Richard Rushfield’s Birthday Party

Richard wore a suit and tie for the Saturday night gathering at the Broadway Bar in downtown Los Angeles.

He works at the LA Times a couple of days a week (overseeing its online content) and spends the rest of his working time finishing off a memoir of his college years.

I feel awkward stepping into the room but Richard introduces me around.

His wife Nicole LaPort is also at the party. She’s working on a book on Dreamworks.

The crowd swells to over 100 (and no creeps!). It includes Mark Ebner and his girlfriend Lisa from Spike TV, Michael Sonnenschein and his blonde friend Sandy (working on another sexy book, this one a memoir of a week-long convention of truckers), author Kim Cooper and her hubby Richard Schave (who had a two-year flirtation with Chabad 1999-2000), Anna David (published her first novel in May, is working on her third while her second seeks a publisher)…

I’m asked for my theory on David Hans Schmidt’s suicide.

I say that when you make yourself a pariah like he did (and I have), your grip on life becomes tenuous.
