I was having lunch with two Gentile friends this past week, and this really goyish goy asked me about the Jewish community harboring criminals from goyisha justice and whether that might fuel anti-semitism.
I replied that the rabbis in their written responses to these issues had considered every point he had raised and spent thousands of pages elaborating on these matters.
"But I want to know what you think," he pressed.
My response was that I didn’t care what I think. I wanted to know what the Jewish tradition says on this question.
Later that night, I pressed an Orthodox rabbi into a theological discussion. Did he believe that God intervened in our daily lives? Are good things more likely to happen if we pray for them?
He responded by citing various statements from the Talmud.
I got impatient with him. "But what do you think?" I pressed.
