I read that line in Richard Ellmann’s biography of Oscar Wilde. It is spot on. When my writing is flowing, I have no conscience. Nor should I in the creative phase. After I have written and started editing, then it is time to employ the conscience. The pen like the penis has no conscience in its creative stage. That does not mean that one should allow these impulses to rule, but it is certainly worth treating their predilections with respect.
If I meet a great girl who’s great for me in all respects except I can’t get erect with her, that’s important. She’s probably not the girl for me.
If my free-flowing typing writes some cruelty, it may not be worth publishing, but it is certainly worth my reading and contemplating.
