What Does a Girl Have To Do These Days To Get Dumped?

Tamara Shayne Kagel blogs:

Here’s the scenario. You meet someone you think you could like. You’ve hung out three or four times, maybe a few dates and then meeting up with his friends for drinks. You start to think you do like him. You start opening up, talking about your family or dreams or whatever it is you think makes you special. He does the same. In fact, when you meet his friends, they already know about you. You think to yourself, ok this could be something. Then….

NOTHING. He doesn’t call back. That’s how he ends it. He doesn’t think he owes you a phone call or an explanation or even a text to say “no thanks, I’m not interested anymore.” He just doesn’t respond. In the last year, so many of my friends have had little flings end like this. What does it take for a guy to dump you properly? Now, I know girls do this too, but it seems to me that by and large, this is mainly perpetrated by men. I’ve talked many times with other girls about how to have these awkward conversations so I know some of them are doing it. I also know men want to say that it’s just easier for women to communicate and that this is how men deal with stuff. But that’s just total malarkey. I’m guessing some men are either to selfish to care or more likely just cowards.

If a man does not call you back, he has told you clearly that you are dumped. He has told you just as clearly that you are dumped as if he called you up and said, “You are dumped.”

Men don’t want to talk about the relationship as much as women want to talk about it. That doesn’t mean they don’t care. Unless you are having sex with the guy, he doesn’t think you love him anyway.

That is the primary way that a man understands his woman loves him — she gives him her body. Not through words and not through food and not through gifts.

There is only one circumstance in which I am interested in talking about our relationship — and that is if I am doing intimate things with you. Other than that, I don’t want to discuss the relationship. I don’t want to worry about your birthday and the like.

If the woman stops doing intimate things with me, I don’t want to discuss it. I just want to move on.

I don’t think men in these situations are less likely to return calls. I’ve gone out with women who just stopped returning my call.

I hated it. I thought it was cowardly.

More annoyingly, I’ve been stood up on a date a few times. I am sure a lot more women do this than men do. Men still have the burden of asking women out far more often than women ask men out.

On Nov. 22, Tamara blogged about her difficulty saying no when a guy asks for her phone number.

So Tamara seems to have the same difficulty with certain awkward male-female dating conversations that she bemoans many guys have when they don’t explicitly spell out to a girl that it is over.

I recall a fascinating discussion of Jewish law by Rabbi Michael Broyde about dashed expectations in dating. Can a woman take a man to a Beit Din if she believes he lead her on? I think that was the topic.

The rabbi said no. He used the analogy of a taxi. If you call for a taxi, and then another taxi shows up earlier, you take that taxi. That’s just how the game works.

So too with dating. If you are stood up on a date, or your expectations aren’t fulfilled, you just suck it up and get back out there because that is how the game works.

If you get into a relationship and then you are cut off without explanation, then you have to question your own judgment of character. What allowed you to get into a relationship with a low-life? What signs were you ignoring?

We need to develop our own differentiation — that is the ability to hold on to ourselves while staying in relationship with those important to us.

When we start dating, we develop ideas about the other person that are rarely rooted in reality (and are more rooted in our early years and how we learned to relate to the opposite sex).

Life rarely goes according to our scenarios. This is painful. A differentiated person holds on to himself and to his integrity while trying to stay in relationship. An undifferentiated person goes to pieces when life doesn’t go according to his expectations.

JEFF EMAILS: This statement is at the heart of the matter. Men are hunters. To some degree, the date is a commodity, like a taxi. Men use women for their needs, status, etc, so if the scent of a better prey comes around, they’re off on the hunt. Women don’t see themselves as commodities, but feel they are building “relationships” and that they are connecting as “soul mates”, etc.

The only scene I know of where this isn’t true is in the yeshivish world. The girls compete, who gets a “guy” from a better yeshivah, a better family, richer, etc. To some degree there is a role reversal, other than money perhaps to a yeshiva guy the wife is his zivug, and he doesn’t play the field or hunt like everyone else.

Orthodox Couple Sues For Sheitel Damage

Frum couple sues on people court for shaitel damage, Total Chillul Hashem? You be the judge.

In a daytime TV show called The Peoples Court a Jewish couple, identified only as Heidi and Mendi, appeared before Judge Marilyn Milian in a case where they claimed a laundry and dry cleaning service washed Heidi’s $3000 wig in the wash and ruined it. But it is the cases finale that is troubling, and embarrassing.

The episode aired on national TV last week, on Thursday December 2nd 2010, and was recorded on November 6th 2010.

John says: I think the interesting part is the way the commenters are going nuts on the frum blog sites. Numbers exceeding rubashkin or madoff.

Greg Leake emails: Hi Luke,

I just enjoyed your amusing YouTube of the People’s Court. I’m hoping that you are someone who will give me some sense of how this couple will be received when they show up at their shul.

I heard another amusing comment the other day on Michael Medved’s show. I thought that surely this comment must be of the most cutting sort for one Jew to make about another.

The discussion centered around Rabbi Michael Lerner and Tikkun magazine. Medved said (I won’t put it in quotes, as I might be slightly off): Michael Lerner is the kind of rabbi who gives anti-Semitism a good name.

Whoa!

Incidentally, I’ve read some of your positive statements about the Alexander Technique. Oddly enough, one of the things that has been of greatest assistance to me in the area of social integration was learning to box. Naturally I would not recommend it to everyone, but I must confess that boxing has done more to enhance my feeling of self-sufficiency and social ease than any of the other several things that may have contributed.

The Housing Boom And Bust

Should We Root For Michael Vick?

JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR writes for the Dallas Morning News:

Since the Cowboys aren’t going to play in the Super Bowl, you might as well root for Vick and the first-place Philadelphia Eagles to represent the NFC. They get an opportunity to continue their push toward the NFC East title with a win over the Cowboys on Sunday.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell certainly wouldn’t mind. You shouldn’t either.

Think about the platform Vick would have to talk about how he used the dumb decisions and stupid mistakes he made to turn his life around. Think about the impact he might have on some kid somewhere making equally dumb decisions and equally stupid mistakes.

Think about the example he can be for parents of troubled kids.

“Here’s a guy who experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows,” they can say, “and figured out a way to get back to the top.”

Vick, like he used to be, is once again in position to be a role model and an example for others to follow because he’s the league’s MVP as we enter the final month of the season.

Whether you believe athletes should be role models is irrelevant. Kids wear Vick’s jersey. They emulate him on the football field.

I agree that Michael Vick is a role model. We are all role models to somebody. But should we as a nation root for Michael Vick?

Well, what is great about Michael Vick? He’s turned into a good quarterback for the first time in his career after missing two seasons of football to serve time in prison for dog fighting. Vick now says the right things about dog fighting being wrong, but big deal, he has to say those things. I don’t see anything inspiring about his life outside of football. And great play on the football field doesn’t have much significance outside of it.

Do you think fewer young black men are going to go to prison if Michael Vick wins the Super Bowl?

I agree with Taylor that dog fighting is far less significant than killing somebody (as two current football players have done — Leonard Little and Donte’ Stallworth).

P.S. I’ve noticed that blacks and whites respond to Michael Vick in different ways.

First of all, blacks and whites seem to have a different attitude to dogs. For whites, dogs are often part of the family. For blacks, they are pets. They’re not family. Therefore, what Vick did was not so bad.

Second. I’m noticing blacks on TV (such as the two Stus on First Take) say that the NFL has to take measures to protect Michael Vick the same way the league protects Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

I watched the Dallas-Philadelphia game last night. Michael Vick was repeatedly hit hard but it struck me as fair. I’m not outraged about it. I’m noticing whites having a similar opinion to mine.

Israel’s Housing Prices Spike

Why does real estate increase in price when Jews move into a neighborhood?

Israel has ridden out the great recession better than almost any Western country.

The Los Angeles Times reports:

The surge is an unexpected side effect of the international financial meltdown, which continues to shrink real estate prices in the United States and other nations. Responding to the crisis in 2009, the Bank of Israel slashed its benchmark interest rate to 0.5%. When mortgage rates followed suit, dipping to 2%, home sales exploded, particularly among investors and foreigners searching for more attractive returns than they could earn on bank deposits.

Rising demand pushed the average home price to about $250,000. In Tel Aviv, prices have risen 46% since the end of 2008 to an average of nearly $600,000 for a three-bedroom home. Jerusalem is up 15% this year to an average price of about $415,000.

That’s good news for homeowners, who watched property values fall in the 1990s and again during the 2001-03 Palestinian uprising and the 2006 Lebanon war. On average over the last decade, Israeli home prices have risen about 3% a year.

But the recent surge in prices has made life difficult for many Israelis, especially first-time homebuyers.

It’s Amusing To See Obama Play The Centrist

Barack Obama is the most left-wing president in American history. That’s why it does not matter if he is a Christian or a Muslim or a Scientologist. The man’s religion is leftism. That’s where his values come from. There’s nothing distinctively Christian about his values.

I saw Bill Clinton on TV Friday afternoon. He looked so happy to be back in the spotlight! The press loved it too.

Mickey Kaus blogs:

WaPo‘s Greg Sargent notes that Obama isn’t really “triangulating”—he isn’t “arguing that the left is wrong on policy substance, as Bill Clinton did.” Right. That’s the problem!

Or, rather, two problems. 1) Since Obama’s not in the center because he believes in being in the center, but because he has had to compromise, he’s congenitally vulnerable to the charge of wimpiness, at least from Democrats. “He agrees with us,” they can think—”but did he get all he could? Did John Kyl take him to the cleaners?” What under triangulation is a policy dispute becomes a manhood issue. 2) Meanwhile, because Obama never tells the left it’s wrong on policy, the larger public doesn’t get a very clear idea of where he’d want to take the country, given the chance. He’s managed to piss off the base without necessarily winning over the middle. Many mainstream voters come to suspect, not without reason, that he’s a left-winger at heart, constrained only by reality—especially political reality. They must be very happy they added some new constraints on November 2.

Triangulation is better than what Obama is doing. But the light bulb has to want to triangulate. …

Backfill: I seem to have written a crappier version of Peggy Noonan’s most recent column.

If you suggest, as the president did, that the seemingly moderate plan you agreed to is awful and you’ll try to rescind it in two years, you won’t leave the center thinking, “He’s our guy!” You’ll leave them thinking, “Note to self: Remove Obama in two years.”

This Week’s Torah Portion

I discuss the weekly Torah portion with Rabbi Rabbs every Monday at 7pm PST on my live cam and YouTube.

This week’s parsha is Vayechi (Genesis 47:28-50:26).

* This week’s parsha contains many verses on the death of Jacob. The Torah dispatched Avraham in four verses and Isaac in two. So why does Jacob need so many? Because he is the only patriarch to die outside of the land of Israel. When you are not living in a Jewish community, life becomes much more complicated. Jacob is terribly concerned with his burial arrangements, for instance, a matter that would be self-evident and simple if he spent his final days in Israel.

When I shop at Ralphs, I have to pay much more attention than when I shop at Glatt Mart, where everything is kosher. I hear it is hard to find anything kosher at McDonalds or a swinger’s party. I’ve dated girls where they practically nail 99 theses to your door before you can do anything fun.

* Jews are back to their old tricks. Jacob requires Joseph to put his hand under his thigh and swear. (Gen. 47:29) If Rabbi Rabbs ever tries this with me, I swear I will punch him, even if he just wants assurance that I will bury him in the Holy Land accompanied by 72 virgins to entertain him on his long trip to paradise.

* Seventeen years after moving to Egypt, Jacob still does not know his grandsons. (Gen. 48:8)

* Did it hurt Menashe’s self-esteem when Jacob puts Ephraim before him?

* Gen. 48:16 Nobody prays to angels in the Hebrew Bible. God alone should be prayed to. I gotta remember this on dates and stop whining and begging and praying. Oh, please, I’m gonna die without your love.

* Sing “We are Family” by Sister Sledge.

* Pretty cool how Jacob can give his final speech in poetic form. Not many people on their deathbed are able to stay in perfect iambic pentameter.

* Are Jacob’s statements on tribal history predictions or retrojections?

* If God wrote the Torah, why isn’t it in first-person? As in, When I created the Heavens and the Earth. God speaks a lot in first person in the Torah but the Torah is not narrated by God.

* Does Rabbs believe what the Artscroll commentary says on Gen. 47:28-31: “Those who are buried outside of Eretz Yisrael will not come to life at the Resurrection until they roll through the earth to Eretz Yisrael.”

* Gen. 49:1 Jacob tells his sons what will happen at the End of Days. What the hell? This sounds Christian.

* Where would Rabbs like me to stick him when he croaks? I hope there will be some helpful gentlemen walking by on that fearful day making the cheery refrain, “Bring out your dead!”

* When my mom was carrying me, she was seized with a premonition that I would grow up to do something wonderful for God.

My parents told me this story many times to encourage me, but when I became an adult, they feared they had created a narcissist.

* Isaac was monogamous. Was he the happier for it? Abraham and Jacob had lots of wives and concubines, which, on one level, sound very tempting. I fear that if I had many wives and concubines, I would not be as spiritual as I am today.

* It is a shame we don’t use the “strong-boned ass” compliment more today (as the Torah does for Issachar in Gen. 49:14).

* Gen. 49:18. When Jacob prays for Dan’s salvation, does he mean Samson or does he mean that he longs for Dan to be in heaven with him?

* Jacob appears to have died without knowing what the brothers did to Joseph because he does not mention it in his final speech. I suspect Jacob did not want to know what happened to Joseph.

* Midrash says Joseph, after Jacob’s death, stopped inviting his brothers over for Shabbat dinner because of protocol concerns. (Artscroll, Pg. 287)

* Jews are a merciful people.

* Why were Joseph’s brothers were very nervous about what Joseph would do to them when Jacob died? Did they have a guilty conscience? Notice how they sent Joseph a message and said, “Your father”, not “our father”. Did they make up Jacob’s message?

* Do you think of God more as the king of kings or as the queen of queens?

* Do Jews have a mission to humanity? If so, what is it? Can Jews have a mission to humanity and still live separately?

* There is no constellation of the stars that determines human fate. You are free to do good or to do bad. You can’t say your environment caused your moral downfall.

* Why don’t Jews embalm? The body is supposed to return to the earth. Judaism is intense about acknowledging death. We don’t talk much about the body continuing its journey to the next world.

* Where was Rabbs during the summer of ’69? Were those the best years of his life? Playing that old six-string, young and restless, needing to unwind. I guess nothing can last forever.

* What is your favorite boy band? Mine is Libera. They have voices like angels.

* I enjoy listening to Christian hymns. Is that a sin? What if I listen to them and sing them aloud while rolling around my hovel with a married shiksa who doesn’t believe in God?

* Would you rather be alone on a desert island with Oprah or with me?

* How does Rabbs feel about trading land for peace?

* Will 2011 be the year that Jennifer Aniston finally finds lasting love?

* Why can’t one of us excel in commerce? Why do both of us have to be Torah scholars? Why can’t we be like Issachar (who excelled in Torah learning) and Zebulun (who excelled in commerce)?

* How much value do you put on yichus (ancestry)? America is a country of immigrants and Americans seem to care less about ancestry than any other people aside from Jews. Jews and Americans are the two peoples, the two nations, based on ideas. If Japan and Germany had won WWII, the two most powerful countries on earth would have been obsessed with blood aka ancestry.

* The different tribes seem to have different missions. Could this also be true of the different races and religions in the world?

* Artscroll: “The more materially lustful a person is, the less he can bear to part from this life to the holier one awaiting him.” (Gen. 49:29-32) Pg. 284

* What do you think people will say about you at your funeral? Do you think about this?

*

* Rabbi Rabbs posts: I asked why isn’t the messiah here already? In response:

On the first night of Chanukah, my true love said to me, if liberal Jews would embrace Judaism instead of Islam, the messiah might be here already.

On the second night of Chanukah, my true love said to me, if Republican Jews would embrace Torah and Mitzvahs instead of Tea Party rallies and Glenn Beck, the messiah might be here already.

On the third night of Chanukah, my true love said to me, if Aish HaTorah and Modern Orthodox Jews would believe in G-d and Torah instead of in evolution and dinosaurs, the messiah might be here already.

On the fourth night of Chanukah, my true love said to me, if Chabad members would worship Judaism instead of worshiping a dead man, the messiah might be here already.

On the fifth night of Chanukah, my true love said to me, if Zionist Jews would worship Judaism instead of worshiping Bolshevik nationalism, the messiah might be here already.

On the sixth night of Chanukah, my true love said to me, if Reform and Conservative congregations would worship Judaism instead of worshipping Darfur, intermarriage, and lesbian rabbis, the messiah might be here already

On the seventh night of Chanukah, my true love said to me, if Rabbi Rabbs and Levi Ford would worship Judaism instead of worshipping hot Persian chicks and Monday Night Football, the messiah might be here already.

And, finally,

On the eighth night of Chanukah, my true love said to me, Jews should stop doing rap, and stop trying to act like schvartzers. It may have no effect on the messiah being here or not, but “Jewish” rap is just freaking embarrassing and needs to stop.

What A Real Estate Agent Can Not Tell You

There is a lot of info that I would like from a realtor before buying a home.

For instance, I’d like to know about crime statistics. I’d like to know about the quality of schools. I’d like to know about the racial and religious make-up of the community. What are average incomes? What is the environment like? Are there any concerns?

Well, all these perfectly valid questions can not be answered by a realtor. It is against the law. What law? The Fair Housing Act.

How could such a beautiful sounding act be so restrictive of free speech? This is crazy. This is why I’m libertarian-conservative.

I’d prefer the government butt out of these discussions.

It is a good thing that National Review columnist John Derbyshire is not a realtor.

Here are some depressing details from AOL:

Household income: Wondering if a neighborhood is considered upscale? Don’t bother asking your agent. Klein says he can’t discuss economic class with prospective buyers.

But it’s relatively easy to find demographic information online, including average household income for a particular area. At Neighborhood Scout, for example, you can get a description of a neighborhood’s “look, feel and character” that includes information about residents’ age, income level, ethnicity and other factors.

Schools: As with income level, sharing information about schools “might be perceived as steering someone into a certain neighborhood,” says Klein. “However, as a Realtor I can direct people to sources of information about education in that area.”

Here, too, the web offers prospective home buyers a wealth of information. Buyers can find useful school statistics, including enrollment, class size, and reading and math scores, at sites like School Matters and Great Schools.

Religion: The religious makeup of a neighborhood is another topic that’s off-limits for real estate agents to discuss. If a buyer wants to find out about active religious communities in a particular neighborhood, Klein directs them to local houses of worship for information.

Crime statistics: Surely an agent can answer questions about local crime statistics, right? That’s pretty public information. But it turns out that even this data is considered a sensitive topic under the Fair Housing Act.

Once again, buyers have to do their own research to find out if a certain neighborhood is considered safe. Homebuyers can find crime statistics online, including where sex offenders live, by logging onto Family Watchdog.

Israeli Racism

In follow-up to this blog post, I want you to read this by Steven Plaut on JewishPress.com:

Allow us to introduce you to young Kochav Segal Halevi. The 26-year-old Israeli is receiving death threats. In fact, he had to go into hiding. His offense? He purchased an apartment in the Arab town of Ibillin, not far from Haifa.

The Arabs there do not like the idea of their town being polluted by the presence of a Jew. I mean, one Jew and there goes the neighborhood. Arabs who sell property to Jews have similarly been threatened and attacked. And of course the moderates from the Palestinian Authority routinely torture and execute Arabs who sell to Jews.

I mention this because the leftist media in Israel and in the world are, as usual, up in arms over supposed Israeli Jewish racism against Arabs.

Yes, there are Jewish closed communities in Israel, some of them religiously observant, where one must be accepted by admissions committees, and they tend to refuse membership to Arabs “to preserve the character of the community.” (In religious communities, non-religious Jews get barred as well. Other communities, including kibbutzim, have age and marital status restrictions.)

But the reality is that, by and large, Israeli Arabs can live in just about any Jewish area in the country, while Jews cannot move into any Arab town, village or neighborhood. Jews cannot move into the Arab areas because they will be murdered if they move there. Every Israeli understands these unwritten “rules of the game.”

In fact, Jews often risk their lives just passing through Arab areas, as a group of four Jewish Hebrew University students discovered during a recent weekend when they were almost lynched after making a wrong turn into an Arab neighborhood next to the campus.

Arabs from (Arab) Nazareth routinely buy housing in (Jewish) Upper Nazareth, but Jews from Upper Nazareth never purchase property in (Arab) Nazareth, knowing they’d be killed if they did. During the pogroms by Galilee Arabs in the summer of 2000, Arabs invaded Upper Nazareth and attacked Jews there. The Jews of Upper Nazareth did not attack Arabs in Nazareth. So who are the racists there?

More generally, the new party line of the radical Left is that, yes, Arabs must be permitted to live anywhere they want among Israeli Jews, but no, Jews must be prevented from ever moving into areas the Left regards as “Arab” – i.e., places where Jews do not belong. Hebrew University’s tenured leftists and their jihadi fellow travelers have been leading the marches in Jerusalem to prevent Jews from moving into neighborhoods inside Jerusalem regarded by the Left as areas where Jews are regarded as “intruders.”

Many parts of the Galilee today have Arab majorities. The Jews in Carmiel and Safed, to name but two towns, feel they are under demographic siege. Much of the local opposition to Arabs moving into those towns is based on the fact that violence and hostilities have broken out whenever significant numbers of Arabs moved to neighborhoods there. After all, we are in the middle of a war and the local Arabs, by and large, openly identify with the country’s enemies.

The anti-Israel Left sees “racism” in calls to restrict Arabs moving into the Jewish towns of the Galilee, but has never expressed an iota of criticism about the violent threats that prevent Jews from moving into Arab areas. Those folks have had nothing to say about the plight of young Halevi. That’s not racism, you see.

The Left also is completely silent about the violent attacks by Arabs against right-wing Jewish protesters who hold marches in some Arab towns, like Umm al-Fahm, the seat of the Israeli Arab pro-jihad Islamofascist movement (a movement that openly identifies with the Hamas). After all, those Jewish marchers are violating the anti-Jewish sensitivities of the local Arabs.

Of course, when gay pride marches are held in Jewish religious neighborhoods of Jerusalem (but never, mind you, in Muslim neighborhoods there), no leftist thinks those marchers should be expected to respect local sensitivities.

It is true that threats against Jews, which effectively prevent Jews from living in Arab areas in the Galilee and Negev and elsewhere, are not formal and officially proclaimed. Nevertheless, everyone in the country understands the threats of violence that operate against Jews seeking to live in Arab areas.

Again, the leftist knee-jerk response to Jewish “invasions” of areas where “Jews do not belong” has been to demand that the Jews be evicted. Arabs routinely move into many Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa and there have been virtually no incidents of violence against them. Meanwhile the Left keeps insisting that any peace deal with the Palestinian Authority must involve the complete eviction of all Jews living in the West Bank. Arabs will be free to live in Israel after any such “peace deal,” but Jews must be prohibited from living in what could become “Palestinian areas.”

So who are the real racists? Where is the real apartheid?
