The Case For Immigration Insurance

Comment to Arnold Kling:

As for why immigrants (or their employers) should buy insurance when natives don’t have to, note that immigrant insurance covers only risks added by migration! People (foreigners or citizens) who remain in their native countries instead of migrating would not have to buy immigration insurance because they do not add any risks in the destination country (the base costs of the risks they pose in their own countries are covered by local arrangements). Consider a hot-tempered Pakistani who poses a 1% annual risk of murdering someone. If he remains in Pakistan the annual expected value of his bad temper to his neighbors is 0.01 times less than $1 million, but when he enters the USA it becomes 0.01 times more than $9 million. Furthermore, in Pakistan, however much harm that hothead inflicts on his neighbors, he can inflict virtually no harm on Americans. Asking that Pakistani to carry Sudden Jihad Syndrome insurance while he is in America is like asking him to carry liability insurance while he drives a car in America. The insurance is for incremental risk. (Note that immigration insurance might as well be symmetrical– if the USA requires it other countries may also.)

The fact that different immigrants, individually or (for example) by national groups pose different risks would be reflected in their insurance premiums, more or less accurately depending on actuarial considerations and how much regulatory “anti-discrimination” foolishness was injected into premium-setting. High premiums might discourage some prospective migrants. That would be a good thing– forcing immigrants (or their employers) to internalize costs which they now palm off on everyone else. Of course, if insurers were required to “community rate” all immigrants equally instead of distinguishing Brahmins from Salafis, the system would not work as well. If immigrants really aren’t very dangerous then their insurance premiums won’t be very high.

In fact, the big cost would not be insuring against criminal behavior, but against social spending (welfare) consumption. “Community-rated” premiums for that would track the mean expected outlay, which is around $14,000 annually for households in the income range of the mean immigrant household of about $60K (citations on request). Individually-underwritten premiums would vary a lot– immigrant scientists, for example, might pay very little. If we truly cut off social spending on immigrants, we wouldn’t have to ask for insurance against it. (Despite the oft-repeated big lie that immigrants are “not eligible for welfare,” they actually are. Really. Please don’t make me provide the citations again.)

Sailer didn’t offer a detailed proposal. He was trying to put across the point that some immigrants inflict outsized costs– way more than their individual labor is worth– and those are currently absorbed by citizens at large instead of by the folks who benefit from immigration (the immigrants themselves and employers). Employers want to privatize profits (cheap labor) and socialize costs (e.g., Obamacare subsidies for immigrants [official link]). Textbook theory says we should press them to internalize all their costs. There is an insurable risk, and the premiums should be paid by immigrants. For those who work the costs would pass through to their employers and for those who don’t (currently 2/5) the costs would fall on whoever supports them. Employers certainly could pay premiums for SJS insurance. The moral hazard would be small because employers do approximately nothing to control immigrants now so they could hardly do less.

Universities catch almost 50,000 student cheats

The Guardian: UK figures from last three years show non-EU students four times more likely to cheat in exams and coursework essays.

One professor said he believed the use of professional essay writers, whose services are widely available on the internet, was on the rise.

Geoffrey Alderman of the University of Buckingham told the paper: “What I’d call type-1 plagiarism, copying and pasting, is on the wane because it’s so easy to detect. But my impression is that type-2 cheating, using a bespoke essay-writing service, is increasing.”

Such services can charge hundreds of pounds for essays, dissertations and model exam answers written by professional lecturers up to doctorate level.

The Case For Discrimination

Comments to Steve Sailer:

* The word “discrimination” is a fight word. Make any distinction between two things today, however innocuous, and it seems someone will accuse you of discrimination.

But I’m at loose ends. I was taught that “discrimination” is the source of all knowledge as we learn to discriminate between truth and falsehood. I spent 20 years in school learning how to discriminate. We should, I would think, discriminate all of the time; it should become a life project. Otherwise, how can we make our way through the day? How can we collectively establish a peaceful, democratic, and productive industrial society and functioning families if we do not find and discriminate the preferred solutions among all of the lesser solutions?

Some days are hotter than others; some practical choices in life put our lives at higher risk than other choices; some women are more beautiful than others; some investments are safer than others; some attempts at describing particle physics are consistent with the evidence and some are not. Some people are smarter than others; some people are healthier than others; some religions and cultures are conducive to democracy and some are not; and some immigration policies are dangerous and some are not. This goes on and on.

However, the current PC doctrine is that “discrimination is wrong”. I guess some people don’t want us to notice the way the world works (or doesn’t work), and how we should best navigate that world. I guess they want us to be perpetually stupid (a.k.a. without knowledge … living lives of illusion) so we won’t notice the impact of their agendas on us. I can’t think of any other reason for someone so say something so stupid as, “Discrimination is wrong ….!”

* Discrimination is bad but perhaps a better word would be discernment? Most people, especially SJWs, like to think of themselves as “discerning.”

* The solution is logically simple, but politically impossible.

One, you could hand out welfare checks to women paired with a Depo shot. Or require them to implant some longer term birth control.

Or, if that isn’t workable, you could simply cap the welfare payments to single-parent households at three. Any more than replacement kids, and you can pay for them on your own dime.

Of course, both these simple and cost-effective ideas are complete political suicide to propose. But they are there, waiting. When the culture changes, they will be waiting.

* Living in and around the ghetto for a lot of my life, I’ve never been convinced the economic incentives that work on whites would work on blacks. They obviously don’t work on Hispanics. Limiting increases to welfare payments to one child would have little impact on behavior. Instead, you would have to implement mandatory birth control as Israel does with the Ethiopians.

That said, this is looking through the wrong end of the telescope. The social issue to address is illegitimacy. Before Civil Rights, about 15% of black children were in single parent homes. Today it is 80%. White illegitimacy has also spiked so it is not all blamed on the end of segregation.

* The key with self-esteem is that you need an identity/personality. Since contemporary discourse de-legitimises most healthy, grounded identities this is a common problem. I’d recommend you join the Army, ‘get’ religion or something else similar but really you might as well just find a hobby that people are passionate about and get really involved.

* Here’s a very simple solution: If you’re on welfare, you’re on Norplant (or some other highly reliable contraceptive). If and when you go off welfare, you don’t have to be on Norplant. You can have all the children you want, just not at taxpayer expense.

It’s not physically damaging. It’s not permanent. Most important politically, it’s race-neutral and would be difficult to portray as racist. If there’s a male version of Norplant, you could also make it sex-neutral.

Of course, it would have disparate impact and would hamper the breeding of a vast population of Morlocks to destroy America and Americans, so it has little chance of being implemented. But it would be hard even for Smooth Talker Barack to give a persuasive argument against it.

* More orientals=low trust society, stagnant society, dishonest society.

* The most effective way to get low-IQ women on birth control would be my “smartphone for birth control” incentive. Women who take birth control would receive a free smart phone with a fully paid plan so long as they check in and get their shot/maintain implant every three months. It should neither be mandatory nor discriminatory, i.e. every woman of reproductive age could take advantage of it and none would be forced to do so.

If you’ve ever lived in an urban underclass area you’d know why it would work. Those smartphones are the sine qua non of romance these days.

I estimate the cost would be around $1,500 per year per female, so it would only take preventing one birth out of twenty (that’s probably on the conservative side) or so to pay for itself.

* About twenty years ago, commentator George Will suggested that the government forcibly implement a policy on all teenaged girls regarding Norplant. Norplant, while it does not prevent an STD, has been proven to be effective for up to four years. So, if every teenaged girl were given Norplant in say, urban public schools at age 16, you’ve virtually solved the teenage pregnancy problem. Virtually, but not entirely, but still that would be a strong step in the right direction toward virtually eliminating the problem.

Norplant for virtually all teenaged girls was in fact one of Will’s best recommendations. That and term limits for congressmen.

* William Shockley had the right idea:

A cash payment for sterilization, based on each point below IQ 100.
The payment per point must be made so substantial that it makes an offer that just cannot be refused – we are talking tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars here.

* Yeah, libertarianism seemed sexy as a teenager but now I think it doesn’t work. I suspect Silicon Valley types and urban professionals can make it work in their own lives but I doubt it works with a mean IQ below 120 and average or below-average conscientiousness/future-time-orientation (which every nation on earth actually has). People below a certain level of affluence need religion (West) or tradition and custom (East) to tell them how to live healthy lives.

* According to economists, the cost of raising a child in a high-income western country is somewhere around $13, 000 dollars US per child. This makes it virtually impossible for working class parents to raise three children properly, yet low-income parents are never advised by teachers, social workers, journalists or politicians to have fewer children or stop having kids while on welfare.

Similarly, the rich, who are apparently getting richer, are never told to have more kids to help narrow the wealth gap and increase the supply of smart kids.

The mainstream right lacks the balls to challenge blank slate ideology, while the mainstream left is unwilling to tell the poor the harsh truth that can’t raise kids properly on low wage jobs and government welfare that is increasingly going to be directed towards the elderly.

* Alpha can be quite bad and socially destructive. (I remember arguing on Heartiste before it went full Nazi with one of the posters who claimed that Hitler was beta, and I pointed out–well, you might not like him, but seizing control of one of the world’s predominant industrial powers is about as alpha as it gets.) Even if, like a lot people here, you think Adolf was peachy, boinking lots of women and having lots of children you can’t pay for is something only an alpha can do, is practiced by the underclass of all shades, and it is downright terrible for society. Indeed, one of the things successful societies do is find ways to keep alpha males in check while still using them for the greater good.

I loved Fight Club too. The allure of the rebel is that he exists outside the rules we all have to follow, which get really annoying at times–and when the dominant group doesn’t like you, even more so.

PUA’s are all about getting laid–thus the name, ‘pick-up artist’. This is regardless of morality or long-term consequences. Mocking the disabled is definitely un-Christian. Eventually your attractiveness wanes and all you get are divorcees with kids, and after that nobody at all. To any younger people reading this, I’d say read their stuff with an eye to picking up techniques that are useful, but don’t adopt their whole philosophy, because it gets a lot less fun after 35. It’s actually a good skill to read multiple points of view without totally buying into each one–I read this site, NYTimes, Alternet, and National Review Online.

One of the things that got lost with the death of Christianity was the idea that there might be other valid goals than sexual and/or financial success. I don’t think Aquinas got much play (though hundreds of years later who knows what dalliances might be lost to history?), and Newton prided himself on his chastity. So, hey, if you decided you didn’t want to live in a cubicle…well, I can’t really blame you. Problem is, you need to pay rent and health insurance, because eventually you will get sick.

But does it make sense? Sure, it makes sense. You’re not crazy. (There’s a certain personality type that’s suspicious of authority but still loyal to group and tribe that gets attracted to the alt-right, I think.) When you’re younger and you’re not that greedy, you forget that you’ll be older and decrepit one day without a wife or kids to fall back on. A lack of materialism is good for one thing–you can save more money because you don’t really care about keeping up with the Joneses. You know you don’t need that big-screen TV or that new pickup, so you can hoard the rest of it.

* My take is that the way to tackle this is “workfare”. You don’t have cash welfare as such. You have a minimum wage make work jobs program–pick up trash, pull weeds, mow parks, rake leaves, shovel snow, clean public toilets, etc. etc.–that includes access to birth control. You don’t work … you don’t eat.

Work–stuff like “showing up on time”, “not acting like a nut”–has all sorts of positive benefits beyond just a fixed income that doesn’t scale with more kids. And if someone truly can not do those things, they’ve ripped away the leftist nonsense that it’s capitalism, or “good jobs” that’s the problem. You can easily make the case that people who can’t even handle the make work job are too incompetent to have children and subject to sterilization if supported by the taxpayers.

Giving people unearned cash to support themselves is an absolutely terrible social program.

* Steve,
For your consideration this year, include prescriptives in addition to the descriptives.

Your fertile mind generates articles to introduce your reader base to many early warning topics and so a natural extension would be to provide some policy considerations and solutions. Here are some ideas.

Blacks – What realistic solutions may reduce illegitimate births, broken homes and crime rates?

Jews – How do citizenists accelerate the crumbling Megaphone to highlight Jewish hypocrisy toward US social policies and Israel immigration and treatment of Palestinians?

SJWs – What campus groups may use university policies and constitutional tools to communicate the absurdity of academic discourse?

Media – Which added counterpoints and sources may be consulted and publicized to highlight dissembling and other non-journalistic activities by MSM outlets?

Thank you for helping put into words what so many people around the world have sensed but could not articulate.

John Le Carre & The Jews

From page 391 of the new biography:

In reality David had felt sympathetic towards Jews from an early age, and had consistently portrayed Jewish characters such as Fiedler or the Fennans sympathetically in his novels. Like many of his contemporaries, he supported the creation of a Jewish national home and admired the energy and courage with which the Israelis had built a modern state. But his visits to Palestinian refugee camps showed him the other side of the story. He came to believe that “a great injustice” had been done, to salve the conscience of Europeans for their own crimes against the Jews. “We gave them a country that was not ours to give,” he would say later.

From pages 518-521:

In the New York Times Book Review, the novelist Norman Rush praised The Tailor of Panama as a ‘tour de force’, though he found the American characters ‘rather sketchily delineated’, which he thought might be ascribed to ‘Mr. le Carre’s famous ambivalence towards Americanity’. For Rush, a more substantial defect lay in a troubling aspect of Pendel’s character: ‘here we have, however little Mr. le Carre intended it, yet another literary avator of Judas’. The detail of Pendel’s background added to his unease. ‘As you read, the phrase ‘rootless cosmopolitans’ scratches at the door of your mind.’

Rush’s review caused dismay at Knopf. The suggestion of anti-Semitism, in America’s greatest newspaper, was extremely damaging. After several anguished telephone conversations, David went into his publishers’ offices to discuss how he should respond. ‘The atmosphere was of near catastrophe and collective funk,’ David would write later. He was ‘deeply wounded’ by what he saw as a ‘smear’; he wanted to react strongly by writing a letter of protest to the New York Times, but as he offered one text after another for collective consideration, he discovered that he was only compounding his offence: ‘David, if you write that, your career in the United States will be ruined’; ‘David, are you trying to tell us that this city is full of Jews?’; ‘David, are you suggesting that the New York Times is Jewish-controlled?’

…David was unwilling to leave it at that, and another letter of his appeared in a subsequent issue of the New York Times. He was delighted, he wrote, to learn from Norman Rush’s reply “that he doesn’t think I’m an anti-Semite, because he could have fooled me. Not one of the whole army of literary agents, editors, publishers and friends who commented on my novel ‘The Tailor of Panama’ on its way to publication expressed a whisper of discomfort about my treatment of Pendel’s Jewishness. No other reviewer in Britain or America has referred to it. As to your wisdom in giving currency to such non-accusations, I trust your readers will form their own opinions. Mine is unprintable.”

In an interview with George Plimpton of the Paris Review, conducted in front of an audience while David was still in New York promoting The Tailor of Panama, he was asked about the charge of anti-Semitism. ‘I have had some pretty big tomatoes thrown at me in my time, but this one missed,’ he told Plimpton. ‘All my life… I have been fascinated, enchanted, drawn to and horrified by the plight of middle European Jews… It is the one issue in my own life on which I may say I have a clean record.’ An article in the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz dismissed the accusation of anti-Semitism as ‘rubbish’.

In 1997 David was invited to speak at the annual dinner of the Anglo-Israel Association. It was suggested, perhaps mischievously, that he might care to say something about ‘the oversensitivity of the Jews of the diaspora.’ David took the opportunity to examine ‘the mystery of what I may call my Jewish conscience’, tracing his experience of Jewish people from childhood, and the portrayal of Jews in his work. Norman Rush’s review of The Tailor of Panama formed his starting-point. The implied charge of anti-Semitism, he said, ‘hurt me more deeply than any other brickbat that has been tossed my way in forty-odd years before the literary mast’. As someone who felt himself to be ‘an outsider in his country’, David claimed ‘a spiritual kinship’ with Jews, ‘that embraces what is creative in me, and forgives what is despicable, and shares with me the dignity and solitude and anger that are born of alienation.’ In his conclusion, David hit back at ‘the whole oppressive weight of political correctness, a form of modern McCarthyism in reverse’. He insisted on his right, as a non-Jew but as a convinced supporter of the nation state of Israel, to condemn Israeli actions without being branded an anti-Semite. He vigorously asserted his right to depict Jewish characters in his novels with as many flaws as any other. His talk was a plea for tolerance and openness, with respect but without inhibition. His closing exhortation encapsulated his message: ‘Take me back to Israel, where people are free to speak their minds!’

Alan Clark

From Wikipedia:

Clark held strong views on British unionism, racial difference, social class, and was in support of animal rights, nationalist protectionism and Euroscepticism. He referred to Enoch Powell as “The Prophet”. Clark once declared: “It is natural to be proud of your race and your country”, and in a departmental meeting, allegedly referred to Africa as “Bongo Bongo Land”.[34] When called to account, however, by then Prime Minister John Major, Clark denied the comment had any racist overtones, claiming it had simply been a reference to the President of Gabon, Omar Bongo.

Clark argued that the media and the government failed to pick out the racism towards white people and ignored any racist attacks on white people. He also however described the National Front chairman, John Tyndall, as “a bit of a blockhead”[36] and disavowed his ideas.

When Clark was Minister for Trade, responsible for overseeing arms sales to foreign governments, he was interviewed by journalist John Pilger who asked him:[37]

JP “Did it bother you personally that you were causing such mayhem and human suffering (by supplying arms for Indonesia’s war in East Timor)?”
AC “No, not in the slightest, it never entered my head.”
JP “I ask the question because I read you are a vegetarian and you are quite seriously concerned about the way animals are killed.”
AC “Yeah”
JP “Doesn’t that concern extend to the way humans, albeit foreigners, are killed?”
AC “Curiously not. No.”
While involved in the Matrix Churchill trial he was cited in a divorce case in South Africa, in which it was revealed he had had affairs with Valerie Harkess, the wife of a South African barrister (and part-time junior judge), and her daughters Josephine and Alison.[38] After sensationalist tabloid headlines, Clark’s wife Jane remarked upon what Clark had called “the coven” with the line: “Well, what do you expect when you sleep with below stairs types?”, and referred to her husband as an “S, H, one, T”…

The diaries reveal recurring worries about Japanese militarism but his real views are often not clear because he enjoyed making “tongue in cheek” remarks to the discomfiture of those he believed to be fools, as in his sympathy for a British version of National Socialism.

Theranos: The Elizabeth Holmes Reality Distortion Field

Comments to Steve Sailer:

* I wondered once if this might be a government ploy to get genetic material on billions of people worldwide over the next twenty years. And then track their every move by analyzing sewage systems, like they did with bin laden. This chick might just be an actor playing a role. But the creators goofed up and made her too similar to Steve jobs.

* If you look carefully at Holmes’ business model and how she, throughout her life, seduces male professors and politicians and investors and nerds, she is a classic example of the “whiny, needy, and foxy” female. In short, she finds father figures, portrays herself as a vulnerable and deserving daughter figure, and begs them for protection and help. The vulnerable men comply … it’s in their DNA.

I’m reminded of a survey going back years to the point that most young people on their way to Europe for a post-high school trip were young girls on trips paid for by their fathers. However, to toughen them, they kept their sons at home, making sure that they understood they had to make it through life on their own.

I wonder how Holmes would fair in the society of women … somewhere she perhaps tries to avoid and where she doesn’t ply her wares. Would they quickly find her out? I think so.

Two weeks after release, Arab girl tries to stab again

From Arutz Sheva:

15-year-old indicted for two attempted murders after police arrest and let her go; in first attack she was armed with a Koran and 5 knives.

An indictment was filed Monday against a 15-year-old Arab girl for two counts of attempted murder and two counts of possession of a knife, after she tried twice to carry out deadly stabbing attacks against Jews in Jerusalem.

According to the indictment, on December 6 the terrorist minor decided to carry out a deadly stabbing attack against Jews and die during the attack, in order to become a “martyr.”

The girl left her home in the morning with a Koran and a cutting board in her backpack, and headed to Damascus Gate in the Old City. Upon her arrival, she entered a store on Sultan Suleiman Street and bought a set of five knives in various sizes. Afterwards, she proceeded to the City of David compound to carry out the attack.

When she reached the compound she entered the bathroom and opened the knife kit, pulled out the biggest knife and put it in her backpack. She then sat down on a bench and looked for a suitable victim to stab to death. However, a tourist who suspected her behavior alerted security forces and they arrested her and prevented the attack.

The minor lied to police during the interrogation and claimed that she bought the knives for her home kitchen. The next day, the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court ordered her release to house arrest for two days under the supervision of her parents.

Two weeks later, the minor decided to try again. She arrived in the morning to the Old City, with a serrated kitchen knife in her backpack and decided to execute the attack in the Jewish Quarter. But first, she entered the Temple Mount compound where she remained for some time, and prayed in the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

When she reached the Jewish quarter in the early afternoon, she started looking for a suitable victim to stab. At around 2 p.m. she took the knife out of the bag and hid it in a nearby fence then sat down on a bench in the plaza. Once again, she aroused the suspicion of a passerby, who alerted security forces, who then proceeded conducted a search. When it turned out that she wasn’t carrying anything, they told her to leave.

Shortly after, she returned to the spot where she hid the knife, secretly placed it into the sleeve of her shirt, and again searched for a suitable victim to stab to death. Shortly before 3 p.m. she was arrested by security forces who prevented another deadly attack.

Two Killed, Seven Wounded in Shooting at Tel Aviv Pub

What percentage of Israel’s population hates Israel? About 20%?

What percentage of America’s population hates the country? Or, to ask the question differently, what percentage of America loves America? I suspect those voting Republican tend to love America and the rest are ambivalent to hostile.

Why would a country want residents who are hostile? A smart serious nation would want a nation that was as patriotic as Japan.

Haaretz: Massive manhunt underway for suspect, identified as an Israeli Arab; two seriously wounded in shooting on corner of Gordon and Dizengoff; growing consensus among security officials that shooting was a terrorist attack.

Two people were killed and seven were wounded in an apparent shooting attack in a central Tel Aviv pub on Friday afternoon. A massive manhunt is underway for the assailant.
The police have identified an Israeli Arab resident of a village in the northern area of Wadi Ara as the suspect. The suspect, 29, stole the gun from his father, who works in security. The father recognized the suspect from media reports, and after learning his weapon was gone, contacted the authorities.
Two of the casualties are in serious condition, while the rest sustained light injuries.
