Confessions Of A Hasidic New York Landlord

He tells nymag.com: “If there’s a black tenant in the house—in every building we have, I put in white tenants. They want to know if black people are going to be living there. So sometimes we have ten apartments and everything is white, and then all of the sudden one tenant comes in with one black roommate, and they don’t like it. They see black people and get all riled up, they call me: “We’re not paying that much money to have black people live in the building.” If it’s white tenants only, it’s clean. I know it’s a little bit racist but it’s not. They’re the ones that are paying and I have to give them what they want. Or I’m not going to get the tenants and the money is not going to be what it is.”

Comments to the article:

* Only idealistic-liberal-thinkers believe that racism has gone away. As an executive, I never have and never will hire a black candidate, regardless of credentials. I have sold a townhome I lived in because a black family moved in next door (a family who relocated from an urban setting).
My family acts non-racial in public because society expects us to. But we don’t help black people in any way. Simply put, I don’t see them as Americans and I only see them bringing problems into neighborhoods and schools. There are things that are ingrained in their DNA. Being aggressive. Acting on anger. Being sexually explicit and acting on those urges. Not being able to communicate in standard American English. I never found my black college “mates” to be particularly scholarly. I’ve seen them be tardy and lazy in a professional setting. They’re loud and don’t understand social boundaries and personal space like whites, and other educated minorities, do. I’ve seen executives adjust their behavior around black people, that is, we don’t like them in the upper echelons of corporation.

* Hasidic landlords and black tenants deserve each other. It’s a shame they’re parting ways.
