They also helped develop plant species that were cheaper to cultivate. Their contributions provided a boost to the Soviet economy.

Yes, if you recruit an elite, they are usually going to do well. This article could have been written about any country that sought out an elite. Black officers in the US Armed Forces for instance have higher IQs than white enlisted men. They are an elite.
