Currently the RCA accepts the determination of Israel’s Chief Sephardic Rabbi Shlomo Amar about which conversions he will accept.
I don’t expect the RCA will change its approach as long as Rabbi Basil Herring runs the show. He’s too weak. He’s clinging to his position.
All the RCA would have to do to change the status quo is to threaten to launch a lawsuit to the Israel Supreme Court and Rabbi Shlomo Amar would collapse on the matter.
The leaders of the RCA and the OU seem to feel inferior to the charedim. I can’t imagine Basil Herring or Steven Weil rocking the boat with the charedim.
The RCA had more confidence when Rav Yosef Ber Soloveitchik was alive.
The RCA is the rabbinic arm of the OU. The two organizations tend to mirror each other. Sometimes it is hard to tell which one is leading.
