Comments: “Israel had no problem with Assad except when he was acting as Iran’s errand boy. The border with Syria has been quiet with 30+ years. A stable dictatorship is good to work with – they are a known quantity and are capable of keeping their word. If they don’t, you know that it came from the top and respond accordingly. Even now, Israel has been careful to remain neutral in the Syrian civil war – their ground rules are that they retaliate if anyone (whether Assad or rebel) violates their frontier but otherwise they will just watch while the Syrians kill each other.”
* Other than random internet comments, I’ve never seen any proof that Israel wants Assad out. I admit I haven’t read intensively but WikiLeaks reveals ambiguous attitudes. They didn’t like him for supporting Hizb. and Hamas, but admitted he kept the border quiet. Any solid evidence they were trying to remove him?
