Which Place Is More Sexist: The Middle East Or Latin America?

Lourdes Garcia-Navarro writes for NPR:

A semi-naked woman in a sequined Carnival costume. A veiled woman with only her eyes showing in a niqab. Two stereotypes of two vastly different regions — Latin America and the Middle East.

On the surface, these two images couldn’t be more diametrically opposed. What could the two have in common, right? What a woman wears — or what she doesn’t wear, in Brazil’s case — is often interpreted as a sign of her emancipation. The veil, for many, is a symbol of female oppression; the right to wear a bikini, one of liberation.

As a woman and a foreigner who lived in Baghdad and Cairo and worked throughout the Middle East for years, I always felt the need to dress modestly and respectfully. Frankly, my recent move back to Latin America was initially a relief. Brazil is the land where less is more — and it was wonderful to put on whatever I wanted.

But underneath the sartorial differences, the Middle East and Latin America’s most famously immodest country both impose their own burdens on women in the way they are treated and perceived.

On a recent balmy afternoon, I was sitting at a seafront kiosk watching Brazil’s carnival coverage on the biggest broadcaster here, GLOBO. Suddenly, a naked woman popped onto the screen during a commercial break. She was wearing nothing. Literally nothing except a smile and some body glitter. Called the “globeleza,” she is the symbol of GLOBO’s festival coverage, and she appears at every commercial break.

Later programming showed a contest where women from various Samba schools — all of them black — were judged on their dancing and appearance by a panel that was all white. They all had their measurements read out for the crowd. But when one woman said she was studying at one of Brazil’s premier petrochemical departments to eventually work in the oil and gas industry, the male judge smirked in surprise.

And that’s the thing about Brazil: It has a female president, and women are well-represented in the work force. This isn’t Saudi Arabia, where women cannot drive, or Afghanistan under the Taliban, where women could not study.

And yet it is one of the most dangerous countries to be female in.

Statistics show that about every two hours a woman is murdered in Brazil, a country with the seventh highest rate of violence against women in the world.

This juxtaposition of sex and violence isn’t new, according to Rosana Schwartz, a historian and sociologist at Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Sao Paulo. Brazil imported more slaves than any other country in the Americas, and slavery was only abolished in 1888.

“The female slaves were used as sexual objects to initiate the master’s son’s sexuality or to satisfy him. And the result has been that until today, Brazilian women are seen in a sexist way, in a more sexualized way, because she was used as a sexual object for so long,” Schwartz says.

The legacy still affects women of every class and race here.

The Guardian:

Hyper sexual Carnival atmosphere has a dark side for Rio’s women

This notorious festival encourages the objectification of women

…The ‘sexier’ you look the better; a big butt, generous breasts and flat stomach are practically mandatory – especially for the drum queens who dance in front of the samba bands, keeping them motivated with their dancing and yes, their bodies.

Let’s shoot straight: this is objectification of women in its truest form. Using a woman as a figurehead to keep up the spirits of male troops following behind is simply using her. Complete nudity is acceptable, sometimes desirable. But even the least revealing outfits for this position are as small as thong bikinis.

No doubt dancing and walking with a smile on your face for an hour and a half is hard work, a way to celebrate culture and Carnival, and even perhaps a way of feeling empowered, but all that time the woman is dancing she is seen as an object. Her measurements have to be right, perfect, sometimes even “fixed” and inflated by surgeries. She must be an incarnation of the ideal.

Every year the main broadcasting network in Brazil hosts a popular election to choose the Globeleza – a combination of the word ‘Globo’ (the name of the channel) and ‘beauty’ (beleza). The chosen woman is shown dancing naked during advert breaks until the end of Carnival. This is a long-time tradition, and the fact that it’s endorsed by the most watched channel in the country is worrying.

From early childhood, girls watch this nudity on TV as if it’s the norm, as if it’s the highest form of success.

And as for little Brazilian boys the dream is to become a footballer, the dream for little girls is to become a drum queen or a Globeleza.

This idea that women are objects combined with the free-for-all environment of Carnival can have ugly results. During the weeks of the party there is an increase in sexual violence and hate crimes, according to the Observatory of Racial Discrimination, Violence Against Women and LGBT 2012.

There were 429 reported cases of racism, sexism and homophobia in the 2012 Carnival in Salvador, Bahia – an increase from 2011 when 350 cases were recorded. 153 of 2012’s incidents were violence and abuse towards women, bringing out the thinly veiled misogyny that is deeply entrenched in the Brazilian society.

When men approach women on a normal night out in Brazil, it is typically in a belligerent and sometimes invasive fashion; in Carnival it can be even worse. Men often feel up women as if it’s nothing and kiss them against their will, because they feel they have the right to. Perhaps they consider it a joke, or an expression of their “freedom” but this behaviour can escalate to something far more serious. In 2012, the number of rapes in the state of Rio de Janeiro grew by 24 per cent in comparison to the previous year. From January to November 5,542 rapes were reported, in comparison to 4,467 in 2011.

Though this increase might be explained by more women reporting sexual crimes than before, the figure is nevertheless scary. And if this high number only counts the reported rape, who knows how high the real figure is?

Carnival is meant to be a party for all, but it is also, unfortunately, an opportunity for abuse. There is little education or government action to counter it, and women are treated like objects left and right. Sexual violence is an ugly angle from which to consider the biggest party in the world, but it is also true and should be pointed out every year so that maybe one day the party will be safe for every gender, race and sexual orientation.

“Globo TV, I am not one of your nêgas”: Afro-Brazilian woman reacts to latest TV show that reduces black women to their sexuality

Note from BW of Brazil: Sound the alarm, for there’s another fire brewing in Brazil! Once again, the object scorn is the long time nemesis of the Afro-Brazilian community, the television giant Globo TV network. Here at BW of Brazil, since the beginning, we have given example after example of how the image of black women and black Brazilians in general are minimized, stereotyped and made to look utterly ridiculous for the whole country to see; in fact, as Globo’s reach is international, these consistent spectacles are put on for the WHOLE WORLD to see! Brazil’s extremely Eurocentric, blond obsessed media has always sought to keep black women in the “places” that Brazilian society has traditionally reserved for them: the kitchen or the bedroom. Every year, we see naked brown flesh put on display in the one and only time of year that black women are visible: Carnaval. We’ve seen the horrid black faced portrayals. We saw the contest in which black women competed to dance naked on television. We’ve seen them play the secondary role in near silence even in the kitchen, which is supposedly their domain.

And this is every time they are seen at all.

One study recently showed that Afro-Brazilian women only made up about 4% of the protagonists in Brazilian films. And we also know that Afro-Brazilians in general are rarely ever more than 10% of any cast of Brazil’s decades-long success run with the ever popular novelas (soap operas). We’ve seen stereotypes of black women sexuality used to sell beer and we’ve seen campaigns that have re-enforced the Brazilian racist idea that natural black hair is bad. Well, nothing’s changed. As a matter of fact, the Globo TV network is upping the stakes with a new TV series that plays directly into the national stereotype of the hyper-sexual negra or mulata. In fact, the show is actually called Sexo e as nêgas, which could be translated as something like “sex and the negresses”. This new program which hasn’t even debuted yet is the precise reason that black women called for a more dignified representation in the mass media. The media continues to ignore this demand, so black women are coming out to express their outrage.

Below is short intro to what’s shaping up to becoming a battle; stay tuned as we will continue the developments on this latest slap in the face of the black community!

Hey Globo, I’m not one of your nêgas!

By Laila Oliveira

The feeling of indignation made me reflect on this constant and secular sexualization that is imputed upon us black women; an image that has been sustained for decades by the Brazilian literature, the media and by songs in the cultural industry responsible for the cultural construction of stereotypes in the popular imagination such as the hot negra, the moreninha (little brown girl) of the color of sin or the mulata tipo exportação (mulata of the exportation type). I almost fell backwards to learn the newest work of Globo (TV) art, another blow of the racist media, the production of the series created by Miguel Falabella, Sexo e As Negas (Sex and the Negresses) parodying the famous Sex and the City.

The series still has no release date, and according to the author, the version will take place in Cordovil, in Rio de Janeiro. It will consist of a quartet of carioca (Rio natives) friends composed of a maid, a cook, a worker and a seamstress who will experience dilemmas and obstacles to achieve their true goal which is the conquest of a sexual partner.

R. Venturelli, American Renaissance, November 5, 2015:

For many Americans, Brazil means Rio de Janeiro, Carnival, pretty women, and a mixed-race land of no racial tension. This makes Brazil a potential model for the United States: Immigration from the Third World will enrich us and miscegenation will make us one. In fact, Brazil is a nation of low average intelligence, very high crime rates, an aversion to work, and widespread corruption. It is precisely the multi-racial nightmare we must avoid.

The average IQ in Brazil is 87, which is lower than Mexico’s 88.[1] Fifty percent of college students are said to be functionally illiterate–they cannot understand even a basic newspaper or magazine article.[2] With 50,000 murders a year, Brazil comes close to having the highest murder rate in the world: 25.2 per 100,000. For South Africa, the figure is 31; for the United States, it is five.[3]

The Portuguese word for work (trabalho) used to mean “instrument of torture,” and as soon as they have the means, Brazilians do as little of it as possible. They hire people to put gas in their cars. In restaurants, waiters literally stand at your table to cut slices of pizza and put them on your plate. Maids do dishes, wash clothes, cook, and help children with homework.

Corruption is endemic. A common expression is jeitinho brasileiro or the “little Brazilian way,” which means the deeply rooted tradition of taking advantage of others and breaking the rules. Politicians reflect their society, so huge corruption scandals are almost daily news. Brazil’s racial history explains much of its national character…

It was common for the sons of slave owners to have their sexual initiation with slave women. This may be the origin of the sexual promiscuity common in Brazil, though actual marriage among slave owners was usually with whites.

Youthful escapades produced a mulatto class, which often led to a rise in the mother’s status and sometimes emancipation for the children. Mulattos naturally tried to draw distinctions between themselves and enslaved blacks. At the same time, mulattas were seen as much more sexually available than the few, usually Catholic and conservative European women. This is the origin of the almost cult-like carnival symbol of the sensuous, naked mulatto woman.

After independence from Portugal, the ruling class decided that the country would be better if it were whiter. Upper-class Brazilians were embarrassed by foreign travelers who, noting the huge number of slaves and heavily-mixed free population, described Rio de Janeiro as an African city. However, slavery was a huge obstacle to European immigration. Poor whites could not compete with unpaid slaves, who worked in all types of industries and even as low-ranking police officers.

Brazil’s economy was dependent on slaves, so abolition would cause chaos and anger the slave masters. Emperor Dom Pedro II therefore decided to end slavery slowly. He abolished the slave trade in 1850 and tried to promote European immigration. It was not long thereafter that approximately 10,000 Confederates fled Reconstruction, settling the town of Americana in São Paulo state, where they hold annual celebrations of their Confederate heritage to this day…

The Brazilian Republic continued the racial policies of the Empire, importing large numbers of Europeans to make Brazil whiter and replace black labor. Indentured servants worked for a fixed period before being granted land. At first, most immigrants came from Portugal, Spain, Italy and Germany. Later, a more limited number of Slavs and a considerable number of Japanese arrived.

The demographic transformation was remarkable. According to the 1940 census, 63.47 percent of the population identified as white–up from 38.17 percent in the first census, taken in 1872…

For the first time, there were enough women immigrants to make endogamy common. Immigrants married and lived among themselves, retaining their folkways and languages. There was no dominant culture and therefore no assimilation to a larger whole. Brazil was still a broad geographical area with little cohesion and a weak federal government. States had almost complete autonomy and even imposed tariffs against each other…

European immigrants came in such numbers that the Portuguese elite were quickly outnumbered. They may also have been less competitive than the newcomers because of many generations of inbreeding. This decline explains why there are so few Portuguese surnames in the Brazilian upper class today. Instead, Portuguese names such as “Silva” and “dos Santos” are more common among non-whites and the poor.

This is especially striking in the South, which was sparsely populated, and where the demographic change was almost complete. Many small municipalities in the South still recognize Italian or German as an official language. In the 1940 census, the three states of the South–Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and Santa Catarina–respectively had populations that were 86.6, 88.7, and 94.4 percent white…

In 1930, Getúlio Vargas took power in a coup that became known as the 1930 Revolution, and implemented nationalist measures designed to turn Brazil into a unified nation. He wanted to break up ethnic enclaves of European immigrants who hired and married each other, and refused to learn Portuguese.[13] He established ethnic quotas on immigrants to stop the growth of these enclaves, and required that employers ensure that their workforces were at least 60 percent native-born Brazilians. These measures effectively ended the era of mass immigration…

To promote a national identity, Vargas limited the autonomy of the states, ordered all state flags burned, and promoted cultural unification. He forbade the use of languages other than Portuguese in public, banned ethnic clubs and schools, and “Brazilianized” surnames and names of institutions in the hope of forcing Europeans and Japanese to integrate rather than maintain their own communities.

Vargas’s measures were inspired at least in part by the policies of the Axis powers, with which he had good relations.[14] Ironically, his nationalist attempts to unify the country damaged his relations with Italy, Germany and Japan. There were many Hitler Youth chapters in Brazil, as well as Italian clubs that worked to preserve national loyalty, and some members opted to return to Europe rather than integrate.

Vargas continued the eugenic policies of the previous republic and prevented the promotion of Army officers with clear African ancestry. Vargas celebrated such things as Race Day and Fatherland Week, and noted in a radio speech on September 7, 1938, that:

A rapid solution needs to be found for the question of strengthening the race, one that guarantees the cultural and eugenic preparation of the generations to come. . . The celebrations of the Fatherland and the Race must therefore show beyond any doubt our struggle to elevate the cultural and eugenic level of the youth. . . For a united Brazil, for a great Brazil.[15]

There is an interesting anecdote from shortly after President Vargas’s coup d’état. Spanish nobles of the same name asked the Pope to check baptism records to see whether Mr. Vargas was a relation. He asked that the research not be carried out for fear of what might be found in his family tree: “In Brazil we always expose ourselves to the risk of ending up in the jungles [being part Indian] or the kitchen [being part black].”[16]

There was a strong fascist movement called Integralismo, which arose outside of Vargas’s control and promoted the idea of a “Brazilian race.” Its more radical elements argued that genuine Brazilians were a mixture of whites, blacks, and Indians, and that only complete mixture would bring forth the true Brazilian race. The movement did not last long, but it influenced many patriotic Brazilians, and its ideas of mixture remained influential.

Despite Vargas’s racial nationalism, his attempts at imposing cultural unity stopped the flow of European immigrants, and the percentage of whites declined after the 1940 census. As of the 2010 census, only 47.7 percent of the Brazilian population calls itself white.

Teen girl raped by 5 Syrian migrants

Why do many Jewish groups push the West to take in more Muslims?

The Sun: A TEENAGE girl has claimed she was gang raped at a care home by five young Syrian migrants.

The vulnerable 18-year-old victim was subjected to a harrowing five-hour ordeal.

She was attacked last weekend at a supervised care facility in Gillingham, Kent.

The girl was there along with young migrants who were housed under legal obligation by the local authority.

A source said: “She is deeply distressed by the ordeal. It was horrific.

“The victim thinks there were five attackers. The issue is what were they doing there in the first place?

“She is a vulnerable teenager and was under the same roof as some of these suspects.”

Four youths, all claiming to be under 18, have been arrested so far. Two have been charged with rape.

Ann Coulter: Since GOPs love to talk Israel, how @ telling us if they approve of Israel’s AGGRESSIVE self-deportation policy?

NYT: Israel’s Chilly Reception for African Asylum Seekers

WP: Israeli government to refugees: Go back to Africa or go to prison

HOLOT, Israel — As Europe struggles to stem a spring flood of migrants from Africa and the Middle East trying to cross a deadly Mediterranean Sea, Israel has begun to toughen its stance toward refugees, telling unwanted Africans here they must leave now or face an indefinite stay in prison.

Israeli authorities are sending letters to the first of 45,000 Eritrean and Sudanese refugees, informing them they have 30 days to accept Israel’s offer of $3,500 in cash and a one-way ticket home or to an unnamed third country in Africa, or face incarceration at Saharonim prison.

Israeli leaders have proclaimed that their tough approach — building a fence along the country’s border, denying work permits for illegal migrants, forcing them into a detention center in the desert — may ultimately save lives by dissuading migrants from attempting a perilous journey. Critics of the Israeli policy counter that a country built by refugees should be more accepting of those fleeing war, poverty and oppression…

Before Israel began cracking down on African migrants a few years ago, the Africans were highly visible in bustling cities, working in kitchens and doing menial labor. There are still neighborhoods in south Tel Aviv filled with Africans. Many Israelis complained they were being “invaded.”

Israel is a nation built by Jewish refugees, and those with Jewish ancestry are encouraged, even courted, to move here and provided wide-ranging assistance. A million Russian speakers came in the 1990s, and Jews from Ethiopia continue to arrive each month.

But fearful that a wave of impoverished Africans, mostly Muslims from Sudan and Christians from Eritrea, would overwhelm the Jewish nature of the state, Israel spent more than $350 million to build a 140-mile fence along its entire border with Egypt.

Undocumented migrants to Israel are called “infiltrators” by the Israeli government.

The steel barrier, completed in 2013, stopped illegal entry cold: More than 10,000 Africans arrived in 2012; today almost no one attempts the trip.

The fence also shut down human traffickers in the Sinai Peninsula who had become increasingly sadistic, with refugees describing how they were imprisoned in “torture camps” where the Bedouin smugglers raped women and burned captives with molten plastic to extort relatives to send more money to free them.

Comments at WP:

* For SHAME that they should be able to control who enters their country…

* After working with illegal immigrants in CA for 15 yrs. my once liberal viewpoint has shifted radically and I sadly sympathize with Israel. Attitudes toward procreation seem to be similar to those of Mexico and Central America, based on a 60 Minutes interview with refugees fleeing to Sicily and Italy. A woman was pregnant with several young children and the father was wailing about caring for them. Come on. Conditions in their country didn’t arise overnight. One has to ask why they continued to have kids when things were so bad and until they could relocate and become self-reliant. The same situation exists among my students. They fled poverty and cartel violence in their countries and see nothing wrong with producing five kids but do nothing to settle their score with the DHS and become legal (I have two such students in a class at the moment).

Those refugees with kids unfortunately must face the consequences of their actions. I think Israel’s being generous in offering those funds and they should take the deal and settle in a country that’s agreed to take them in. In the meantime, education about population control is in order.

* Maybe Israel’s stance on refugees will start the rest of the world doing something about ISIS and the rest of the terrorists. No body can continue to take refugees without having problems somewhere. Europe is moving in the same direction, but it may take them a lot longer to arrive at the same conclusion.

* Gimme free stuff. Let me in. You are 7M Jews with a high standard surrounded by 500M hostile Arabs with a very low standard (other than the oil kingdoms). But we Africans are 1B poverty stricken people (plus another 100M or so middle class and well off folks on top) with a very very very very (4x) low standard of living. Let’s equalize and let all of us in with you in Israel and Europe! That we’ll all have a very very very (3x) low standard together! I mean, African “refugee” migration has worked out so well in literally the most tolerant places on earth such as Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland…

* I agree with Israel’s immigration policies regarding African refugees.

I would add, however, that repeat offenders who come back AFTER serving their prison sentences should be transported to an uninhabited island in the middle of some large body of water and dropped off there with basic tools for survival and told that any return to Israel would be an automatic death penalty.

Deportation is somewhat of a joke and is done over and over and over again. It is costly and ineffective if not followed up by dire consequences at some point in the process. If the dire consequences are not there, imprisonment and deportation becomes synonymous with the proverbial revolving door.

* European Jews are being harassed and killed by Muslims.
Israel doesn’t want a bunch of Muslim immigrants flooding their country. Sounds like a reasonable decision to me.

Plus. Name even one primarily Muslim country in that part of the world that is extending a helping hand to their fellow Muslims.

* Israel can do whatever it wants to Palestinians, to immigrants, to Muslims..

Just don’t understand why we still bother giving Israel over $3 billion a year plus our best weaponry.

Their version of democracy is not aligned to ours, and they do not listen to us.

Let them swim on their own.

ABC: ‘I Call It Natural’: What One White Separatist Claims Would Make a Better America

ABC NEWS: At first glance, Matt Heimbach looks like a friendly neighbor, an always-smiling, 22-year-old college graduate who goes to church, and loves country music and drinking beer with his buddies.

But Heimbach is a white separatist who believes that the United States would be a better place if it were divided and went back to segregation. He has been called the future of organized hate in this country.

“Loving one’s people is natural,” he said. “Every other group is allowed to love their race for the best interest of their race. There’s no reason why whites shouldn’t.”

When asked if he considered himself a racist, Heimbach said, “Sure. So what? I call it natural.”

Last year, Heimbach launched a nationwide college recruitment campaign to spread his beliefs and has been on a cross-country trip to form all-white student unions on college campuses. His recruitment efforts started at his alma mater Towson University, and has plans to visit George Mason University in Virginia, Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind., and American University in Washington, D.C. this spring.

He is tapping into a growing and frightening discontent in the U.S. In the last decade, the number of hate groups has nearly doubled from 602 to 1,007, according to Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

“The election of Barack Obama … has ginned up the anger and fury out there,” Potok said. “The fact that a black man was elected president, not once but twice, has merely added to that fury.”

Heimbach was raised in a middle-class Maryland suburb. His parents are schoolteachers who, Heimbach admits, did not teach him to be racist. Today, he is estranged from his family.

“People always say, ‘Well, he was raised like that.’ Well, no, I wasn’t. I was raised [in a] moderate Catholic home,” he said. “My parents are … very, very moderate.”

Heimbach said he loved history and the Bible, and in his reading both, he found a place of superiority. In high school, he played a Confederate soldier in Civil War battle reenactments. It’s those days of slavery that Heimbach calls the good old days.

“We would be a lot better off if the South would have won,” he said.

He fears white heterosexual Christians have fallen prey, as he puts it. Many white separatists note that U.S. Census trends show whites being a minority by 2043. Heimbach attributed the issues white people face today to the slaughter of Native Americans centuries ago.

“The cataclysmic end to this empire is fast approaching,” he said. “Was what happened to the Native Americans horrible? Yeah. But that’s what’s happening to whites now in this country.”

Heimbach is far from alone in these beliefs. This year, he was a speaker at a “Stormfront” convention, a sort of annual retreat for white supremacists, where he met David Duke, a former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and former Louisiana state representative. He has since appeared as a guest on Duke’s Internet radio show.

Heimbach sees the future of America as a place of extreme segregation “where there is no ill will, there is no hostility.”

“We can still trade and get a visa,” he said. A visa to visit, in his world, white Christians in the South, Jews in New York, blacks in Detroit, just to name a few of his examples.

Of course, Heimbach faces a lot of angry scrutiny for being so outspoken about his views. When he and his friend, Klansman Thomas Buhls went on a recruiting trip to Indiana University in Bloomington, a group of student protestors went after them with water hoses. It was at the same university where, a decade earlier, white supremacist Benjamin Nathaniel Smith went on a two-day shooting spree, eventually killing himself.

“When you become the most hated man on campus, that does put a strain on relationships, both romantic and family,” Heimbach said. “It’s one of those weird things where people hate me because I’m kind of like a bogeyman.”

Dennis Prager: All Trends In Jewish Life Are Negative

Dennis Prager had the most pessimistic response in Commentary magazine’s recent 69-person symposium on the future of the Jews.

Generally speaking, I admire Prager for sneaking in more truth (aka expanding the Overton Window) than any other talk show host.

Dennis wrote:

Forgive me, dear reader, but virtually all the trends are negative.
1. To understand Jewish life outside of Israel, it is crucial to first understand the most important development of the last 100 years: The most dynamic religion in the world has not been Christianity, nor Islam, nor even Mormonism, let alone Judaism. It has been a secular religion, leftism and its offshoots, such as environmentalism, feminism, socialism and egalitarianism.
Far more Jews outside of Israel (and some inside Israel) embrace leftism as their value system than Judaism. While individual Jews of all backgrounds have resisted leftism, the only Jewish group to do so has been Orthodoxy. And modern Orthodoxy has not been immune.
Most American Jews are far more influenced by, and far more frequently attend, the secular left-wing temple — the university — than their local Jewish temple; and far more seek guidance from The New York Times and other left-wing media than from the Torah.
Yes, there are left-wing Jews who are religiously affiliated. Indeed, they dominate non-Orthodox Jewish denominations. But their Jewish future is not bright. Most young Jews want authentic leftism, and that usually precludes synagogue attendance, as leftism is radically secular.
2. Israel will have to choose between doing what the world demands and becoming increasingly loathed and isolated. Either choice bodes poorly. The world wants Israel to give Palestinians an independent state. I have always supported a two-state “solution,” but an independent Palestinian state at this time can lead only to another haven for violent Islam, which would mean constant attacks on Israelis and the probable end of Jordan as an independent state.
3. Europe will have to choose between civil war and becoming increasingly Islamicized. The acceptance of more than a million Muslim-Arab refugees from Syria, Libya and elsewhere — added to the 20 million Muslims already in the European Union — will only hasten this outcome. This will likely mean no more Jews in Western Europe.
4. One of the great falsehoods of our time is that “Islam is a religion of peace.” From Muhammad’s time until today, Islam has almost never voluntarily been a religion of peace. How many people know, for example, that during their thousand-year rule over India, Muslims killed between 60 and 80 million Hindus? India doesn’t talk about this, because the Indian government fears Muslim-Hindu violence. And few in the West talk about it because Western academics and others on the left fear that talking about it would divert attention from their anti-Western narrative.
Needless to say, the ascendance of a virile Islam bodes poorly for Jews. The violent end of Christendom in the Arab world — which bothers Western elites considerably less than carbon emissions — is what a vast number of Muslims seek for the Jews living in the Arab world, namely the Jews of Israel.
5. Outside the United States, Christianity has rarely been good for the Jews. The Christians (cultural and theological) who founded America and led the country from its inception have constituted a unique blessing to the Jews. But most American Jews, consistent with their left-wing faith, have joined and often led the left’s battle to weaken American Christianity. These foolish people think that a godless, Christianity-free America will be good for the Jews. They do not understand that America has been a unique blessing to Jews precisely because it has been the one truly Judeo-Christian country.
So, then, there is little reason for optimism. Will Jews be around in 50 years? Of course, they will. There may well be a Chabad House on the moon. But the purpose of Jewish life is not to survive, any more than the purpose of any of our own lives is to survive. Survival is a necessity, not a purpose.
The purpose of the Chosen People is to bring the world to the God of the Torah, more specifically, the God of the Ten Commandments. Unless we do, the future is bleak. But who will do this? The only vibrant Jewish group, the Orthodox, is still — Chabad and some Orthodox individuals notwithstanding — committed to Jewish insularity, preserving the shtetl, and to religious laws designed to keep Jews insulated from non-Jews.
Is there a solution?
Yes. Above all, Jews need to abandon secularism and leftism and adopt God-based, Torah-based values — even without necessarily becoming Orthodox — and influence the world to live by the Ten Commandments. Imagine what would happen to Jewry and to society at large if Jewish professors abandoned leftism and embraced ethical monotheism.
Admittedly, there are few examples of God-centered, Torah-based non-Orthodox Jews. But unless this begins to happen, and unless the Orthodox become as preoccupied with bringing the world to the God of Sinai as they are with what’s kosher for Pesach, the future looks bleak.

Here are the important truths I believe Prager is touching on:

* There’s no evidence that non-Orthodox Judaism can flourish. The only method of Judaism that perpetuates itself is Orthodox Judaism.

* The prospects for Israel’s survival as a Jewish state are poor.

* Europe will have to halt and turn back the Islamic invasion or lose itself.

* Islam is incompatible with the West.

* Strong national and religious identities are dangerous for Jews living in gentile countries. What’s good for Jews, according to organized Jewry, is watered down gentile identities, which is bad for gentiles. Different groups have different interests. Jews and gentiles are fated for conflict and tragedy.

JJ: Wasserman Schultz: Iranian nuclear threat has been neutralized

I have some thoughts on this story.

* Iran was never a threat to the United States so long as the United States did not commit troops to the Middle East and threaten Iran. The more America and other countries threaten Iran, the more incentive Iran has to develop nukes.

* Nuclear weapons are not generally regarded by IR experts as an offensive threat.

* Iran has not invaded a country since the 18th Century. Nobody ranks their military as powerful as Israel’s, nor in the world’s top 20.

* You never know what people will do. You never know what a country will do. All you can do is assess their offensive capability and their incentives.

* All peoples either expand in power or they start dying.

WP: Yale’s president tells minority students: ‘We failed you’

From the WP comments:

* Yikes! What are these students majoring in? Insane Hypersensitivity Studies? I thought Yale had eliminated Smug Entitlement 101 as a required course.

I feel offended. Apparently, everyone reading this message (or at least Yale’s Dean) must appease me for that reason alone.

* Let’s see, a Frat is alleged to have not allowed in black girls, an allegation that has been refuted, but yet there is a Black Student Alliance on campus. Anyone notice anything here. I’m surprised those girls were not excoriated by the BSA for mingling with the ‘oppressor’ class.

Not only does much of this sound like an attempt to censor speech and control thought, but also a further attempt to extract special privileges. Not enough mental health care and such should be specifically geared to blacks. Well who would staff these clinics, better not be white professionals, maybe they could import Louis Farrakhan to run them.

Maybe all whites should be thrown out and then this could be a blacks only college. Ah but we already have those and these black students have rejected them.

But here we have these idiots and apprentice thugs first surrounding a Dean and later a college master, ironically questioning him but also shouting him down (that sounds rational and effective doesn’t it) and then they have the gall to claim they are harassed and intimidated.

And these jerks belong to a racist group that lobbies and threatens college personnel for privileges and rights. And just imagine their screams and crocodile tears if there was such as a White Student Alliance, which here seems terribly necessary.

Sounds like another gutless college self loathing idiot about to cave in to a hateful minority. Woe to Yale and the ghosts of all those who fought for liberty and free speech in this country.

* The white students should get together and demand a white student center along with a white dean sponsor who could listen to them whine.

* There is nothing in this article that deals with any issues of “safety”…are people “unsafe” because certain people weren’t allowed in a party? Of course not. Get a grip people, sheesh.

* Chronic appeasement begets a sense of entitlement. Offensive Halloween costumes? Hurtful e-mails? Not exactly our greatest generation.

* And now you are alienating the legal citizens and caucasians. How about judge students on their ability to perform the work in the class instead of by worrying about their color or nationality? Is that too much to ask, judge by accomplishments? So sick of a few getting their voice out there. Stop voting for liberals, vote for common sense, and do not vote for legacy or incumbent politicians, even if you have to move party lines.

* Appeasement of swaddled children.

* Can I slap some of those people? They are squandering the time they have at Yale! God knows if I was given such an opportunity I wouldnt being crying about some jerk fratbros not letting me into their party cause Im not white! YOU ARE AT YALE! Get a good degree, get a sweet job, and applaud yourself. Dont waste it trying to party with SAE!

* What a group of fools. the mere fact that this Dean even legitimized their infantile arguments is appalling. They should be verbally smacked down in no uncertain terms, as befits idiots who have idiotic ideas. The email in question was actually a model of liberal tolerance and fairness, the fact that it was offensive to them speaks volumes about the coddling of infantile students today.

Does America Have A ‘Deep State’?

I’m surprised that this analyst’s anti-Israel columns haven’t gotten him banned from the MSM.

When was the last time premiere political scientists John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt were published in the MSM (and the NYT)?

Philip Giraldi, ex-CIA officer, writes for the NYT:

But every country has a deep state of some kind. “The Establishment,” as it’s been called in the United States, where it evolved from the Washington-New York axis of national security officials and financial services executives. They are said to know what is “best” for the country and to act accordingly, no matter who sits in the White House.

From the comments at NYT:

* The American Deep State seems to consist, very disproportionately, of Jewish Zionists. Netanyahu receives absurd standing ovations and billions for war crimes and violating multiple UN resolutions. Few dare oppose AIPAC, and the rhetoric against BDS is Orwellian.

And yet – one is absolutely forbidden to speak of disproportionate Zionist power, such as leaves Victoria Nuland in a high place in the State Department even after Bush left office.

And this Zionist hijacking is, frankly, a large part of the problem.

I write all this knowing that merely mentioning …how one can not speak of disproportionate Jewish-and-Zionist power… can not *itself* be mentioned. But right wing, Likudnik Jewish Zionists seem to have had, far, far too much power.

Going back to the little-known Office of Special Plans set up precisely to create evidence to justify the Iraq war long desired by Oded Yinon, Sheldon Adelson, and other Greater Israel types.

PHILIP GIRALDI WROTE OCT. 27, 2015 FOR UNZ.COM:

Israel has inevitably responded brutally, producing a death toll of significantly more Palestinians than Israelis. Netanyahu has been referring to the protesters as terrorists and has issued new rules of engagement which permit soldiers to shoot stone throwers. Israeli plainclothes soldiers and police have been identified as infiltrating the protesters while pretending to be Palestinians, urging the young Arabs to hurl stones before pulling out concealed handguns to beat protesters, shoot them and make arrests.

In Gaza five teenagers were shot dead by Israeli soldiers for the crime of coming too close to the separation barrier, which government press releases described as the “frontier.” Killing teenagers in Gaza is a bit like shooting fish in a barrel as they are fenced in and have in reality no way to actually confront the Israeli border guards. On the day following the killing of the boys a mother and infant were killed in an Israeli airstrike. Within Israel an Eritrean was even mistakenly killed by Israeli police because he was reportedly acting oddly.

Because of a hostile media’s self-censorship buttressed by an unfriendly political class, here in the United States one of the few places in which the Palestinians can exercise something like free expression relating to their national aspirations is on college campuses. Israel and its powerful supporters understand that gap in their ability to control the narrative and are doing everything possible to shut down the option.

Friends of Israel, as ever, work from the same playbook orchestrated by the large donors who fund them. They claim that anti-Israel protests on campus to include even letters to the editor in college newspapers constitute a “threatening environment” for Jewish students. The argument is based on a fundamental falsehood, which is that criticism of the actions of a foreign government is equivalent to hatred for the dominant religion of that country, that religion is exactly the same as nationality. Applying that notion liberally would mean that criticism of any country where there is de facto or de jure a dominant state religion would be unacceptable speech. If applied liberally countries spanning the globe would be exempt from criticism, to include not only Israel but also Saudi Arabia and Iran.

French Jews ask ministry to probe incitement at rally against Jewish thinker

It seems to me that anyone who supported the overthrow of Mohammar Qaddafi in Libya deserves condemnation. Europe would not be overrun by millions of Muslim and African migrants if that had not happened.

Most Jews of course take no position in such controversies because they are busy with work, education, family and communal obligations, but those elite Jews who push destructive policies invite confrontation.

If Bernard-Henri Levy really was a “Talmudic philosopher”, he would have been less likely to push such disastrous policy. Jews who study the most Talmud say the least about gentile politics.

PARIS (JTA) — French Jews condemned what they termed an anti-Semitic demonstration in the heart of the French capital against the Jewish public intellectual Bernard-Henri Levy.

The event took place on Oct. 31 on St. Germain Boulevard, where a dozen-odd far-right demonstrators from the Renouveau Français group (“French Reneweal”) convened with posters accusing Levy — a celebrity and supporter of France’s military intervention in Libya — of fomenting war for profit.

The protesters shouted slogans accusing Levy of being a “Talmudic philosopher” who is “waging Zionist war” and who should be “stripped of the French nationality and extradited to Israel,” according to a statement published Thursday by the CRIF umbrella group of French Jewish communities titled “Anti-Semitic demonstration in the heart of Paris.”
