TV Host David Letterman Says He Was A Victim Of An Extortion Attempt

Radar Online reports: "An NYPD source has told RadarOnline.com that the suspect under arrest in the David Letterman extortion case was a producer for CBS’s 48 Hours, Robert Halderman. Halderman often went by his middle name Joe and currently has a residence in Connecticut."

Apparently this guy lived with the woman Letterman had sex with. She still works on the show. The sexual affair ended before 2003.

David Letterman married Regina Lasko in March of this year. They started dating in 1986. At least they didn’t rush into things.

The only thing that surprises me about this sort of thing is when powerful men don’t have extra-curricular sex, particularly with people they work with. My father explained to me early on that propinquity leads to passion.

Bill Carter writes for the New York Times:

David Letterman said on his show on Thursday that he had been the victim of an extortion attempt over charges of sexual affairs with staff members, claims that he conceded were true.

Mr. Letterman said on “The Late Show,” on CBS, that he had been approached by a person who wanted $2 million not to go public with information that Mr. Letterman had been in sexual relationships with women who work on his show.

Mr. Letterman said that he had testified before a grand jury and had admitted to the relationships.

“My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would,” he said on the show. “I feel like I need to protect these people. I need to certainly protect my family.”

Mr. Letterman, 62, married his longtime girlfriend in March. They have a son, now 6.

The New York Daily News says:

"They say, ‘Well, why did it take you so long to get married?’ and, of course, the answer honestly is we wanted to make sure we had the prenup just right," he joked.

"I had avoided getting married pretty good for, like, 23 years," he said. "I secretly felt that men who were married admired me – like I was the last of the real gunslingers."

Letterman was married once before – to his college sweetheart, Michele Cook, from 1969-1977. He dated comedienne Merrill Markoe after that, and started dating Lasko in 1986.

After the wedding announcement, guest Julia Roberts teased Letterman about getting hitched.

"You’re bound for eternity," she said and Letterman replied, "That’s right, and never been more deeply in love."
