You’re afraid it’s all been wasted time

When I think about how much human connection I’ve missed over the past year by socially isolating myself, I feel sad. Then, when I think about how I used the past year, I feel better.

If I had used my extra alone time over the past year primarily to watch more TV and movies and play video games, I’d feel a great sense of loss now. But I didn’t do that. I spent my time primarily reading books, and I averaged about three books a week over the past year. Now, I may not have managed social isolation as well as I could. Perhaps I should have been more social and less of a fraidy cat. So I ain’t saying I made the best choices, but I can look back on the past year without the sense it was wasted time. I never got depressed. I never felt isolated or lonely. I never felt fatigued by my lack of a social life. Instead, I primarily got excited each morning about the possibilities for reading.

The Eagles may not have been the most profound pop group, but if they weren’t, they were pretty close.

Well baby, there you stand
With your little head down in your hand
Oh my God, you can’t believe it’s happening again
Your baby’s gone and you’re all alone
And it looks like the end
Back out on the street
And you’re trying to remember, oh
How do you start it over
You don’t know if you can
You don’t care much for a stranger’s touch
But you can’t hold your man
You never thought you’d be alone
This far down the line
But I know what’s been on your mind
You’re afraid it’s all been wasted time
The autumn leaves have got you thinking
About the first time that you fell, fell
You didn’t love the boy too much
No, no you just loved the boy too well, yeah
So you live from day to day
And you dream about tomorrow
And the hours go by like minutes
And the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something to make them go away
And I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind
From wondering what I left behind
And from worrying about this wasted time
The love has come and gone
The years keep rushing on
I remember what you told me
Before you went out on your own
Sometimes to keep it together
You got to leave it alone
So you can get on with your search, baby
And I can get on with mine
Maybe someday we will find
That it wasn’t really wasted time

Arnold Kling blogs:

1. Starting around 2000, the amount of information on the Internet doubles in a year. If that goes on for ten years, there would have been 420 million times the information in 2010 as in 2000. Even if that number is imprecise (and it has to be imprecise), there is way more information out there than there used to be. The increase is staggering.

2. 20th-century elites and institutions relied on having a much less chaotic and engulfing information environment. Politicians, journalists, and academics now are overwhelmed by: (a) what they don’t know that others do know. Think of citizens using cell phones to cover events sooner and more completely than paid journalists; and (b) by the amount that others know about them that they used to able to keep secret. Think of President Kennedy trying to get away with his sexual escapades today.

3. The elites cannot accept the new reality that there is so much information that they cannot control. They see new competitors as illegitimate (“fake news”) and they blame others for elites’ loss of status and respect.

4. The general public is frustrated by the arrogance of the elites, and they have the means to assemble revolts. This has happened everywhere, from the Arab Spring to the Yellow Vests to the January 6 riot. These revolts have no organization and so they end up not accomplishing much.

5. Society requires authority. But the existing authorities can seemingly do nothing other than hope for a return to the 20th century when they had closer to a monopoly on information. And they seem to be completely incapable of dealing with the digital world. They cannot operate at Internet speed (it takes the bureaucracy too long to react to events) or at Internet scale (the Obamacare web site fiasco).

6. Maybe a new generation of elites and/or institutions will emerge that is more adept at dealing with technology and sufficiently humble to deal with a situation in which information is more dispersed than it was last century.

Michael Fumento: ‘Don’t buy the media hype over the new China virus’

Michael Fumento, who made similar remarks on Dennis Prager’s radio show in early 2020, wrote in the New York Post Jan. 23, 2020: “…there appears to be nothing very special about this outbreak of the 2019-nCoV or Wuhan virus. It should actually be called the DvV, or Déjà vu Virus, because we have been through these hysterias before. Over and over. Heterosexual AIDS, Ebola repeatedly, the H1N1 swine flu that was actually vastly milder than the regular flu and, especially, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003.”

March 8, 2020, Fumento wrote: “… the spread of the virus continues to slow. …This month, the Northern Hemisphere, which includes the countries with the most cases, starts heating up. Almost all respiratory viruses hate warm and moist weather. That’s why flu dies out in America every year by May at the latest and probably why Latin America has reported only 25 coronavirus cases. The Philippines, where I live, has about a third of the US population, but it’s so damned hot and humid here, so far we have had no confirmed cases of internal transmission.”

A Google search reveals that 12,604 people have died of corona virus in the Philippines.

Fumento has kept publishing about Covid-19 all through the past year despite being so dramatically wrong about the severity of the virus.
