Los Angeles Jewish News

* The latest issue of Jewish Community Foundation magazine profiles Aron Abecassis, real estate magnet and Etz Jacob philanthropist.

* Beth Jacob reacquired the lot at the corner of Doheny and Olympic that was lost during the financial crisis of Rabbi Abner Weiss’s last years. One of the big machers in the shul is buying and donating it. Prediction: acquiring the lot is a prelude to a massive building campaign to put up a new building on the bigger lot. If Beth Jacob does it right, this will be the banquet hall for simchas that Pico-Robertson is sorely lacking.

* YICC (Young Israel of Century City) recently did a needs assessment for potential construction because they are bursting at the seams. It came back with a price tag over $15m.  At that price, I think most people there would prefer to see some of the shul splinter off and either form new shuls or support previous spin offs like Adas Torah on Beverly Drive, which is thriving.

* YINBH (Young Israel of North Beverly Hills, the richest Orthodox synagogue in Los Angeles) has a rabbinic search underway. Six months ago Rabbi Shalom Tendler (Aron’s uncle) resigned. He is devoting himself full time to his new school.

Why Does The Way Of The Wicked So Entrance Me?

I’m nearly finished with Bruce Duffy’s novel ("The World As I Found It") about philosophers Ludwig Wittgenstein, Bertrand Russell and G.E. Moore. And there’s this delightful passage about Russell on page 426:

Miss Marmer was not the first teacher whom Russell had slept with, not by a long shot. Among his staff, Russell was notorious for making quick and startlingly frank advances to the new teachers. Successful advances, too: it was a point of considerable pride to him that, with the exception of two or three women (who had left the school soon after), all had readily — and, he thought, happily — accepted his attentions.

This is delicious.

Please don’t misunderstand me. I am even more appalled by his behavior than you are but, frankly, and strictly between you and me, this is definitely on the QT, hush hush and strictly off the record, but there’s nothing more erotic to me than the use of power to get sex (not that I am anything less than 100% morally opposed to this and I devote every second of my life, except for when I’m earning a living, to fighting this iniquity).

Oh hell, I know it’s wrong, but let’s get our freak on. REO Speedwagon says so:

I can’t fight this feeling any longer.
And yet I’m still afraid to let it flow.
What started out as friendship,
Has grown stronger.
I only wish I had the strength to let it show.

I tell myself that I can’t hold OUT forever.
I said there is no reason for my fear.
Cause I feel so secure when we’re together.
You give my life direction,
You make everything so clear.

And even as I WANDER,
I’m keeping you in sight.
You’re a candle in the window,
On a cold, dark winter’s night.
And I’m getting closer than I ever THOUGHT I MIGHT.

And I can’t fight this feeling anymore.
I’ve forgotten what I started fighting for.
It’s time to bring this ship into the shore,
And throw away the oars, forever.

Cause I can’t fight this feeling anymore.
I’ve forgotten what I started fighting for.
And if I have to crawl upon the floor,
Come crashing through your door,
Baby, I can’t fight this feeling anymore.

My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you.
I’ve been running round in circles in my mind.
And it always seems that I’m following you, girl,
Cause you take me to the places,
That alone I’d never find.

Sometimes I have trouble reconciling my rock music with my religion. And even as I wander, I’m keeping you in sight. You’re a candle in the wind, On a cold, dark winter’s night.

I need to return to the purity of British hymns and strive to build Jerusalem in Pico-Robertson’s green and pleasant land.

A Leader At LA County Of Employment Discrimination Impregnates Employee

A source writes:

The number two [Marcus Castro] at the Los Angeles County office of employment discrimination has impregnated an employee of his [Destiny Hoffman, the blonde on the left with Bryce C. Campbell, Heather Freedman and Christian Keiber at the 7th Annual Filmmakers Alliance Vision Award Presentation on August 18, 2004 and here she is with Heather Freedman and Christian Keiber]. He tried to get her promoted but one of our employees complained becaue that was wrong.  She was transfered to risk management.  All this was done before her being pregnant was known.  He is being investigated by the county but it will all be swept under the rug.  He is hispanic and she is white and blonde.  He is separated from his wife.  Many employees in our office or angry because she is gettting treated different and better.  He is just like the mayor and it is disrespectful for somone being in his position.

How is this guy supposed to prevent sex harasment and discrimination do it and everyone looks away.

How can Destiny live in Beverly Hills and drive a corvette and Hummer working for  the county? How did she get a fast transfer to risk management? There are people in affirmative action who should get promotion but Destiny is getting special [treatment]. [Does] Destiny want money?

The office has many problems. They hide many people working in the wrong jobs. If light was put on [it would show that] they have many problems. The top boss covers up the problems and lies to his bosses. We are all scared so we don’t say things. They should be investigated like they investigate others. We ask superviser Gloria Molina for help but nothing happens. Maybe because Castro is hispanic?

Marcus Castro, the number two guy at the department of affirmative action, did not respond to my email inquiry. His boss, Dennis Tafoya, did not respond either.

Intellectuals

I just read Paul Johnson‘s book Intellectuals for the third time. It was jolly good.

I just finished Johnson’s book Creators, which I did not enjoy as much but still recommend. On page six, he wrote: "France now has more than 4,000 literary prizes but precious little in the way of literature…"

I spent part of my Sunday morning Googling Paul Johnson.

I found this nasty essay in Salon by Christopher Hitchens:

A decade or so ago, I outed the barking Tory pamphleteer Paul Johnson as an enthusiast or votary of this cult. For evidence, I had no more to go upon than certain suggestive and repetitive elements in his "work."

So it was decidedly invigorating to learn, in the dog days of mid-May, that he had been exposed by his mistress of 11 years, the writer Gloria Stewart, as a spankee:

"Paul loved to be spanked and it was a big part of our relationship. I had to tell him he was a very naughty boy."

A pretty easy task (the second bit, I mean). Johnson has made a career as an especially bilious and persecuting moralizer. His disgraceful book "Intellectuals," a foul-minded assault on the Enlightenment, laid a feverish stress on the private lives of secular and rationalist intellectuals. Rousseau was not only "vain, egotistical and quarrelsome," but he "enjoyed being spanked on his bare bottom." Ibsen "would not expose his sexual organ even for the purpose of medical examination. Was there something wrong with it — or did he think there was?" I don’t need to draw you a picture: With sermonizers like this it’s just a matter of setting one’s watch. Give it just a little time and — presto! We open the tabloids to see their withered haunches bared to the slipper, and the haggard remnants of their Johnsons exposed to the cruel light of day. (Oxford English Dictionary: Johnson. A common surname, used in low slang to designate: a)The penis. b) A man who is kept by a prostitute or prostitutes; a ponce.)

Stewart unmasked Spanker Johnson to the tabloids because she could not bear to read another word of his "family values" tripe in the press. As recently as March, interviewed by Jacob Weisberg for the New York Times Magazine, he had claimed to be an advisor to the late Princess Diana. "Don’t commit adultery," he said, was his "chief advice" to the divine one. When various Tory MPs were found in a trouser-free condition not long ago, Johnson predicted the ruin of the state and said that adultery, especially when committed by those who opposed it in public, should be severely punished.

I found this perceptive 1998 essay in The New York Times Sunday magazine by Jacob Weisberg:

In Britain, Johnson’s guileless name-dropping, his rages about the ”Church of Sodomy,” as he calls the Church of England, and a penchant for self-contradiction have made him a running joke in the press. In the satirical magazine Private Eye, he is referred to as ”Loonybins.” Everyone in London seems to have a Johnson horror story, many of them relating to what one of the English papers refers to as his ”long and barely secret struggle not to succumb to the bottle.” On one occasion, a memorial service for his friend Kingsley Amis, Johnson became so apoplectic at a eulogy given by the leftish journalist Christopher Hitchens that he had to be escorted out. Johnson is said by some to have his temper and his drinking under control these days. His wife, Marigold, recently referred to him as ”far less barmy than he used to be.”

Part of the reason Johnson’s writing is not taken seriously in Britain is that there is so much of it. In the country that invented the term ”hack,” Johnson’s prolificacy is simply astounding. While turning out 1,000-page books every couple of years, he produces a weekly column for The Spectator and regular commentaries for The Daily Mail. On a good day he writes 6,000 words. ”I don’t know how many books I’ve published,” he says. ”I think it’s 34. It may be 35.”

In the United States, and particularly in Washington, where he will appear later this month at the Smithsonian with Gingrich, Johnson has a far statelier reputation. American conservatives know him only as a high-toned historian and intimate of Thatcher’s, not as a gassy columnist horrified by the Spice Girls.

1967: Israel, the War, and the Year That Transformed the Middle East

David Margolick writes in The New York Times:

Segev’s look into the origins of the occupation is invaluable. His research is prodigious, his intelligence obvious, his ability to reconstruct complex chains of events impressive. He writes clearly and confidently and has an eye for the telling, and often witty, detail. But he is the victim of his own eminence — his previous books, on the British Mandate and on the impact of the Holocaust on the Jews of Palestine, among others, have been justly praised — and, surprisingly, of his own parochialism.

The book is way too long, a temptation to which respected writers can sometimes succumb. A timid American editor hasn’t helped. Non-Israelis, even those who read Haaretz daily online, will find “1967” slow going. Indeed, if ever a book reflected the widening chasm between Israel and the Diaspora, it is this one. At times — describing day-to-day life in Israel or the political machinations there — it is far too detailed; do we really need to know that Israelis forsook fresh for frozen meat during the recession of 1967? Similarly, repeated quotations from the war diary of a soldier named Yehoshua Bar-Dayan — and how much he misses his wife, Gila, and young son, Yariv — undoubtedly resonate with Israelis, but will surely be exceedingly tiresome to most everyone else.

Why does Tom Segev get such reviews from non-leftist publications? The man is a leftist ideologue.

Strange Meeting Friday Night About Nikki Finke

A former editor at The Los Angeles Times tells me July 14:

Strange meeting last night between three writers at the LAT and 2 writers at NYT, plus an old editor at LAT.

Message on the QT is being drafted to Amy Pascal, Bernie Weinraub, Ron Meyer and Allan Mayer. If they keep feeding Nikki bullshit, it’s gonna be open season on Nikki’s sources.

No one really blames Nikki for the pain she’s caused. But now the string pullers are gonna have to pay if they keep it up, because no one wants to see Nikki found like [former LA Times gossip columnist] Joyce Haber.. Nikki needs help, not a column at the LA Weekly.

Nikki Finke was profiled in the July 6 edition of Women’s Wear Daily by Jacob Bernstein, the son of Nora Ephron and Carl Bernstein.

According to her website, Finke did not post from July 7 to July 11. She wrote on her website it was because of "personal business."

Kevin Roderick writes July 15 on LAObserved.com: "Searching in the WWD archives finds no mention of the piece. I’m told by a source that the electronic version was pulled after the story ran in the print paper. If true, that would suggest serious questions on the part of the editors. Until I get some clarification from WWD, I’m yanking the excerpts I originally posted here after the jump."

WWD’s publicist Andrea Kaplan told me Monday afternoon, July 16, 2007: "We have no comment."

Nikki Finke: ‘Mike Sitrick, Shame On You…’

Nikki blogs:

I’ve known Mike Sitrick for a long time. He’s a PR maven who prides himself on being a family man. Which is why he should be filled with self-loathing for allowing his firm to promote a torture porn pic like Captivity, much less an even more disgusting premiere party whose selling point was its political incorrectness. (Let me make it perfectly clear: I support talent’s right to make the movie, just not business people profiting from it.) Sure, I received all those inane emails announcing the bash, and I did the right thing: I trashed them. Other journalists fell all over themselves covering the event so as to diss it: really, they’re lemmings hurling themselves off the cliff. There is only one way to stop the business of these torture porn movies: by shaming the people who receive money for releasing them, publicizing them, having anything to do with them.

Villaraigosa Jeered by Crowd at Beckham Event: See the Video

From MediaBistro: "Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa heard boos at today’s media debut of new Galaxy member David Beckham. This was an invited crowd of 5000 season ticket holders, big-wigs, press, and such."

From a report quoted on MayorSam:

The mayor had hoped to get a warm reception from a crowd of fans welcoming soccer superstar David Beckham to the L.A. Galaxy. Villaraigosa has said he wants to ‘focus on his job’ after damaging revelations came out last week that he cheated on his wife of 20 years by having an affair with a local newscaster.

The reception he got here was chilly, to say the least.

When Villaraigosa was introduced to the crowd, they booed. Loudly. The catcalls could be heard on the podium mike. And so you could definitely hear it on the live TV feed that people were watching all over the world.

The mayor tried to connect with the fans, asking them: "Who says L.A. doesn’t love soccer?!"

He was greeted with silence.

Mayor On Leno

Jay Leno said July 12: "Boy, there are a lot of sex scandals in the news this week. It’s unbelievable. Our own mayor here in Los Angeles has admitted to having an affair with a very young, very attractive reporter from the Spanish language network . . . whose job it was to cover him. She was supposed to cover him. Talk about being an embedded reporter."

Mayor’s Trouble Over Or Is It The Eye Of The Storm?

From a post to Mayor Sam:

It is the eye of the storm.

Antonio lied when he stated that he never had any other affairs. We all know this is not true, especially the press. Reporters are just lining up their ducks, calling out a mayor who has lied is a serious issue and the editors are mulling over all the reporter’s facts. There are quite a few other mistresses out there… For starters, that is not Corina in the picture on this mailer – as Matea Gold claimed it was. Mayor Sam, let’s see if your readers can figure out who it is.

HInt: she has something in common with Richard, Martha Reina’s husband at the time of this affair – but it is not Martha.

Here’s another sharp post:

A campaign backer apparently sold Mirthala her Condo at below market value.

I’m sure appointments, promotions of Sabrina Kay’s fashion line, and various other conflicts-of-interest would be of great interest to Rocky and others who would like to advance over Big Love.

Bottom line: Big Love wants to be Gov. There are many other politicians who would like that also. Getting Big Love’s scalp as part of anti-corruption would be a way of both blocking Big Love and proving to voters that said pol is tough on corruption and deserving of votes.

Screwing around on your wife and screwing your buddies wives is not illegal (though despicable). Conflict of interest violations for your mistresses CAN potentially be illegal depending on the law.
