Muslims are welcoming them with open arms, and only nasty right wing racists and fascists are opposed.
Somehow, in this discussion the attacks by Muslims on the Jewish residents has been omitted, especially it was pretty much ignored by the government. Have there also been other problems with the earlier immigrants that are concerning the residents about a larger influx? Not if you read the Washington Post.

* Swedes do not want to one day wake up to the call to prayer blaring from loudspeakers in minarets across the land at the crack of dawn and then five times a day while their church bells are silenced in the name of “cultural sensitivity.”

* WHY is it that Frenchmen and -women, Germans, Swedes, the Swiss, Dutch, and others who wish to *preserve* their unique cultures against a religion whose political and religious scripture requires the forcible conversion of “infidels”–WHY is it that these conscientious Europeans are by definition called “racist”?

Are they not the indigenous (at least for the past five to seven thousand years) inhabitants of their lands? Even in the most turbulent lands, their soon-not-to-be-majority inhabitants have been there for at least 1500 years. Why should everything be handed over to “migrants” who are just looking for handouts? If these “migrants” were true refugees, they would stop at the first free country and kiss the ground.

But no: they want a free this, a free that, and everything free forever, because that’s what the propaganda they believed in-country told them.

* No mention of what is happening in Gothenberg where the Islamic mob has declared a Caliphate. They are demanding Swedish girls cover themselves while gangs of Islamic boys attack Swedish girls at will. They are inscribing Swedes homes with the Arabic symbol for Christians and demanding they convert. Europe, under the leadership of Progressive Liberal Useful Idiots is committing suicide.

Typical one sided reporting of WaPo and the other useful idiots of the MSM.

* One thing that Americans sympathetic to the migrants with their melting pot culture and a population of 320 million people that’s big enough to absorb just about anything have trouble understanding is that there is no such thing as Europe other than as a geographic entity. Europe is many distinct cultures that have existed for hundreds of years, some very small. In the face of this enormous mass migration of Islamic culture that destroys everything that disagrees with it and with its high birth rates, many of those European cultures would completely disappear. Even a large nation like Germany would be fundamentally changed.

How Is Mark Dayton Governor Of MN?

From The New Republic in 2010: Mark Dayton’s place in Washington’s collective memory can be distilled to exactly one moment, on one day: October 12, 2004. That morning, Dayton, a freshman Democratic senator from Minnesota, appeared in front of a line of TV cameras and announced that in the coming weeks the Capitol would likely be the target of a terrorist attack. He knew this, he said, because of classified information he and his Senate colleagues had received, and, as a safety precaution, he was closing his Washington office for the fall recess and sending his staff elsewhere until after the following month’s election.

In the hours that followed, nearly every congressman, Bush administration spokesman, and law enforcement official within earshot of a reporter delivered a unified response, the gist of which was that Mark Dayton was crazy. The Capitol Police and Department of Homeland Security professed to know nothing of any new specific threat. “He’s unnecessarily panicked people across the United States,” D.C. Democratic Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton told The Washington Post.

The facts at the center of the affair are still classified. But fairly or otherwise, the office closure stands as the moment around which an unsparing consensus on Dayton crystallized in Washington, best captured in a 2006 Time article naming him one of America’s five worst senators. The magazine mocked his “erratic behavior,” his tendency to complain about “basic facts of the job,” and his penchant for Yippie-ish legislative stunts like proposing a Department of Peace and Nonviolence. The reporters dubbed him “The Blunderer.”

Four months after he closed down his office, Dayton’s poll numbers had fallen, and he announced that he wouldn’t run for reelection. By his final days in Washington, Dayton had relapsed into alcoholism for the first time in 20 years and sought treatment for depression. Asked by a high school class what grade he would give himself, Dayton—typically honest to the point of self-annihilation—suggested an F.

When I met Dayton recently, on a sticky hot Saturday afternoon in August in the Twin Cities, I asked him if he stood by that grade. “I stand by the grade I gave the whole U.S. Senate—that was never reported,” he replied. “But I give myself an A for effort.” Dayton was shaking the hands of well-wishers in the lobby of a carpenters’ union hall on the east side of St. Paul, where the central committee of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (or DFL, Minnesota’s variant on the Democratic Party) had just endorsed Dayton as the party’s candidate for governor. As of this writing, the man who left the Senate after one term with a 43 percent approval rating stands a narrowly better-than-even chance of being Minnesota’s first Democratic governor in 20 years.

At times like this it’s tempting to armchair-psychoanalyze Minnesotan voters, because in Minnesota there are a lot of times like this. Minnesotans voted for Walter Mondale when 49 other states voted for Ronald Reagan. They voted for Jesse Ventura when 49 states would have voted for almost anyone else. In 2006, adjacent congressional districts in the Minneapolis area simultaneously elected Democrat Keith Ellison, a liberal African American convert to Islam and the first Muslim in Congress, and Republican Michele Bachmann, whose opinions about Islam are—well, you can probably guess. Minnesotans have sent a former comedian to the Senate and a former Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle to the state Supreme Court. The state’s Republicans have been hanging Time’s “erratic” epithet around Dayton’s neck at every available occasion, but it’s hard to imagine a worse misreading of Minnesota’s political temperament. You might as well attack the governor of Texas for being too fond of Stetsons.
