Two Wongs Don’t Make A White

Cathy Seipp calls me "horrible boy." Among the ways I’ve earned this name is my hilarity at some verbal expressions of racism. My home country, for instance, had a "White Australia" policy until I was born, 1966. "Its clarion call had been uttered by Arthur Caldwell, the Minister for Immigration, who, in the course of refusing to allow a Chinese businessman named Mr. Wong to join his legally married and resident spouse in Australia, wittily declared that "Two Wongs don’t make a white." (Things I Didn’t Know by Robert Hughes, pg. 167)
