WP: Asian Americans speak out against a decades-old ‘model minority’ myth

Yanan Wang writes in the Washington Post:

A column published over a week ago in the New York Times began with what the writer calls “an awkward question”: “Why are Asian Americans so successful in America?”

Nicholas Kristof is no stranger to controversy, and the framing of his first sentence indicates that he knew he would be wading straight into it with a piece titled “The Asian Advantage.” But perhaps even Kristof did not expect the magnitude of the pushback from the Asian American community to be so great that it would prompt him to post a follow-up on Facebook this Saturday.

“My column last weekend on Asian-Americans sparked lots of conversation and criticism,” he wrote, addressing at length the various objections to and interpretations of the column. “Thanks for joining the conversation, whether you were patting me on the back or whacking me over the head.”

While many Asian American commenters said they appreciated Kristof’s attempt to clarify his points, the post likely befuddled others. What could be objectionable, after all, about a column representing as fact the achievements of Asian immigrants in America?

But to many Asian Americans, the column’s opening gambit isn’t just awkward. It’s offensive — and dangerous.

Comments at WP:

* Yanan, you’re posing strawperson arguments. Which conservatives have said “ALL” Asians of color are successful? Which have said all Asians of color are “IMMUNE” from white privilege? A few idiots, and now that’s the dumb argument you’re going to easily topple?

And now to criticize the progressives: they LOVE to trot out the Hmong (and a few other groups as Cambodians) who admittedly do poorly. But it’s funny to see the progressives virtually CELEBRATING the Hmong so that they can claim the evil racist policies of the privileged boring white dominant people are alive and well . Unfortunately for progressives, these Asians of color represent a very small part of the dominant Han, Korean, and Indian students of color who, e.g., dominate STEM majors. Notice what I said: they dominate. I didn’t say ALL stem majors are Asians of color. Some Asians of color even major in education (mostly a joke among other majors). And some Asians will be working in the restaurant or the factory for the rest of their lives. But an amazing number are becoming physicians, computer scientists, lawyers, businesspeople, et al., BOTH women and men.

So Yanan, please stop with the supposed strawperson arguments by calling out the conservatives who claim ALL Asians of color are successful and recognizing not all make such a stupid claim, and please call out the progressives who LOVE to use the relatively small groups of Hmong, Cambodians, etc. as the CELEBRATED example of Asians of color doing poorly in hopelessly racist AmeriKKKa, while there might be other factors (which hopefully can be overcome) to account for the anomaly occurring with these small groups of Asians of color.

* Good God, this is the fourth Post article of this morning that is nothing but standard Post race-baiting…I mean RACE-BLEATING. We’ve already been treated to a middle school that canceled its student officer election because too many white kids won; former NBA player Chris Webber teaching a Master’s-level course on Sports and Race at Wake Forest; and comedian Chris Rock making a “joke” insinuating that RGIII was benched because he was black.

Old newspaper philosophy was “If it bleeds, it leads!” Now it is “If it’s Race, Make it a Headline – Post-Haste!”

* I see these “We’re not the model minority you think we are” articles pop up occasionally, usually written by some Asian Democrat apologist. Yes, we get it that not ALL Asians are smart and successful, but statistically speaking (and statistics don’t lie), Asians outperform all other ethnic groups when it comes to graduation rates,out-of-wedlock pregnancy rates and incarceration rates. Look at the student populations of UCLA and USC and any number of other universities and it’s quite obvious they’re doing something right. We understand that Asians, who mostly vote Democrat, kind of spoil the Democratic agenda that minorities can’t get a fair shot in America, but it is what it is. Take a compliment.

* A genetic disposition towards intelligence combined with a culture of intact families and respect for academics and work. How could they not succeed?

Prejudices are another word for experience.

* Sorry Asian-American whiny people, If you really want white Americans to think less of you it will take a lot more than a few posers in academia and the media shouting out their grievances about “orientalism” or whatever else they picked up in America Sucks 101. Nope, you’ll really have to up your game and do a lot worse in things like divorce, children out of wedlock, incarceration, etc. Oh, and you’ll have to tell your younger siblings and other relations to stop studying and drive down those GPAs and standardized test scores! Until then, we in white America aren’t even going think about coming up with any new racial slurs to apply to you.

* But Asians in America ARE smarter than average (excluding Cambodians and Laotians).

Indians, Chinese, and Filipinos are far more likely to immigrate to the US for their skills as MDs, nurses, STEM graduate students, computer programmers, entrepreneurship, and engineers; when compared to, say Mexicans and Central Americans who are here to work in the fields and clean our bathrooms.

It is not just work ethic, intelligence is mostly inherited and work ethic is inherited in part (there is a test that can be administered to 4 year olds that is highly correlated with adult success). European Americans even after all of these generations are also a cut above those that stayed behind. Blacks descended from slaves were inversely selected. Cambodia killed all their smart people, which is why the refugees are near the bottom of the list in success in the US.

Asians are stereotyped as highly intelligent because so many of them are. Blacks are stereotyped as lazy, welfare criminals because so many of them are. If they don’t like it, they should convince their fellow Asians to dumb down or their fellow blacks to book it up and get a job.

* Asians don’t fall for this PC trap. You are a model minority. People who process refugees from all over the world tell me that Asians are the most obedient, rule following people while Africans and Middle East people act the most entitled, and always complain about how everything is not up to their expectations. Unfortunately, these are the people who become a burden on our societies. Not so much Asians. They are exceptional and how funny they work from Wall Street to Silicon Valley and yet I have never heard a single one of them complain about racism. In fact they are extremely well settled and integrated into American society while maintaining their unique identities. Also, I am not sure why Black Lives Matter people talk about brown people. I have never seen any brown people complain like these radical, lazy, entitled , people who constitute Black Lives Matter. Look what happened to Venezuela after the radical left took over that country? Never, ever let them do it here. They are immature with ego and narcissistic tendencies who like to constantly find victims because that gives them an adrenal rush and makes their useless existence worthwhile.

* Oh please, a minority of who went to study some useless degree in identity politics or cultural studies took to twitter to criticize Kristoff doesn’t negate the fact that Asians are model minorities. Also, the majority of who are extremely successful don’t have time to take to twitter and criticize an article. In Germany the Vietnamese community which came during the war and then faced incredible backlash by the Germans has now go on to become the most successful minority community in Germany even surpassing Germans. That says a lot about Asian community. You don’t like because then it negates the idea that everyone else is responsible for your fate and destiny.

* So Kristof is a racist. We kinda knew that already didn’t we?

But kudos to the ostensibly Asian reporter for highlighting Asian grievances without acknowledging the biggest one of all; enthusiastic state-sponsored anti-Asian discrimination in university admissions.

* The reason the liberal intelligentsia is so sensitive about this point is that it has the potential to blow a massive, catastrophic hole in their central argument about “white privilege.”

South Asians are brown-skinned. In some instances, really brown skinned, as in darker than African-Americans. Although many immigrants from there are doctors and lawyers and engineers, many others are cab drivers and gas station attendants. Considering how little time they have had in this country, their success in not only medicine/engineering but also law, journalism, business is astounding. To deny that fact is ludicrous.

It gives liberals the willies.

* Well, all I know is that Asian-Americans don’t riot and loot, don’t shoot each other daily in the ghettos, and don’t have Asian Lives Matter militancy, in America, like another race.

WP: S.F. middle school delays election results because winners not diverse enough

Washington Post:

When Everett held its election three days later, its principal promptly refused to release the results, saying she was concerned that the winners were not diverse enough.

While she would ultimately relent and release the results, her decision spurred anger among parents and kids who felt that the principal was putting diversity ahead of democracy. Critics compared her to a dictator who scraps elections when results don’t go her way. It was the middle school equivalent of hanging chads and a near political crisis, only without a Supreme Court to hear the case…

“It’s not okay for a school that is really, really diverse to have the student representatives majority white,” she told the Chronicle. “The easy thing would have been to announce the results and move on. I intentionally did not choose the easy way because this is so important.”

…“I could never have predicted things would get to this point,” she told the Chronicle, adding that she hoped the civics lesson gone wrong could still be “a teachable moment.”

As soon as I read the first few paragraphs of this story, I figured the principal was a woman.

Comments at WP:

* When are the WASPs going to riot about lack of representation in NBA/NFL/MLB?

* A. That things would “get to this point” was obviously predictable to anyone who understood civics and Americans’ love of the democratic process.
B. Yes, this is a teachable moment about how the Left finds democracy to be in the way of its agenda. (Also, how to not make a PC fool of yourself).

* Basically this white liberal woman does not feel that when people of color are given their freedom they are able to act in their best interest and need an intelligent white overseer to correct them when they make a stupid mistake like voting to have white overseers.

* A civics lesson in liberal racism and tyranny. The students had the right to vote only if their vote conformed to the expectations of the principal. Next we will hear that those who voted incorrectly will be required to attend “vote counseling” so they won’t vote contrary to the dictates of school administrators in the future.

LAT: Why Iowa’s graduation rate is so much higher than California’s

Such a mystery. I just can’t figure it out.

From LATimes.com:

It’s hard to know exactly what’s going on with the numbers, Howard said. “We gotta dig deep to figure out what’s at play.”

I went to Wikipedia and looked at Iowa’s racial demographics: “According to the 2010 Census, 91.3% of the population was White (88.7% non-Hispanic white), 2.9% was Black or African American, 0.4% American Indian and Alaska Native, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 1.8% from two or more races. 5.0% of the total population was of Hispanic or Latino origin (they may be of any race).”

Perhaps that has something to do with Iowa’s high graduation rate? White and East Asians tend to graduate from high school, blacks and latinos struggle to graduate from high school.

Right-Wing Grows In Europe

REPORT:

The growing popularity of the far-right Sweden Democrats mirrors a backlash being felt across Europe as the continent reckons with a refugee crisis that has broken all modern records and shows no sign of abating. The impact can be seen in country after country, with far-right parties hammering away at authorities deemed too permissive in allowing those fleeing war and persecution to find a home in Europe.

Anger over the refugee influx is increasingly fueling violence, as it appeared to do over the weekend when two Swedish schools that were being converted into shelters for asylum seekers burned down in what police said were suspected arson attacks. In the German city of Cologne, a leading mayoral candidate and ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel was stabbed in the neck by a man whom authorities said had “anti-foreigner motives.”

Meanwhile, the backlash is already having an effect at the polls. In Austria, the far-right Freedom Party achieved its highest-ever vote share in municipal elections this month while in Switzerland on Sunday the ultraconservative Swiss People’s Party won a clear victory after campaigning against asylum chaos.” In Poland, a nationalist party whose leader has warned that refugees will bring “parasites” and “cholera” to Europe is expected to triumph over the ruling centrists in a vote coming up on Sunday. Merkel’s approval ratings have dropped as Germany has accepted a historic number of refugees. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has only been strengthened as his government has rolled out mile after mile of barbed wire to keep them out.

“In terms of popularity, the real winners of this crisis are almost exclusively on the right,” the Eurasia political consulting group recently concluded in a research note.

Comments at WP:

* How we are handling the Islamist problem is akin to treating cancer by disseminating the tumor cells throughout the body.

* One massive study done on immigrants in 16 European countries shows crime rates at min are 300% in some countries and as much as 500% higher in others than those that were of that country’s ethic background. The highest crime rates for immigrants were in France and Germany at a bit over 500%. And as for sexual crimes the rates climb 400 to 700 percent for first and second generation immigrants in those sixteen countries over those of that country’s ethnic background.

* In this case, the facts are hateful and racist.

Right now, in the “refugee camps”, the Muslims are talking about how best to co-exist with the LGBT communities, and instructing their young men on when a woman says “no”, she means “no”.

* Maybe the so-called “far-right” is just reacting to a huge mistake by the “far-left.” Maybe the people of Sweden (and Germany) are finally realizing how big a mistake Merkel made, a decision in which they had no voice.

* To progressives the far right are people who ask crazy question like:

“So who’s going to pay for this?”
“What’s the impact to our society if we absorb this many people?”
“Are these people willing to assimilate?”

In fact, progressives consider these types of questions as “hate speech”.

* Huh, you think this is bad. Check out the NY Times editorials. Their editorial board is usually too liberal for me. And I’m not a conservative by any stretch of the imagination. They just had one about how sanctuary cities laws should not apply to the laws of the Federal government! I saw maybe 2 comments out of 1,000 agreeing with their editorial board.

* Muslims will rapidly assimilate into Swedish culture.

* Apparently, there are a lot of Swedes unwilling to commit national suicide.

* Every country had a duty to absorb some Islamist casualties.

* It seems that the Muslims pretty universally hate the Jews. Why would any country afford its hospitality to a populace that seeks to spread its hatred of the Jews? Why welcome such a group that does not come to assimilate but to cause dissension among citizens when they realize they have imposers of Sharia within their midst! Canada is now feeling the pressure. Obama’s efforts to bring this same incompatible populace into the USA can only result in chaos!

* I still haven’t heard anyone guesstimate how many refugees can be brought into Sweden, Austria, Germany, Belgium, etc. without changing the culture; when will the WEST no longer resemble the WEST? Does that matter at all to the irrational morons who are all in favor of this?

* The typical liberal take on the problem. The nice left wing, along with the Muslims are welcoming them with open arms, and only nasty right wing racists and fascists are opposed.
Somehow, in this discussion the attacks by Muslims on the Jewish residents has been omitted, especially it was pretty much ignored by the government. Have there also been other problems with the earlier immigrants that are concerning the residents about a larger influx? Not if you read the Washington Post.

* Swedes do not want to one day wake up to the call to prayer blaring from loudspeakers in minarets across the land at the crack of dawn and then five times a day while their church bells are silenced in the name of “cultural sensitivity.”

* WHY is it that Frenchmen and -women, Germans, Swedes, the Swiss, Dutch, and others who wish to *preserve* their unique cultures against a religion whose political and religious scripture requires the forcible conversion of “infidels”–WHY is it that these conscientious Europeans are by definition called “racist”?

Are they not the indigenous (at least for the past five to seven thousand years) inhabitants of their lands? Even in the most turbulent lands, their soon-not-to-be-majority inhabitants have been there for at least 1500 years. Why should everything be handed over to “migrants” who are just looking for handouts? If these “migrants” were true refugees, they would stop at the first free country and kiss the ground.

But no: they want a free this, a free that, and everything free forever, because that’s what the propaganda they believed in-country told them.

* No mention of what is happening in Gothenberg where the Islamic mob has declared a Caliphate. They are demanding Swedish girls cover themselves while gangs of Islamic boys attack Swedish girls at will. They are inscribing Swedes homes with the Arabic symbol for Christians and demanding they convert. Europe, under the leadership of Progressive Liberal Useful Idiots is committing suicide.

Typical one sided reporting of WaPo and the other useful idiots of the MSM.

* One thing that Americans sympathetic to the migrants with their melting pot culture and a population of 320 million people that’s big enough to absorb just about anything have trouble understanding is that there is no such thing as Europe other than as a geographic entity. Europe is many distinct cultures that have existed for hundreds of years, some very small. In the face of this enormous mass migration of Islamic culture that destroys everything that disagrees with it and with its high birth rates, many of those European cultures would completely disappear. Even a large nation like Germany would be fundamentally changed.

How Is Mark Dayton Governor Of MN?

From The New Republic in 2010: Mark Dayton’s place in Washington’s collective memory can be distilled to exactly one moment, on one day: October 12, 2004. That morning, Dayton, a freshman Democratic senator from Minnesota, appeared in front of a line of TV cameras and announced that in the coming weeks the Capitol would likely be the target of a terrorist attack. He knew this, he said, because of classified information he and his Senate colleagues had received, and, as a safety precaution, he was closing his Washington office for the fall recess and sending his staff elsewhere until after the following month’s election.

In the hours that followed, nearly every congressman, Bush administration spokesman, and law enforcement official within earshot of a reporter delivered a unified response, the gist of which was that Mark Dayton was crazy. The Capitol Police and Department of Homeland Security professed to know nothing of any new specific threat. “He’s unnecessarily panicked people across the United States,” D.C. Democratic Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton told The Washington Post.

The facts at the center of the affair are still classified. But fairly or otherwise, the office closure stands as the moment around which an unsparing consensus on Dayton crystallized in Washington, best captured in a 2006 Time article naming him one of America’s five worst senators. The magazine mocked his “erratic behavior,” his tendency to complain about “basic facts of the job,” and his penchant for Yippie-ish legislative stunts like proposing a Department of Peace and Nonviolence. The reporters dubbed him “The Blunderer.”

Four months after he closed down his office, Dayton’s poll numbers had fallen, and he announced that he wouldn’t run for reelection. By his final days in Washington, Dayton had relapsed into alcoholism for the first time in 20 years and sought treatment for depression. Asked by a high school class what grade he would give himself, Dayton—typically honest to the point of self-annihilation—suggested an F.

When I met Dayton recently, on a sticky hot Saturday afternoon in August in the Twin Cities, I asked him if he stood by that grade. “I stand by the grade I gave the whole U.S. Senate—that was never reported,” he replied. “But I give myself an A for effort.” Dayton was shaking the hands of well-wishers in the lobby of a carpenters’ union hall on the east side of St. Paul, where the central committee of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (or DFL, Minnesota’s variant on the Democratic Party) had just endorsed Dayton as the party’s candidate for governor. As of this writing, the man who left the Senate after one term with a 43 percent approval rating stands a narrowly better-than-even chance of being Minnesota’s first Democratic governor in 20 years.

At times like this it’s tempting to armchair-psychoanalyze Minnesotan voters, because in Minnesota there are a lot of times like this. Minnesotans voted for Walter Mondale when 49 other states voted for Ronald Reagan. They voted for Jesse Ventura when 49 states would have voted for almost anyone else. In 2006, adjacent congressional districts in the Minneapolis area simultaneously elected Democrat Keith Ellison, a liberal African American convert to Islam and the first Muslim in Congress, and Republican Michele Bachmann, whose opinions about Islam are—well, you can probably guess. Minnesotans have sent a former comedian to the Senate and a former Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle to the state Supreme Court. The state’s Republicans have been hanging Time’s “erratic” epithet around Dayton’s neck at every available occasion, but it’s hard to imagine a worse misreading of Minnesota’s political temperament. You might as well attack the governor of Texas for being too fond of Stetsons.

Minnesota Governor: “Our Economy Cannot Expand Based on White, B+, Minnesota-born Citizens.”

Comments to Steve Sailer:

* Someone should ask the filthy rich, born-into-wealth, Yale-educated (probably a BA in sociology) faux prole Mark Brandt Dayton, what percent of the populations of his block, his immediate neighborhood, and his ZIP Code Area are drawn from the vibrantly diverse scum that he wants to impose on all those Minnesotans not wealthy enough, as he is, to afford places of refuge from his thoughtless “policies”. OTOH, as Mencken once wrote, democracy is that form of government where the people get exactly what they want — good and hard. Some majority of the citizens of Minnesota elected this sad relic of the ’60s; to office again and again and again. Now both their more innocent fellow citizens and they must pay the full price for their pigheaded stupidity.

* Yes, to be ready for the 21st century, Minnesota needs thousands of Somalians whose education consists of rote memorization of the Koran and instruction in the use and maintenance of an AK-47. Those B+ whites just won’t cut it anymore. I mean, unless they’re gay or transgender.

* Do the Chinese watch the West in wonderment? Do their leaders sit back and laugh at the folly of their competition? If I was China, I wouldn’t do anything to provoke the West. What’s the point? Just wait another generation or two, and the U.S. will be Brazil – and Brazil isn’t going to get in the way of China.

A Dayton marries a Rockefeller and then finds a way to look down on middle-class whites for wanting to keep their communities intact and safe. Classic.

* He is as good a poster child for the open borders crowd as I can imagine. Presbyterian, hating his own roots, super rich and supported by stock market speculation, born with a silver spoon, never employed doing anything productive (nor working with actual diverse human people), and knowing better than the rest of us what’s good for the orderly, productive rank and file of the north. I guess that all fits with the view of humans as fully fungible carbon units, blank slates who can be inscribed with whatever the Mark Daytons of the world wish.

* The Nazi debacle of 1945 has pretty much ruled out an effective “Euro-nationalist” politics in the States for those of European stock, although politics of racial or nationalist solidarity are permitted to others.

* Gotta give the guy credit, he’s engaging in Real Talk and telling his taxpaying constituents where his sympathies lie, and it ain’t with them. It will be interesting to see how Minnesotans react–they’re very politically correct and phlegmatic and Nordic and all that, but everyone has a breaking point.

* There are definite stages to the insanity. First it’s the “we love ethnic food!” stage. Then the “sure there are problems but we were all immigrants once” stage. Then it’s the denial and denunciation stage – wreckers are upsetting the peace and harmony, the immigrants are not at all to blame. Then the “we have no choice, this is the future” stage, where Minnesota appears to be now. Then the move to the suburbs. Finally the move to Portland, before it gets too expensive.

* The thing is, Gov. Dayton, there is no other place for immigration restrictionists to go. Indeed, a certain kind of leftist takes particular pride in finding lily-white states and towns to enrich with vibrancy. Somalis in New England: cat lady achievement unlocked!

If there were some segment of the country currently permitted to preserve itself, I would say, “Let the Nordic suckers of Minnesota do to themselves what their kin in Europe are currently doing.” It’s sad to see mass immigration befall a peaceful, well-governed, high-trust social democracy, but at the end of the day, people should get the govt they deserve.

What I refuse to accept is for the rest of America to get the government that Minnesotans deserve. If mass immigration is to continue, we will have to split the country into a handful of loosely confederated regions with strict internal border controls. Regions that create high-wage economies and livable communities won’t be flooded with outsiders to arbitrage away the increased quality of life that others have created. Regions that doth protest their love for diversity will end up dispossessing only themselves, if (admittedly a big if) they actually mean it and aren’t just status-signaling, self-segregating hypocrites.

I know all this stuff sounds LARPy, but ultimately there is no meaningful self-determination without control over membership in one’s community. If that can’t be achieved at the overall level of the US it must be achieved within some subset of the US.

Of course, ruling-class gentry liberals like Dayton aren’t interested in “live and let live” with other Americans. They know full well there’s nowhere in America that’s safe from people like themselves. Not only do they know it, they get off on that fact.

This is the most despicable thing about Cultural Marxism. I doubt many of us mind if our fellow Americans in liberal strongholds want to indulge their silly SWPL affectations. They, on the other hand, are determined to eliminate their rival tribe as a cultural and political force.

* There is a lot more going on here than economics. There is real hatred and hostility toward the people by the elite and these policies of ethnic cleansing are fueled far more by this than any economic incentive. Does anyone really believe that these replacements are going to improve the economy? No. We have a hostile elite motivated by hate, revenge, and a desire to humiliate us. Things are only going to get worse and a bloody civil war is on the horizon.

* British journalist Rod Luddle once got in trouble for saying, “Somalis are widely admired for their strong work ethic, respect for the law and keen, piercing, intelligence.”

* Terrible winters, humid summers, Somalis everywhere, governor who can barely speak and when he does, insults his own people: Minnesota sounds like a great place.

* Real or imagined (or hyperbolic) Somali dysfunction is not, ought not be, the real issue.

Maintaining a Minnesota firmly rooted in Western Civilization, ethnoculturally, is a wholly goal legitimate in and of itself and needs no apology or “proxy justification”.

The Upper Midwest developed a distinct regional culture, largely rural, based heavily on the Americanization and “Westernization (as in the frontier American West) of Scandinavian and German settlers of the 1800s. This ethnoculture cannot survive if it is swamped by Africans and Asians, to state the obvious.

In other words, even if Somalis were model citizens, we still don’t want them colonizing our country. We wish them luck in their own country.

Memo to GOP: Curb Immigration or Quit

By Sen. Jeff Sessions and Rep. Dave Brat:

America is about to break every known immigration record. And yet you are unlikely to hear a word about it.
The Census Bureau projects that the foreign-born share of the U.S. population will soon eclipse the highest levels ever documented, and will continue surging to new record highs each year to come.
Yet activists and politicians who support unprecedented levels of immigration are never asked to explain how they believe such a policy will affect social stability, community cohesion or political assimilation.
They can simply cry out, “We must pass immigration reform!” without ever explaining what they believe “immigration reform” means.
Immigration reform should mean improvements to immigration policy to benefit Americans. But in Washington, immigration reform has devolved into a euphemism for legislation that opens America’s borders, floods her labor markets and gives corporations the legal right to import new foreign workers to replace their existing employees at lower pay.
Consider the giant special interests clamoring for the passage of the Senate’s 2013 “gang of eight” immigration bill: tech oligarchs represented by Mark Zuckerberg’s FWD.us, open borders groups such as La Raza and the globalist class embodied by the billionaire-run Partnership for a New American Economy.
For these and countless other interest groups who helped write the bill, it delivered spectacularly: the tech giants would receive double the number of low-wage H-1B workers to substitute for Americans. La Raza would receive the further opening of America’s borders (while Democratic politicians gain more political power). And the billionaire lobby would receive the largest supply of visas for new low-skilled immigrants in our history, transferring wealth and bargaining power from workers to their employers.
What would be the effect on schools? On hospitals? On police departments? On labor conditions? On poverty? What would the effect be on millions of past immigrants forced to compete for scarce jobs and meager wages against these new arrivals?
Few seemed to ask, or care.
This is not immigration reform. This is the dissolution of the nation state, of the principle that a government exists to serve its own people.
When stories broke of loyal workers at Southern California Edison and Orlando Disney being forced by executives to train the lower-wage H-1B workers flown in to replace them, our political class could not be budged to even the slightest action. No tears were spilled by a cultural elite who would march on Washington to get drivers’ licenses for illegal immigrants.
Instead of pleas for justice on behalf of these discarded workers, industry and lawmakers pushed for legislation that would accelerate their replacement. They demanded passage of the Immigration Innovation Act — a bill to triple the number of foreign tech workers brought in as lower-wage substitutes.
The narrative could not be allowed to depart from the approved script.
Here are the forbidden facts which have been edited out:
The great and broadly-shared middle-class growth that occurred in the 20th century took place during a period of low immigration.
Following the 1880-1920 immigration wave, which saw the foreign-born population double from 7 million to 14 million people, Congress passed a law to reduce future immigration. Between 1920 and 1970, America’s foreign-born population shrank from 14 million to 9.6 million. For half a century, the number of immigrants declined both in total number and as a share of the population.
This period witnessed rapid wage growth.
According to the Congressional Research Service, from 1945 to 1970 — as the foreign-born population fell — the bottom 90 percent of wage earners saw an 82.5 percent increase in their wages. During this time, millions of prior immigrants were able to climb out of the tenements and into the middle class.
In 1965, Congress passed a new immigration law which helped produce an unprecedented wave of low-skilled immigration. The foreign-born population more than quadrupled, from fewer than 10 million in 1970 to more than 42 million today. In 1970, fewer than 1 in 21 residents were foreign-born, today it is approaching 1 in 7. In cities such as Los Angeles and New York, almost 4 in 10 current residents were born in another country. One-fifth of our residents now speak a language other than English at home. One-quarter of our residents is now either an immigrant or born to immigrant parents.
This ongoing immigration wave continues during a time when workers are being replaced with automation, when record numbers are living on welfare and when manufacturing plants are closing their doors. All of this has combined to help create an immense wage-compressing surplus of labor: 66 million working-age residents are not working. Real average hourly earnings are lower now than they were in 1973.
The Congressional Research Service reports that during the 43 years between 1970 and 2013 — when the foreign-born population grew 325 percent — incomes for the bottom 90 percent of earners fell nearly 8 percent.
And yet, on autopilot, each year the U.S. further swells the labor supply by issuing millions of new visas to foreign nationals seeking jobs and residency in the United States.
The green card is the immigration document responsible for the overwhelming majority of immigration into the United States. One million green cards are now being handed out each and every year. This document legally invites foreign nationals to live permanently in the U.S., claim virtually all federal benefits, receive lifetime work authorization, and ultimately become voting citizens. No nation on Earth admits more new permanent immigrants each year than the United States. No nation on Earth has more than one-fourth as many total immigrants as we do today. And no nation on Earth anywhere near as large ours has a higher percentage of foreign-born residents.
Over the next 10 years, the U.S. will hand out more green cards than the combined populations of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. This has absolutely nothing to do with the border or immigration enforcement: These green cards will be issued — this year and a hundred years from now — unless Congress passes a law to prevent their issuance.
On top of this, the U.S. issues each year approximately 700,000 visas to temporary foreign workers, 500,000 visas to foreign students, and 100,000 visas to refugees and asylum-seekers.
Because these new immigrants and foreign workers arrive legally, corporations can legally substitute them for their existing workers at lower pay. From 2000 through 2014, all jobs gains among the working-age were claimed by foreign labor. Moreover, because immigrant workers are paid lower salaries, their wages are subsidized by U.S. taxpayers. A recent report from the Center for Immigration Studies revealed that 3 in 4 immigrant households with kids are drawing welfare payments.
Including all forms of immigration, the Census Bureau estimates another 14 million immigrants will enter the U.S. on net between now and 2025 — that’s almost five times the number of students who will graduate from public high school in America this year.
Assuming no law is passed to reduce immigration, the Census Bureau estimates that, in less than eight years’ time, the percentage of U.S. residents born in a foreign-country will be the highest level in our history. And the bureau estimates — again, assuming Congress does not reduce immigration rates — that the foreign-born population share will keep rising to new all-time records for as long as they can project.
Pew Research Projects that new immigrants and their children will add another 103 million residents to the U.S. over the next five decades. That’s the population equivalent of 25 cities of Los Angeles.
Did any American vote for this extreme and untested policy?
Yet our politicians who have created this policy do print or speak a word about it. This remains the forbidden conversation.
And the reason it is not discussed is because it cannot withstand scrutiny. Pew Research polling found that Americans want immigration reduced — not increased — by an overwhelming 3 to 1 margin. A mere 20 percent of Democratic voters and a miniscule 7 percent of Republican voters want more immigration.
GOP pollster Kellyanne Conway found that colossal majorities of Hispanics and African-Americans — among those hurt the most by the unceasing arrival of new low-wage workers — want U.S. workers to be given preference for jobs. By nearly a 10 to 1 margin, Americans of all backgrounds believe companies should raise wages instead of importing new labor from abroad.
This is the immigration reform voters want.
Rhetorical games grow weary. We’ve had vastly more immigration than ever before, but our politicians pretend like we’ve had very little. Nearly 1 in 4 residents aged 25-53 is not working, but our politicians talk of needing more immigration to fill “labor shortages.” Billionaire CEOs bully and intimidate concerned parents into silence while helicoptering their own kids to the world’s most expensive private schools.
What is missing from this conversation is a sense of moderation, of limits and of compassion for struggling families.
It is not caring, but callous, to bring in so many workers that there are not enough jobs for them or those already living here. It is not mainstream, but extreme, to continue surging immigration beyond all historical precedent. And it is not rational, but radical, to refuse to recognize limits.
Lettered on our nation’s seal are the words E Pluribus Unum. Out of many, one. It does a disservice to both the country and the immigrant when we bring in larger numbers than we can reasonably expect to assimilate. If we allow our immigration system to replicate in America the same failed conditions which people have left, we are hurting the country and any who would seek to enter it in the future.
For that reason, we should only admit as many new arrivals as we can reasonably expect to absorb into our schools, labor markets and communities. We must never admit so large a number that the immigrants themselves are unlikely to enter the middle class or achieve stable incomes. And we have to recognize that there are record millions already living inside our borders in desperate need of a job.
After nearly half a century of massive immigration it is time to turn our attention to our own residents. It is time to help our own workers, families and communities — immigrant and U.S.-born — rise together into the middle class.
We need an immigration policy that shows compassion for Americans.
Anyone running for the White House who cannot publicly commit to these principles should consider a different occupation. Americans should no longer have to wonder for whom their leaders work.
Sen. Jeff Sessions is a Republican from Alabama and serves as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest. Rep. Dave Brat is a Republican from Virginia.

WP: Three women robbed in Capitol Hill area by groups of teens, police say

From VDARE:

The Washington Post proves again that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The capital’s paper of record gave readers a story about teens and robberies on Capitol Hill, but doesn’t say what the suspects look like. Readers learn that “[d]escriptions of the assailants in each case were scanty but similar.”

So what are the descriptions? The Post doesn’t elaborate.

We can guess, however, that the “teens” are blacks because news organizations routinely leave race out of stories about crime.

Perhaps the Post ombudsman can explain how this story helps readers, or will help readers identify suspects for police.

Then again, the average Capitol Hill staffer knows, party and ideology and even race regardless, what kind of “teens” they need to watch out for in D.C.

As for commenters on the story, the Post’s “scanty” description doesn’t fool them. They are assuming the “teens” are blacks, and they know why the Post won’t say.

From the comments at WP:

* The DNC is soliciting the police for a description of these fine young men so that they can ensure that they are registered to vote.

* WP is so transparent in it’s misguided struggle to deflect any negative reporting on young men of color in this city behaving badly. If it was an Asian kid and a white kid robbing a citizen…say so. If it’s two black kids…say so, you WP cowards.

* It would be so hard for Wpost to provide a description of the perps.

At least we have learned by your lack of accountability in reporting that the suspects most likely fit the description of others you won’t describe.

Black male, 16-20, left in Minivan.

* It’s open season. People have learnt the benefits of operating in a mob. They probably graduated from mob flashes at the 7-11. They’ll keep graduating into more brazen and heinous acts.

* Lets hope the police pressed for more detail in the description. Do they not need the public’s help in catching these criminals? Perhaps they already know who they are and do not want to alert them. That a person cannot give but vague descriptions of person who assaults them is suspicious.

* Why are you assuming the victims gave vague descriptions? Have you seen the police report? I’m pretty sure it’s this newspaper that is giving vague descriptions. Scratch that……NO DESCRIPTION. By announcing the perps were black is going to alert them? Do you know how stupid that sounds?

* What was the point of this article? I mean there is no description of the perpetrators? How tall are they, ethnicity, age so that other people who live or work in Capitol Hill can be on the look out? I would hate for anyone’s wife or girlfriend to be another victim and these teens whoever they are need to be stopped immediately.

* “Groups of teens???” Why doesn’t the WP have the gonads to call a spade a spade, and report that the criminals were young black thugs?

* Once again the WAPO “editorial board” sets the bar high in aiding the community in preventing crime. The depth of the factual reporting they demand has no peer. Where else would the fact that teens were suspected be divulged so clearly? With this virtually photographic description of the felons can the end of this crime wave be far away?

* Robbed by “teenagers” and “descripstions of the assailants in each case were scanty but similar.” From that I necessarily must conclude that the assailants were blond eskimos and the victims were aged Mongolian women.

NYT: How can employers confront the bias those with African-American names face in the job market?

From the NYT comments:

* African Americans, have, unwittingly created their own unique problem. Naming of black children with converged names such Deshong, Kenisha, et. al., is desirable by blacks for many reason but it is seen as unnecessary and regrettably it is an open invitation for discrimination. Whites associate the black names with criminality or worse, with assumptions about socio-economic status, intelligence or simply as a way that says this person will cause trouble. Yes, it is very, very wrong to make those casual associations. But, race is a criteria for too many people. The names just open the door for discrimination. And again, yes, it is very wrong.
Jews in America have endured this discrimination since their arrival in the United States several generations ago. Many Jews got around the discrimination because they are white and the names could just as well be a good, Christian name. For instance Stein, may be of German origin and not necessarily Jewish. Other Jews deliberately change their names to avoid discrimination. The name Israel was changed to Iselin. First names remained basically American and many reached into the bible. Ruth, Rachel, Sara, Joseph, Jacob and many others simply referred to biblical names of the patriarchs. The names were easily recognized by white christians as part of Judeo-Christian heritage but were not necessarily a Jewish name.
The current issue is discrimination and a desire to create identity. The desire and the reality work against each other.

* “If a person is unstereotypically nonwhite — which is to say, for example, that he or she acts white — that person is more likely to be considered for the job.”
In other words, if an person is able to read, write, and speak standard English, is willing to work, and does not have a criminal record, then the person is more likely to be considered for a job.

* This conversation would be turned on its head if we were talking about the NBA or NFL teams as employers where unusual black names are in the majority, or baseball teams, in which case Hispanic names are the norm. I suspect that if a “Tom Smith” applied sight unseen, and stats unseen to these teams he would probably be overlooked as a likely under performer….I would also suspect that in places like Silicon Valley, first names that refer to people of Indian or Chinese origin might improve one’s chances of getting an interview.

* I cannot believe that the author of this article would say “..which is to say, for example that he or she acts white”. It is such a sad reflection of African Americans and their self worth. I say this as a black person of west indian parentage. The author is a presumably professional woman, who is using a phrase ‘acting white’ to describe people who do not exhibit behavior typical of ‘the ghetto’. I wish african americans like this author could get out more, so that they could see that for black people outside of the US, what she calls ‘acting white’ has absolutely nothing to do with race, and everything to do with social expectations, for people of all races. For example in a multi-racial business setting in the Caribbean, no one associates being business like with ‘acting white’. People associate behaviors with socio-economic status, not with race. Middle income and above blacks generally do not have any interaction with the equivalent of ‘the ghetto’ any more than whites do, so why would behaving the way they are socialized to behave be an indication of ‘acting white’? This is why I always say that the root problems in black america are self inflicted.

* Not a roadblock to becoming president.

* You say, “African-American names became symbols of resistance. They resist uniformity and West European influence, and therefore the limiting cultural framework of how one should present his or herself.” Do employers regularly hire those who are a “symbol of resistance”? When teamwork in the workplace is a necessity, “resistance” is not a characteristic one looks for! As for “resisting West European influence”? Well, we’re a country that was founded by Western Europeans, our laws and customs reflect that, and we’re still that by a slim majority today. Tribalism has no place in the workplace or any other place for that matter.

It’s interesting that all these made-up names (and no name in Africa ever resembled these names), are something relatively new. There used to be a lot of Franklin Roosevelt Jones in the black community. Blacks that work for me have European names as do their children. It’s the grandchildren that have these “unique” names.

When parents of ANY color/ethic group give their child a name that will be considered peculiar in their area, it’s a disadvantage. I’m referring to names that may be fine for whites in Alabama – names such as Leffiew – but are going to be a major handicap for that child when he grows up and takes a job in NYC.

There are far better ways for ones child to stand out and be unique than by giving them a name that most people would find weird. If you want an unusual name, try Mary and John – don’t see those much these days.

* Chinese-Americans usually adopt a common Christian first name in place of a name difficult to pronounce for Westerners. Is it racist to suggest that someone with a name like La’Tisha or Shawnequa change it to Tish or Shauna as a nom de travaille?

* The author’s name is Morgan, which is quite neutral. And the author is doing well – in part because her neutral name shielded her from having resumes immediately thrown in the trash, as would happen to a “Shaniqua” or a “Rayshawn”. Her parents loved her enough not to burden her with a name that might block her from getting a foot in the door. Parents should avoid making a statement with the names they give their kids. Rich people can get away with it but average parents and their kids can’t. How do you think ” Moon Unit” would have fared with his name if his parent wasn’t well-known and presumably reasonably well-off?

* Screening candidates for jobs is not without cost. It takes time to painstakingly go through resumes, sometimes hundreds of them. As Nobel Prize Laureate Dan Kahneman proposes his book, Thinking Fast and Slow, screeners will start to use heuristics to simplify the decision making process.

If stereotypically (I don’t have the data but I suspect this is statistically true as well) a “ghetto” name is far more likely to lead to an unsuited candidate, screeners are going to use that rule to speed up their decisions.

An economist would say, that might be perfectly rational.

* How many people came through Ellis Island and either changed their name or had them changed by officials there? A lot. During WW1 many people with German last names changed them to sound more Anglo. Even today, people from all over the world “westernize” their names when they come to the US.

People do what they need to do to succeed in the job market.

* I will simply note the obvious: none of the black pundits in this debate have “ghetto names”. Indeed, I’m not sure I can think of a single black pundit of any note who has such a name, though they are obviously pretty common (look to any sports team to verify that fact).

What does this say about what those names actually indicate?
