BRIDGEPORT — In a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday, a New Jersey man accuses a prominent rabbi from New Haven of repeatedly sexually assaulting him when he was a teenager.
The target of the allegation is Rabbi Daniel Greer, a well-known member of the Orthodox Jewish community in New Haven and a former member of the city’s board of police commissioners and governor’s commission on school choice. The suit was filed electronically in U.S. District Court in Bridgeport Tuesday morning, a court clerk said.
The suit names as co-defendants two schools run by the rabbi, Yeshiva of New Haven, Inc. and The Gan School, Inc. It accused the schools of “allowing the violent sexual abuse to continue unabated for years.”
It alleges that Greer sexually abused another male student as well.
According to a copy of the lawsuit, the plaintiff was sexually abused over three years, starting when he was 15. The copy was provided by attorney Antonio Ponvert III of Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder.
During this time, the plaintiff was forced to engage in sexual acts and he was frequently given alcohol by Greer, the lawsuit said. It also said Greer showed the plaintiff pornographic films.
The plaintiff alleges the assault and abuse happened on school property, at Greer’s home, and in motels in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, according to the lawsuit.
The name of the plaintiff is on the lawsuit. The Courant has a policy of not naming victims of alleged sexual assaults.
The rabbi never was arrested but could be charged criminally, Ponvert said. The plaintiff didn’t go to the police when he was abused.
“At the time that it was happening he did not report it to police because he didn’t understand that what was happening to him was sexual assault and was a crime,” he said.
WIKIPEDIA: Rabbi Daniel Greer is the founder of the Yeshiva of New Haven and a one time candidate for the Democratic nomination for a New York State Assembly District. He was the father of Batsheba Greer, the lead plaintiff in case of the Yale Five.
Greer was born in New York City to Moses and Angele Greer. Angele was a native of Egypt and a graduate of the University of Paris. Moses was a graduate of City College of New York and a wholesale wool resaler. His parents were both Modern Orthodox Jews and Greer grew-up attending day school. He went to high school at the Manhattan Talmudical Academy.
Greer attended college at Princeton University where for his first two years he would eat alone in his room so he could have kosher food. He spent his junior year studying at Hebrew University of Jerusalem after which he switched from being a biology to being a near eastern studies major. After graduating from Princeton Greer spent a year studying talmud and related subjects under Joseph Soloveitchik.
Greer then entered Yale Law School where he was roommates with Jerry Brown. Other members of his Yale Law class included Gary Hart and Michael Horowitz. After graduating Greer worked for a short time at a Wall Street Law firm, but quickly moved into the administration of John V. Lindsay. He initially was an examining attorney for the Commissioner of Investigations, then general counsel and later Deputy Commissioner for Ports and Terminals.
During this time he also became affiliated with the Save Soviet Jewry movement and was one of the moving figures in getting the United States State Department to intervene in the Leonid Rigerman case. In 1971 he married Sarah Bergman, a Jewish day school teacher.
In 1972 Greer ran against incumbent Richard Gottfried for the Democratic nomination for the state assembly in one of the Upper West Side Manhattan districts. Both candidates tried to project themselves as running on a campaign plank for McGovern and Peace. However Greer was becoming disenchanted with the welfare state and even more so with Lindsay’s community control of schools which led to the firing of many Jewish teachers to make room for African-American ones.
In 1973 Greer and his wife went to Israel with work permits and plans to make aliyah. They arrived in time to be there through the Yom Kippur War. Greer apprenticed in law under Eliyahu Lankin, the man who captained the Altalena which (according to some) was sunk on the orders of David Ben-Gurion while Yitzchak Rabin led a charge killing those on the shore who sought to aid the Altalena crew to safety. Greer also studied to be ordained a rabbi with Yehoshua Neuwirth. Greer’s wife Sarah studied under Nehama Leibowitz. Their first son, Dov, was also born in Israel.
After moving to New Haven the Greers established an orthodox day school because there was not a sufficiently religious one in New Haven. Greer continued to work as a lawyer for 14 years. Daniel Greer also served as a time as the New Haven City Police Commissioner.
Over the years the Greers expanded their day school into a full Yeshiva with both an elementary school and boys and girls high schools (now defunct). He also formed various organizations to redevelop the neighborhood where his Yeshiva was located, including fighting the prostitution in the neighborhood.
Greers children went to Yale. After the change in policy in 1995 that required even students with families in New Haven to live on campus, he sought an exemption for his daughter Batsheva on the grounds that living in co-ed dorms that freely distributed condoms, had lectures on safe sex and co-ed bathrooms were incompatible with Orthodox Judaism. Yale refused to cooperate, so the Greers paid the rent on a room their daughter never even entered. In December 1997 Batsheba and three others brought a suit against Yale. The fifth of the Yale five had married three months earlier than planned to avoid having to follow Yale’s rules.

The Daily Beast: NYPD Inspector Michael Ameri shot himself Friday in a Department car hours after the FBI reportedly questioned him for a second time about a series of alleged payoffs made by members of New York’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community—including several big donors to Mayor Bill de Blasio—to high-ranking officials in the NYPD.
That probe has focused on lurid reports of diamonds for top cops’ wives and hookers for those cops on free flights to Vegas, but it’s also put a spotlight on a longstanding nexus of shady dealings between New York City politicians, including the mayor, the NYPD, and the Jewish community’s own “volunteer” police.
A few months before killing himself, Ameri cut ties with one such pretend police officer, Alex “Shaya” Lichtenstein, the New York Post reported. Last month, Lichtenstein was arrested and charged with offering thousands of dollars in cash bribes to cops in the department’s gun licensing bureau in exchange for very tough to obtain in New York City gun permits.
Lichtenstein reportedly bragged that he had procured them for 150 friends and associates, charging $18,000 a pop and paying a third of that to his police connections. According to prosecutors, the scheme had enabled a man with a prior criminal history that included four domestic violence complaints and “a threat against someone’s life” to obtain a gun.
In the criminal complaint, filed in Manhattan federal court, Lichtenstein was identified as a member of Borough Park’s private, all male, unarmed volunteer security patrol, known as the Shomrim (Hebrew for “guards” or “watchers”).
The complaint did not identify any of Lichtenstein’s alleged customers, however, but sources knowledgeable about the Shomrim are skeptical that he was obtaining permits on behalf of, or for, the Shomrim as an organization. Instead, they argue, it is more plausible that Lichtenstein was operating as a freelancer—albeit one who likely exploited police connections nurtured during his time as a member of the group.
After all, it is not exactly a secret that the Shomrim—along with others from the ultra-Orthodox community who serve as unpaid liaisons to various city and state law enforcement agencies–maintain close relations with members of the NYPD, and particularly those who serve in their local precincts.
For example, news sites and Twitter accounts that play to an ultra-Orthodox audience are littered with pictures of Shomrim hobnobbing with high-ranking police officers at pre-holiday “briefings,” honoring them with “appreciation” awards at community breakfasts or charity dinners, and even engaging in friendly competition at an annual summer softball game.
But Lichtenstein aside, it would be a mistake to conclude that for the Shomrim at least these relationships are motivated by the prospect of personal financial gain or status concerns, even though there’s no doubt that having an “in” with the cops can boost one’s standing in the community. Instead, access and influence are the means of achieving a more important communal goal: the freedom to operate as the de facto police force of their communities, but with backup from the cops in the most dangerous situations.
In some sense, it is almost as if the Shomrim view the NYPD as their auxiliary police.
The first of these Brooklyn patrol groups were formed in the 1970s in the Hasidic neighborhoods of Crown Heights and Williamsburg in response to rising neighborhood crime and the belief that the police were not up the task of keeping Jews safe. (The journalist and author Matthew Shaer traces the roots of the Crown Heights patrol to a Hasidic rabbi and teacher named Samuel Schrage, who in 1964 founded a group called the Crown Heights Maccabees following the alleged assault of Hasidic students by a group of black youth and the attempted rape of a rabbi’s wife by a black man.)
Today, Shomrim (and in some cases, rival groups known as Shmira) exist in every ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Brooklyn (and in other ultra-Orthodox communities in the U.S. and abroad). The groups operate independently and, while their leaders are fond of characterizing them as the “eyes and ears” of their communities, responding to hotline calls about everything from vandalism, missing persons and attempted robbery to domestic violence and even sexual abuse, they do much more than watch and listen. In Brooklyn, they are equipped with SUVs and cruisers tricked out with “police package” flashing lights, sophisticated two-way radio dispatch systems, bulletproof vests and outfits emblazoned with shields that look an awful lot like NYPD ones—all paid for by donations and, in some cases, government largesse funneled to them by members of the City Council.
While they lack the authority to make arrests, even with those similar shields, the Shomrim often do things like search, chase, apprehend, and detain.
Indeed, as the head of the Borough Park Shomrim explained to the Village Voice’s Nick Pinto in 2011, people in the community call Shomrim because “they want to see action right away, not get caught up in a lot of questions and answers…Not that that isn’t the right way for the police to do it—who am I to say they shouldn’t ask a lot of questions?”
But people also call Shomrim—as opposed to 911—because, after all, cops are outsiders. And outsiders cannot always be counted on to be sensitive to the specific concerns of the religious community, concerns that include the desire/obligation to protect other Jews from the long arm of the law. And so, while the Shomrim are not averse—and sometimes quite eager—to help cops nab a suspect who is not one of their own, they can be much less forthcoming when a fellow Jew is the suspect.

* Hugs probably hasn’t been stopped because superficially he’s a triple counter: black, Jewish, and autistic. Realistically he should be incarcerated, or his parents should be held accountable for his conduct (i.e., keeping him at home.)

The city is surprisingly white for those who haven’t spent any time there, so there is no shortage of privileged men around. Nor, for that matter, is there any shortage of NYPD cops. I can think of many cities with even fewer whites per capita on the sidewalks and many fewer cops where this behavior would have been stopped three years ago. Is this the ultimate end result of leftist propaganda and demoralization of white men? Men who refuse to defend even white women from brazen street assaults on women committed by negroes?

It is time that blacks not be expected nor expect of themselves to set the standard for goodness and upstanding character in a society that regularly treats them cruelly. When I ask, where is the love, I am really asking you to tell me in return, to speak by your actions and take responsibility for the kind of radicalism it is now appropriate for blacks to take up: Should we heed Martin’s counsel and open our arms in embrace or should we be wary of yet another painful and bloody era of speaking and acting in bad faith, and as Malcolm advised, close our fists?

LA TIMES: NEW YORK — They call him the “Wild Man,” and he’s been terrorizing the Upper West Side for seven years.
Larry Hogue, a 52-year-old homeless crack addict, roams the streets with an assortment of weapons–a machete, a screwdriver, an ice pick–and police say he has a penchant for chasing women with small dogs and pushing pedestrians into traffic.
He’s been arrested or sent to mental hospitals at least 37 times since 1985, but always ends up back on the streets of this neighborhood, a mix of affluent high-rise apartments and rough tenements.
Authorities say Hogue is a chilling example of how dangerous, mentally ill people can slip through the cracks of the criminal and mental health systems.
Hogue has a long history of crack addiction and mental illness, police say. But a person cannot be committed to a mental hospital involuntarily unless at least two doctors agree he is an immediate danger to himself or others.
And he can only be held by the legal system when he commits a serious infraction and is tried and convicted.
“Unless they have a court order, we can’t keep them long,” said Martha Reyes, administrative coordinator at St. Luke’s Hospital, where Hogue has often been taken. “We can’t force them to stay. Our hands are tied, too.”
Helen DePaz, a psychiatric nurse at St. Luke’s, has watched Hogue come through several times. “He takes his medicine and then he’s nice,” she said.
Hogue was released from Riker’s Island just recently after a three-month stint for vandalism. He’s already been picked up twice, once for chasing someone with a knife. The following Sunday, he was sent to Bellevue Hospital after he scratched a car with a knife, police said.
Rattled neighbors can be forgiven for doubting he would be there long.
“Everyone on the street is terrified,” said Lisa Lehr, 54, a community activist and auxiliary police officer. “We’re so afraid that when we see him, we flee indoors. He goes after women, children and small pets.”
Sunday was a warm, sunny day with thousands of people strolling the Upper West Side. Before the vandalism incident, Hogue was one of them, walking into traffic and pulling his pants down, sometimes approaching people, trying to open car doors.
Hulking and powerfully built, he cuts a frightening figure as he ambles barefoot down the street, waving his arms as he wades into traffic.
When stopped for an interview by a reporter, Hogue was both friendly and hostile. He appeared disoriented.
“I’m a very angry guy,” he said, dipping a cherry Popsicle into a cup of take-out chowder and then eating it.
Hogue said he likes smoking crack but added that “I need food and $5 a day to live.”
Asked how old he is, Hogue said, “Old enough to kill. I’ll kill anybody for money. If you want someone bumped off, let me know.” He said he grew up in Westport, Conn., but authorities believe he’s from New Jersey.
Lehr said residents fear that Hogue really will kill someone, recalling Kevin McKiever, a 30-year-old transient accused of stabbing a woman to death as she walked her dog on West 69th Street in June, 1991.
Luis Gomez often sees Hogue walk into the middle of 96th Street, pull down his pants and sit down as cars race by. Hogue frequently urinates and defecates on the sidewalk, Gomez said.
“It’s real scary,” said Gomez, wheeling his 9-month-old son, Nicholas, in a stroller down 96th Street.
Hogue was arrested and charged with attempted murder in 1988 for pushing a girl in front of a moving bus. She escaped unhurt. Hogue plea-bargained down to a misdemeanor and served nearly a year in prison, police said.
“We’ve done everything we can but unfortunately he’s protected by mental health laws,” said Officer Heidi Higgins, who has worked on Hogue’s case.
* NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Before he was put away, Hogue, now 65, menaced the neighborhood around 96th St. He was big and he was bad, regularly mugging people to support his drug habit.
He set fires under cars, heaved rocks through stained glass church windows, masturbated in front of kids, stalked seniors and threatened children with nail-studded clubs.
Cops would arrest him and take him to the psychiatric ward, where he would be cut off from his crack supply.
After a few weeks his demons would disappear and he’d be back to his old tricks on W. 96th St.
Word that Hogue was once again on the loose on 96th St. – even for a short time – sent a chill through area residents.
“I’ve been a New Yorker my whole life and he’s the only thing that makes me afraid,” said Dorothy White, a resident of W. 96th St. for 25 years. “This man is dangerous and I’m terrified.”
Michael Burns, 74, who once saw Hogue smash a car window after the driver refused to pay him for a squeegee job marveled that he wasn’t better guarded.
“Whoever released him has got a screw loose,” Burns said.
Hogue’s reign of terror during the 90s made him a symbol of a blundering mental-health system. He was put in the slammer for a year after he slugged a 16-year-old girl and pushed her in front of a Con Ed truck.
* It does not look like the Hug Thug is part Jewish. His father is named “Tyrone Himmelstein,” and lives in a housing project in spanish harlem (on 2nd ave at 112th street).
It is possible he got the name from a Jewish grandfather, but how many black children were NYC area Jews both siring AND giving their last names to in 1962? (based on the public record of Tyrone’s DOB). Maybe a few by 1972, but not 1962.
The name is not exclusively Jewish, it simply means “Heaven-stone,” the type of pretty sounding name (like Rosenfeld=”Rose Field”) that you had to pay the local government some cash to get as a last name, so is disproportionately but far from exclusively Jewish.
* Imagine that a white frat guy was repeatedly punching, harassing, and shaking women down for money in public places while wearing a “FREE HUGS” sign. It would be a major national scandal. The mayor and police chief would probably be forced to resign. It would be referenced endlessly as a graphic real world example of the misogyny and rape culture created by white men.
* When I was a grad student at Cal in the late 90s-early 00s, it was typical for the psycho homeless on Euclid to try to accost people. No cop ever came by, no one ever turned them away. We were expected to ignore it. One particularly bad time was when a man wouldn’t stop following me or screaming at me, mad that I was smoking and wouldn’t give him a cig. I finally changed my path and abruptly stopped, putting another man between myself and the psycho. The man did nothing, but off the psycho went muttering after someone else.
At that time, I often was down in Palo Alto. One day on University Ave. while standing and smoking, a homeless bum came up to me, probably to beg a cigarette. Before he said anything, a man in a suit walking down the street accosted him, bellowed at him to “Get the Hell away from her” and basically threw him half a block. It took me a minute to even realize I should say thank you, as I was so used to hurrying away rather than standing ground, and so shocked I was that he did Something, let alone For a Woman.

* It should be pointed out that the hugs are not free, as the sign claims, so at the very least he’s guilty of false advertising.
There’s apparently a steady supply of young White women who are all too willing to embrace a random young black male stranger. Why is that?!

* “Crazy Larry” terrorized that part of Manhattan for quite a few years. People protested, to no effect. For example, my niece about 12 years old at the time (she and her parents lived in the West 96 street area) was at her bus stop one day when Larry approached, and grabbed one of the 12-year-old boys in a headlock. From what she told me, he was a pretty big guy and completely irrational.
They complained to the city, as did a lot of their fellow residents on the upper West side. Nothing happened until he targeted a middle-aged woman who lived in the same building as my relatives, and who worked for a television station (ABC? Not sure) … The television station chose to do a story on Crazy Larry, and he was soon deported to New Jersey, I believe.
Here’s the point: political influence determines whether or not the government will protect you. I’m sorry to say that, but that’s my conclusion after 30 years working for government at the Town County Federal, and State levels.

These words offer a tremendous incite into the thought process. It’s all right there. Next time you hear about some heinous crime committed by one his brothas and think ‘What were they thinking?’ —-well, now you know.
* In the old days of 20 or more years ago, that was considered chivalry. It was actually pretty common in my experience. But along with it, women were nicer to men. I don’t have a better way to say it.
And even after radical feminism became ingrained in so many women’s attitudes, men hadn’t really recalibrated. Now they have.
* He’s been running an extortion racket through intimidation and the threat of violence. He has his ‘FREE HUGS’ sign and runs up to young, easily scared women and cows them into going along with the supposed free hug. Then he demands money and turns menacing, dropping the friendly facade and intimidating the women into handing over some money. That’s how he’s been able to make $30 p/hr. There’s different variations of this sort of thing played out against tourists and other unsuspecting persons all over. Beware of strangers approaching you about anything and don’t be afraid to be unfriendly in brushing them off.
* Steve, as long as you’re dealing with reigns of terror consistently ignored by the constabulary here in NYC, can you do something about the bike gangs of Inwood/Ft George/Washington Heights? They somewhat came to the public eye after running down and beating an Asian youth who was driving his wife and child in an SUV and fell afoul of their Mad Max antics, but since that burst of publicity nothing has changed. They take over the streets on warm weekends like Dodge City on payday.
* I see them popping wheelies down Second then over the Queensboro Bridge and up and down Queens Boulevard. Kinda like Marlon Brando and Lee Marvin in The Wild Ones. That’s a unique black sub-culture. I haven’t read anything in the press about them.
* You know that old saw about how it’s better to teach the poor to fish, than to just give them fish?
I guess it applies here as well. If you see a girl grappling with diversity, you don’t help her right away, that’s like giving her fish.
So what you do when you see she’s got herself into Black trouble, you catch her eye as you walk past and say, “You shoulda voted Trump!”
* Who wants to be the next George Zimmerman? Who is going to lay hands on a black jewish autistic? No white man that has been through the American education system and watches TV. You just don’t do that.
* I saw black motorcycle gangs roar by in Chicago in the 1980s and 1990s, maybe up to three dozen at once.
My impression is that motorcycle gangs tend to be guys who were in the military, come home, and find civilian life dull. They’re a nuisance, but they’re less trouble in America than the freikorps of ex-soldiers were in Germany after the Great War. Motorcycle gang members tend to be older and richer than street gang members, so they’re fewer in number and thus are a less pervasive problem.
* Liberals went to court in the late 60s saying that being mentally ill was just a lifestyle choice, and that even if they were mentally ill, it was cruel to warehouse them when they could be re-integrated into society and get their meds at a community center, blah, blah, blah. The well-done but dishonest movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest had a great influence.
Fully 1/3 of hospital beds in the 60s were in mental institutions, so states were happy to be rid of these people. And of course the community centers never materialized and even if they did, these guys (it was mostly guys) were too drunk or crazy or drugged to remember to go get their meds.
And now we spend billions of dollars subsidizing the street life of crazies, druggies, and alcoholics. And the Left has another Compassion Club to beat Republicans with. Note that we have heard nothing about the homeless (or about Cindy Sheehan for that matter) since one January day in 2009. Homelessness will be a National Problem once again the day Trump is sworn in.
* I imagine today the Kitty Genovese case would not be an example the bystander effect in psychology, but would be about social homophobia and violence against the LGBT community because Genovese happened to be a lesbian and lived with her partner, Mary Ann Zielonko. What’s worse than doing nothing because of some bystander apathy? Doing nothing because of social homophobia because you are a horrible person and devalue people because of sexual orientation.
* Perhaps some sunlight here might lead to sunlight elsewhere and accomplish some public good on behalf of New Yorkers.
* This being Manhattan, I’m amazed that nobody has called this a performance piece meant to start a conversation about the intersection of privilege, gender, race, and traditional notions of boundaries and public space.
* Altercations between men and women in public are often part of some chaotic relationship problem. Getting involved is a waste of time.
But…
At one time one could be sure that a black man, white woman altercation was not in this category and thus one could intervene on her side.
* For an “autistic” guy this Jeremy/Jermaine sure seems to talk a lot.
Autism used to be a pretty clear-cut diagnosis. “Autistic” meant someone who didn’t speak if he could avoid it and who shied away from physical contact, along with obsessive and repetitive behavior of an a-social or anti-social nature. When they could be tested, autistics had decent IQs for handicapped people.
This guy seems to be about the opposite. Talks a lot, stands in a crowded park with a sign seeking physical contact fer cryin’ out loud, and pretty deficient thought processes. Much more likely he’s just kinda retarded and violent. But “autistic” is a somewhat more exotic and classier diagnosis, so maybe some doctor up-diagnosed him so as not to appear racist, which seems to be everyone’s Prime Directive nowadays.
* I used to work at a home and workshop for handicapped people. One of the interesting HBD aspects was that the various handicapped residents often seemed to show ethnically stereotyped behavior to a very exaggerated degree.
For example, the white Yankee guys were obsessive about organization and scheduling, picked up trash they didn’t drop and made sure the recycling was done to a “t”. Black women loved loud music and attention and were generally warm-hearted. Jewish guys were clever and often surprisingly sophisticated about getting what they wanted and often had savant-ish, Rain-Man talents. Latino: bravado and interest in females. Black guys were violent and sexually aggressive and exhibitionistic.
One might almost say that stripped of their higher cognitive functions, the residents became ethnic self-caricatures. That experience went some way in convincing me that HBD is hardwired in at a pretty basic level.
* I just checked with my rabbi: Jermaine Himmelstein is not up to date with his AIPAC dues. So y’all can have at him.

Sure, blame it on the “violent” black man like you guys always do. All of this court drama now for him; he was making good progress on a cure for Zika virus and HIV when he volunteered 60 hrs/week at a local lab, but now its definitely going to be delayed for quite some time. I guess the whole world has to suffer now for these crazy white people.

But the government’s strategy has been more sophisticated than I anticipated in 1999. Crack was so apocalyptic that the government seems to have been following a multimodal drug war strategy that has been pretty effective:
– Come down extremely hard with imprisonment on drugs that make people more violent, like cocaine.
– Err on the side of downer drugs that make people more passive, like heroin
– Err on the side of abuse of legal drugs, like prescription painkillers
– Err on the side of a multiplicity of drugs so that we don’t get back to a situation like crack cocaine in 1990 or powder cocaine in 1980.

It’s like the term ‘Jim Crow’ sums up so much about US history.
* One thing my relatives in law enforcement always stress is that the “Ferguson effect” on law enforcement officers doesn’t have to be very large to produce very big changes. It’s not like the cops are just abandoning the streets — it’s just little stuff here and there, giving a pass to some random knucklehead they would have stopped and hassled a few years ago. Cops catch a surprising number of scary, dangerous guys just by stopping sketchy-looking goofballs who are causing some minor disturbance but otherwise not threatening anyone, because (as the “racist” Broken Windows theory predicts) people who have trouble following the rules in big things also have trouble following the rules about little things. Thus, a lot of officers all easing up at the same time can have a huge effect, even if each individual officer is only making the smallest of changes.
* The three cities that had seen the biggest increases in murder “all seem to have falling populations, higher poverty rates, and higher unemployment than the national average,” the Brennan Center report concluded. “Economic deterioration of these cities could be a contributor to murder increases.”
Rosenfeld, a professor of criminology at the University of Missouri St Louis and the chair of a National Academy of Sciences roundtable on crime trends, said the Brennan Center’s focus on the economic roots of violence was not enough to explain “why homicide increased as much as it did in these cities in a one-year period”.
With liberals, the model has to be twisted to meet the narrative. Here it’s economic deterioration and in an earlier study gun ownership rates where a key factor behind homicide. The narrative must be protected.
The largest study of gun violence in the United States, released Thursday afternoon, confirms a point that should be obvious: widespread American gun ownership is fueling America’s gun violence epidemic.
The study, by Professor Michael Siegel at Boston University and two coauthors, has been peer-reviewed and is forthcoming in the American Journal of Public Health. Siegel and his colleagues compiled data on firearm homicides from all 50 states from 1981-2010, the longest stretch of time ever studied in this fashion, and set about seeing whether they could find any relationship between changes in gun ownership and murder using guns over time.
Here’s the study. Now, I dare you to click on Table 3 and Table 2 to see which factor is the single largest predictor of firearm homicide.
So back to the question at hand. What might be the demographic effects on a city arising from a falling population? Might that increase the proportion of the black population? Or are blacks the first to flee thus leaving whites in the city and increasing the proportion of white? Look at the influence of income inequality from the Seigel study and compare to the influence of the percent of city which is black. The Brennan Center turns its focus on “economic deterioration” but I’m not sure how they instrumentalize that variable. A good proxy would be an increasing gini index measure but this is nowhere near as powerful as race, especially when we measure in terms of Standard Deviation and thus capture the effect of concentration of black social dysfunction.
The “Ferguson Effect” is going to have a greater impact in cities with high black concentrations than in cities with low black representation, so police in two cities with different demographics, acting on the same reluctance to be the next star of a viral video are going to end up with different effect size outcomes in terms of homicides. High concentrations of blacks need a stronger hand to keep them in line and this pays off, as pre-Ferguson homicide rates indicate.
The social factor conditions listed in the quote create almost a perfect storm for changing the demographics of a city towards one where black concentrations are going to be the factor which explodes the homicide rate and it is precisely these conditions which require a heavy handed police presence to keep a lid on things.
A good test for the question of whether economic deterioration is the key factor behind the rise in homicides is to find white communities which have suffered the same degree of economic deterioration as these cities which have experienced a rise in post-Ferguson homicides and see if there has been a commensurate rise in their homicide rate for it seems the police all across the nation are pulling back due to the scape-goating which is being focused on them.
* Why are crime and murder rates even higher in Jamaica which has almost no white population?
* How much of the post-crack decline in violence is due to the selective pressure of widespread violence that took thousands of criminally prone and violent people out of circulation? Could there be a similar effect after a few years of elevated violence in the cities mentioned above?
There are occasionally innocent bystanders involved, but in my experience most of the violence is pretty targeted, and it’s usually active rivals not some person who is only tangentially involved in drug or gang activity.
* My guess is that the early 1990s peak of bad guys shooting bad guys and bad guys going to prison for shooting bad guys contributed a lot to the late 1990s decline in crime. It also instructed the next generation that being a crack dealer wasn’t as great as it sounded in NWA tracks.
* Why should White cops risk their lives (and their families’ lives in the event of a media shitstorm) to prevent black criminals from killing other black criminals?
* What is the problem with criminals shooting other criminals? I am fine with the murder rate being very high in black areas so long as they stay out of my area. If they do not want the dwindling police resources in my city to stop them from murdering each other, I see no problem with that. I just wish we would airdrop birth control and set up more Planned Parenthood clinics. And this brings me to my favorite argument with progressive types.
I invariably get into the HBD theories and how African Americans on average have lower IQs, higher propensity for crime, lower time preference, etc. At some point a few of the people I argue with have came back at me with something to this affect: “So what if you are correct and all these things about blacks are true? What do you suggest we do about it? What is your solution?”
To that I replied “Nothing. There is nothing we as a society can do to change these genetic realities short of eugenics. However, on a personal level, you already build every aspect of your lives as if you believe these facts. You went to high end colleges with few blacks. You work in a company almost completely devoid of blacks. You spend enormous amounts of money to live in areas away from African Americans. Similarly, you will never send your kids to school with many African Americans. And lastly, you chronically avoid African American areas after dark or in contexts that would make you unsafe.
Essentially your lives are lived exclusively away from blacks. This is due to innate differences in intellectual capabilities and out of fear for your safety. That is reality you have chosen and your actions prove you believe what I say whether you want to admit it or not.”
* Sadly, they are not actually looking for the real causes.
If they were they would list these:
1. If some racial group(s) contain a greater proportion of individuals with a (genetic) propensity for violence,
2. And you signal that you will tolerate violence from them,
3. Lethal violence goes up.
* The First 48 should be required viewing for every American. It is not only real life-and-death human drama, but portrays law enforcement and crime in a way that news and analysis just cannot.
Among the many tidbits from that show (in no particular order):
– people will murder over tiny insults
– almost everything in a major city is caught on camera
– criminals do stupid things like attempt to sell back registered cell phones stolen from murder victims
– when criminals are caught reactions vary, but many view being sent to prison for life with the same amount of gravity that I view going for a routine dental exam
– white-on-white homicide is rarer but exactly what stereotypes would predict (domestic disputes and quarrels over women fueled by alcohol)
* The US Virgin Islands has one of the highest homicide rates in the world. High rates of violence are common in Sub-Saharan African descended populations all over the world. In contrast consider Chinese populations in places like Indonesia where the Chinese populations have been subject to often horrific persecution. Nevertheless the Chinese populations of Indonesia have low levels of violence.
* The Ferguson Effect is far more valid in the arena of the black undertow being agitated than it is in the level of law enforcement. What it means is that more cops and more enforcement won’t solve much, what it will take is for the natives to get restful. Or at the very least, for the (((media))) not to amp them up.
Crime rates did increase in St. Louis even before August 9, 2014, and it went up in 2013. But that does not disprove the Ferguson Effect, in fact, it proves it. It’s just that it shows that the Ferguson Effect deserves a different name. The reason for the increases in 2013 and 2014 had to do with another late teens young black man who was news about that time, and he’s suddenly news again: Trayvon Martin. The media whipped up Trayvonmania to help re-elect Obama, and that happened, and a combination of both leading into the start of 2013 was a cue to the undertow that they could start raging out. Trayvon’s father, incidentally, is a native of East St. Louis.
* I have to give Richard Rosenfeld credit for publicly changing his mind, since he’s going against the narrative and thus endangering future prospects for grants, employment, etc. He has some integrity and we see that less and less, especially at the highest level of government. I’m sure our first black president knows that a lot of the things he says about crime and policing are untrue, but he says them anyway. It would be great if he would take a break from chastising the police and mention that blacks should stop committing so much crime, should stop resisting arrest, and should stop bitching about the shooting of Michael Brown, who only got what was coming to him.
* During a recent appearance on the O’Reilly show Patrick Lynch, head of the NYPD Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (“PBA”) admitted that the adverse publicity that has resulted from events such as Ferguson has had what amounts to a chilling effect on the ability of his people to do their job. Is there any surprise that the criminal element in these neighborhoods has become emboldened.
By the way, I notice that Detroit is not among the top ten cities with the largest percentage increase in homicides. This suggests that Detroit has either suddenly became peaceful or that the crime statisticians have simply thrown in the towel and don’t even bother keeping statistics anymore.
* We’ve always had various studies throughout the years to put blacks under the microscope to see why they are the way they are. It’s usually whites trying out their pet theories such as them suffering from collective lead poisoning and so on. Whenever the occasional black gets consulted it’s usually also standard fare: white society is to blame and send mo’ money. A long time ago an old timer explained it to me this way: ‘they is what they is, they does what they does’. Well, it’s true, this is what they are and this is what they do. It’s just that whites don’t care for that, tribal warfare doesn’t mesh well with a modern society so they’re always agonizing over how to turn blacks into carbon-copy whites. Can’t be done.

* I know you’re being facetious but they’re really on the horns of a dilemma: a) accept aggressive policing that will make life safer for the vast majority of blacks and save measurable young black lives, while accepting that from time to time a black – usually in the commission of a felony – will be killed by (probably white) police; or, b) persist in exposing police to infamy for properly doing their jobs. The Shaun King best of both worlds solution is unobtainable because he wants to roast police for doing their jobs when there is a bad outcome arising from black criminality. White cops (or cops of any race for that matter) offering their lives up for the sake of racial harmony in deadly conflicts with violent black criminals is probably not in the cards either.
The reality is that the toothpaste can’t be put back in the tube at this point because the BLM agitation and crucifixion of good cops doing their jobs is coming from the Eye of Soros, and it will not abate regardless of whether it is responsible for the deaths of black men because it is politically useful.
* I think we ought to go one step further and just segregate the entire white population. Make them live in their own towns, attend their own schools and work at their own businesses.
* Yeah, that’ll teach’em. Make them live with only other white people. See how they like that. No asians, no blacks, no browns. Only white folks. None of that vibrant diversity that makes the rest of the USA so enjoyable and prosperous. Truly this punishment fits the crime.
* I’m of the opinion that the 1994 Violent Crime Act was largely responsible for the decrease in violent crime – Federalizing crimes and providing mandatory minimums (30 year prison terms in Federal Court where they’re served) meant taking criminal All Stars off the field for the remainder of their careers. Also, the Federal penitentiary system allows you to house a NYC armed crack dealer in Terre Haute, Indiana where he can’t easily run his business from within the jail. That probably also had a similar effect that concerted law enforcement pressure had on organized crime – the more able and cunning criminals having been caught and incarcerated, their successors usually dip in quality making them easier to catch. You do this enough and the criminal organization that remains is a shadow of its former self. In a few generations, instead of controlling Union pension funds and skimming from casinos, they’re stealing box trucks full of frozen turkeys and women’s polyester sweatpants.
Charts of violent crime clearly show a peak in and around 1994 and significant reduction thereafter.
* And why is all black Haiti such a total basket case? It has virtually zero whites.
Why do blacks in Canada and England have the same high rates of violence and crime when there was no history of slavery or segregation in either country?

Anything below $950 keeps the crime a misdemeanor — and likely means the thieves face no pursuit and no punishment, say retailers and law enforcement officials. Large retailers including Safeway, Target, Rite Aid and CVS pharmacies say shoplifting increased at least 15 percent, and in some cases, doubled since voters approved Proposition 47 and ended the possibility of charging shoplifting as a felony with the potential for a prison sentence.
If a paternity test proves this Dindu Nuffin is Prince’s biological son, it certainly adds fuel to the theory that the vast majority of affluent Blacks have family members who are part of the Black underclass, just like in The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. Even Hussein Obama has family members who are part of the Black underclass.
Not too many affluent Blacks come from 100 percent blue blood wealthy families.
On the flip side most affluent Whites do not have family members who are part of the White underclass. Not as many Fresh Prince Of Bel Air cases among affluent Whites.
* Illustrious gatekeepers of our reigning narrative – those socially pure, spiritually corrosive lies we’re supposed to pretend to believe – take another hit. Media and academia really needed a winner here, and – POWEE! They certainly, certainly could have used a good, old fashioned See, Conservatives Really ARE Nazis study this year of all others. * How does Orange County remain a Republican stronghold when Whites are the Minority?
It is slightly democratic voting for president, so not really a stronghold. Half the hispanics are not citizens and the half that are citizens are too young to vote or not registered or not interested.
Asians vote at very low rates too, and when they do OC Asians are fairly Republican since they assimilate toward the local elite, which in OC is white Republican. A pretty high percentage of OC Asians are Christians from Vietnam, Korea, or Philippines.
You combine all these factors and OC’s 44% white population are probably 75% of actual voters, or even 80% in off-elections.
For local offices, suburban so-cal whites block vote for Republicans when the dems nominate a non-white. Most of the white out-migration has been in the bottom half of the economic spectrum, and partially replaced with well educated whites. So you end up with a white core that votes in very high numbers. I am a permanent vote by mail voter so I never miss an election.
* A classic example of hispanics in California not voting is that the Compton mayor and city counsel are still 100% black, even though the city as of 2010 65% hispanic, 32% black, and 1% white. By now it could easily be 70% hispanic.
* I go out of my way to not reveal where public figures live precisely. For example, I rewrote a posting about news stories about Carlos Slim putting his New York mansion up for sale for $80 million to reveal only that it was in Manhattan, even though it’s one of the most prominent addresses in America.
My thinking on this goes back to John Lennon’s assumption that it was safe in the late 1970s to mention in interviews that he lived in The Dakota.
* The biggest single year jump in homicides in recent decades before 2015 was 12% in 1990 at the peak of the Crack Wars, so 16+% in 2015 is huge (although that’s only being measured in 56 big cities, so nationally it’s probably a little lower).
* A friend works at Old Navy and says pretty much what this article says. Thieves make a move on her store every freaking day. Jump and run, hide it in the bag, pull it off the rack and say you’re returning something without a receipt, conceal it in the bottom of a stroller. The employees are not allowed to confront and the cops are called constantly.
I just went to a neighborhood meeting about some local crap and I have to say I feel sorry for the officers. They have to deal with the same criminals and bad actors over and over again. Then, the homeowners are bitching at them to get rid of these people. Really they’re caught in a vice squeeze by the liberals in charge and the citizens who want good neighborhoods.
Question: are there any people out there who want law and order as well as welfare handouts? I don’t mean the old folks entitlements. I mean the food stamps, medicaid, cheap housing, WIC, EITC, and such. I understand why people want free stuff, but I don’t get why they want criminals roaming around and crappy neighborhoods. Maybe they’re the same group of people.
