Many Seventh-Day Adventist churches divide up by race. There are Korean churches and black churches and the like.
I remember that interracial marriages were discouraged at Avondale College in Australia where I grew up (until my parents and I moved to the Napa Valley in 1977).
During the 1960s, an Adventist white congregation invited some black students from the black Oakwood College to give a Sabbath program. The roped off area for these students was not big enough, so many of the blacks had to sit elsewhere. This was against the church’s policy, so the deacons tried to usher the blacks out.
One old white guy stood up and said, “I’ve got six bullets here and they all say nigger on them.”
The minister’s wife began crying. “We love you niggers,” she said, “but we just don’t want you to sit with us.” (From page 285 of the book Seeking A Sanctuary)
