Wintrich had his social media accounts shut down, was continuously harassed, and then ultimately fired from his job at one of New York’s largest advertising agencies.
At the LGBT for Trump event Milo Yiannopoulos hosted during the Republican National Convention, I briefly met Wintrich. Liberals have a habit of assuming all gay people are Democrats, the same way they assume all women, all black people, all Hispanics and all union members are Democrats. However, the Republicans are a party of ideas, and there is nothing about the ideas of economic freedom, national security and social conservatism that puts them off-limits to any group. The common liberal belief that all gay people are necessarily “oppressed” by social conservatism, for example, ignores the kind of a live-and-let–live attitude that most conservatives have toward what used to be euphemistically called “alternative lifestyles.” The Bible-believing Southern Baptist in Oklahoma isn’t interested in using federal authority to “impose his morals” on gay people in New York or San Francisco, but he resents very much the way liberals want to use federal authority to impose their morals on his community in suburban Tulsa. This is how the “Bake Me a Cake” issue arises, with militant gay activists as cultural bullies, and this in turn involves the Compulsory Approval Doctrine:
As a result of Supreme Court decisions . . . homosexuality has now gained the status of a constitutional right, which means that disapproval of [homosexual behavior] is effectively prohibited. This new dispensation, which we might call the Compulsory Approval Doctrine, has the consequence of abolishing religious liberty. “Marriage equality” requires universal recognition of same-sex unions. Woe be unto the baker who, for religious reasons, refuses to provide a cake or the florist who refuses to provide flowers for a gay wedding.

Review of “Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right” by Arlie Russell Hochschild
Hochschild made 10 trips to southwestern Louisiana from 2011 to 2016, extended forays away from her perch at the University of California at Berkeley, to delve into her “keen interest in how life feels to people on the right — that is, in the emotion that underlies politics. To understand their emotions,” she writes, “I had to imagine myself in their shoes.” She interviewed some 60 people, including 40 professed tea party supporters, visiting their homes, communities and workplaces. It is the same technique Hochschild employed in “The Second Shift” (1989), a well-reviewed look at how couples manage duties at home when both work outside of it. In this case, however, Hochschild arrives with so many preconceived ideas that they undercut the insight she claims to desire.
Hochschild preps for her conservative immersion by reading “Atlas Shrugged,” because we know tea party types are into that. “If Ayn Rand appealed to them, I imagined, they’d probably be pretty selfish, tough, cold people, and I prepared for the worst,” this acclaimed sociologist writes. “But I was thankful to discover many warm, open people who were deeply charitable to those around them.”
When she lands in Louisiana, Hochschild realizes, “I was definitely not in Berkeley, California. . . . No New York Times at the newsstand, almost no organic produce in grocery stores or farmers’ markets, no foreign films in movie houses, few small cars, fewer petite sizes in clothing stores, fewer pedestrians speaking foreign languages into cell phones — indeed, fewer pedestrians. There were fewer yellow Labradors and more pit bulls and bulldogs. Forget bicycle lanes, color-coded recycling bins, or solar panels on roofs. In some cafes, virtually everything on the menu was fried.”
Dear God, no yellow Labs or solar panels? How do you live?

Sure as much as a gentile can move to the Jewish state and become a full and equal citizen. That’s not easy. Israel is a Jewish state, so non-Jews by definition are second-class citizens.
Orthodox Jews love non-Jews trying to join Orthodox shuls as much as the Alt Right enjoys Jews trying to join the Alt Right.
Orthodox Jews have as much suspicion of gentiles trying to join the tribe as WNs have of Jews trying to join them.
When do groups such as Jews identify as white? When incentives align that way.
Torah makes no room for non-Jewish citizenship in a Jewish state. The Torah of White Nationalism makes no room for Jewish citizenship in a white nationalist state.
Japan is 99% racial Japanese. That might be the model for other nationalist states.
Conversion to Orthodox Judaism rarely works out for either party. People behave more like their genes than their beliefs.

* I’m Jewish and have read the Forward for years. I applaud the Forward — which is very pro-multiculturalism and anti-Western — for being willing to publish this. The OW is shifting, and even the secular Jewish Marxists can feel it.
But it seems to me that while the author is well-meaning and has his head screwed on straight, he dances around the real crux of what it means to be alt-right. It means that you are concerned with the demographic preservation of the European race, and that you believe that Western civilization and its riches belong to the people of Europe. That’s what distinguishes the alt-right from the alt-light. Alt-righters don’t want people of color to assimilate. We want them to stay and succeed in their own countries. Alt-light sites like Breitbart are A-OK with brown people migrating here as long as they “learn our culture” (whatever that means).
* I want to add that Breitbart does incredibly valuable work — it ranks in the mid-200s on Alexa, and reaches tens of millions of people each month. It’s the gateway drug to race realism and the alt-right. Many people won’t be able to swallow race realism described in genetic and biological terms, but can handle attacks on Black Lives Matter, SJW-culture and illegal immigration.
Once you get used to implicitly pro-white thinking like Breitbart, it will be much easier to swallow the explicitly pro-white thinking of Jared Taylor and Richard Spencer.

* The neo-Nazi pro-Hitler corners of the alt-right do a tremendous disservice to the movement and are likely to prevent it from ever going mainstream. For better or worse, the public has a favorable impression of Jews and the Holocaust still has a lot of currency. The movement needs a more nuanced position on where Jews stand in Western society.
You have websites like the Daily Stormer that cheered the death of the great Gene Wilder for no reason other than that he was Jewish. If you think this will ever win over the majority of America’s 200 million whites, dream on. Even 200 years ago, Europeans were not that unthinkingly anti-Semitic.
What’s more, I’m an Orthodox Jew, and Orthodox Jews are mostly not liberal at all. We’re backing Trump by a 3-to-1 margin. As for the “backlash,” Jews aren’t even surviving in these tolerant pluralistic soulless Western countries. Israel could benefit tremendously from the immigration of several million white European Jews — so a bit of anti-Semitism could lead a lot of Jews to move there and help strengthen the state. The window for such immigration is closing fast, since more than half of Diaspora Jews are intermarried, and within two generations they will be absorbed by the general European-American population. I think a little bit of anti-Semitism is necessary for Jews to survive outside of a Jewish country (Israel). What kept Jews together throughout centuries of exile was the brutal reality that we weren’t accepted and had no choice but to stick together.
* For a genuinely compassionate person, there’s always moral principle. Whites are in danger; for some non-white people, that is (for the moment) enough of a reason if their own people aren’t gravely endangered in the process of supporting us.
Jews might be endangered; on the other hand, has any group of people on the planet done more for Jews than whites?
* This guy likes the Alt-right for one reason: He thinks it will eventually benefit Israel, more than the Left does.
The Alt-right exists for one reason: To benefit Europeans.
We don’t need people like Dingleberry and Minsky (who are probably the same person) to twist the flow of support for European people into support for Israel.
We don’t need them to thump their chests over a contrived testing of supposed Ashkenazi intelligence, the legitimacy of the occupation of Palestine, the support of Israel by gullible evangelicals.
The Alt-right is for Europeans. Get your derrieres out, you swindlers.
* Well… partly to cut the author some slack and partly to play Devil’s Advocate… he was writing for Forward. Most of what he wrote aligns fairly well with what ethnic/racial nationalists think, so maybe the usual obsession with Israel was an attempt to coax some of the Jewish readers into softening their views on the Alt-Right – in much the same dynamic by which conventional “conservatism” has peeled many Jews from the Left.
* To the fence sitters, “Alt-Right” comes across as more friendly than “White Nationalist”. It sounds edgy, cool and new. We are mad that non-whites get to use identity politics while whites can’t; that the conservative establishment stabs its voting base in the back at every opportunity and hasn’t conserved anything; that Jewish intellectuals, media figures, lobbyist and financiers played a disproportionate role in many of our national problems. We are mad that they opened our borders and promote multiculturalism while that state of Israel shuts its borders. Even among the more conservative Jews in the American sense who oppose liberal lunacy, they are pro-Zionist and want to spend American blood and treasure defending the Jewish state. Just as Jews during the post WW2 period moved away from the left and co-opted the right (Neoconservatives); Jews know the Alt-Right is going mainstream and will try to make as Jew-friendly as possible. Whites are fighting a two front war: a street-level one against black/brown criminality and dysfunction, and an ideological one. Jewish intellectuals are at the forefront of anti-white ideologies and have much more political influence at the national level than Rev. Al or some other street hustling buffoon.
* Fascinating how they want to join all of our movements. Why not work for the Truth in the many Jewish organizations and then report back to us from time to time? That would be a real contribution. Instead it’s almost as if they want to take over the Alt-Right, much as they did before to Conservatism in decades gone by.
* Europe is sacred to us. Sacred. If we can secure America, Whites will go and fight the Muslim hordes there with their brothers. Now how many Jews will go? Zero. How many would go fight for a threatened Israel? Many. I think you see my point. Super American David Brook’s son is in the military – the Israeli military. Israel is the Brook’s family real country. That’s the proof you see. Now isn’t that the same for you as well?
Jews have thousands of interlocking local, state, national, and international organizations that work on their behalf. How many organizations are you comfortable with Whites having that do the same for them? Zero. You simply refuse to grant us our own existence – and that makes you an enemy. If you were sincere, you would full acknowledge the validity of our mistrust. And if you still wanted to help us for some idealistic reason, you would focus on changing the Jewish mindset by advocacy of one kind or another.
* Iran has not hurt the American people – although it may stand in the way of Jewish interests. Thus Israel and America have different interests. No more wars for Israel. If you want to take on Iran, go for it. Take out their nuclear power plants – if you can. The counter-attack will be terrible. You’d much rather America do this and take the brunt of the counter-attack.
After 9/11, people in Israel reported the feeling of smug satisfaction that suffused the country. Now those stupid Americans know what it’s like and will help us. Your Leaders themselves have said the Jews are a Nation without borders. They’re too discrete to say that anymore, but the attitude remains the same. Without strong counter evidence, I simply assume you hold the same viewpoint – just like David Brooks and his son.
Jews are pro-American only insofar as America serves their interests and the interests of Israel. They would turn on a dime once those interests are no longer being catered to or a better offer comes along as per WW1 Germany and the Balfour agreement.
Also, Russia and Iran are allied and we don’t want to anger Russia. Not only do we not want a WW3, but we want to be allies with this Great Nation and its Heroic Leader, Vladimir Putin. Trump and Putin are the God Brothers, Castor and Pollux reborn. They will usher in the Northern Alliance that Lindbergh called for before you slandered him in your “news” papers and what Yockey called “the Imperium” before he was found suicided in your prison.

This isn’t to imply that the masses are all reading Radix Journal and listening to Red Ice, of course. Rather, the recent media frenzy over the alt-right has ensured that even the most politically unconscious are becoming familiar with our movement.
While it can be said that there is no such thing as bad PR, we must keep in mind that the term “alt-right” is in danger of being coopted. The label is appealing to an array of groups with differing interests. As such, we – the “real” alt-right that espouses racial nationalism and unapologetically discusses Jewish subversion – must adamantly oppose those who attempt to derail our movement with notions of civic or cultural nationalism.
A recent article in the Forward (formerly known as the Jewish Daily Forward) bears the rather alarming title “I’m a Jew, and I’m a Member of the Alt-Right.”
In this article, the author, Joshua Seidel, actually raises a number of decent points.
Is “Ricky” wrong? Does this dynamic indeed exist in our community? Are Jewish people not overrepresented in this great western push for “diversity”? Most Jews would call Ricky anti-Semitic for saying this, while I’d simply call it the truth.
Acknowledging the Jewish double-standard – multiculturalism for thee but not for me – is actually quite significant, especially in an explicitly Jewish publication.
Mr. Seidel also offers a thoughtful observation regarding Jewish condemnation of “white privilege”:
I sometimes wonder what Jews who enthusiastically go on about “white privilege” think the endgame is. They seem to think this concept will serve to shut the mouths of middle and working class whites in flyover country, while liberal Jews hold the clipboards and direct victorious POC in a dismantling of “whiteness.” Privileges will be checked, and all will be well in the world. I don’t see it.
In light of such comments, one might be tempted to believe that the author is an ally to our cause.
That, however, is simply not the case.
On Twitter, Mr. Seidel claimed that no race has an “ultimate claim” on America, and that “cultural nationalism” is the law of the land:
@JSBTC@jdforward If you’re talking about America, no race has an ultimate claim, it’s cultural nationalism.
What the author ignores is that that America was clearly intended to be a country for White people. Moreover, America was roughly 90% White until the ill-fated Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. I don’t think America needs to be 100% white, but it does need an overwhelming White majority.
Someone with a Jewish identity will always see the world through a Jewish lens. And in a conflict between his ethnic group and another, he will almost always take his own side. Seeing as how he is not White, he will never explicitly advocate for White interests, and will attempt to pervert the alt-right’s message to suit his own ends.
Therein lies the issue with accepting Jews into the alt-right.

Harry Burkhart was born in Grozny in Chechnya but traveled on German documents, as a German citizen.
Los Angeles Times: The saga of Harry Burkhart, who has been charged in a four-night arson rampage in the city, and his mother, Dorothee, spans continents. Theirs is a tale of massage parlors, small-time con games, neo-Nazi conspiracies, and investigations into mysterious fires set in three countries.
Once Dorothee Burkhart had squeezed through a window and escaped, only two things mattered: Finding Harry and getting out of Germany.
It was September 2007 in Frankfurt. Four months earlier, police had arrested Burkhart in a string of thefts and sent her to a woman’s prison to await trial. Separated from Harry, her 19-year-old son who suffered from a slew of mental disabilities, she had grown increasingly anxious. Without her, Harry was alone and unprotected in a city that she believed was filled with people set on hurting them.
So, when Burkhart developed chest pains in prison, she didn’t resist being brought to a nearby hospital, she later told authorities in an account of the escape. When left alone and uncuffed in a bathroom, Burkhart squeezed through a tiny window and ran to a nearby train station. Once safely away, she called Harry and told him to come with their passports and cash. They drove to Amsterdam and boarded a plane, landing 5,000 miles away in Vancouver, Canada.
It was the start of a journey by a mother and her son that came to a calamitous end this week in Los Angeles, when Harry was arrested and charged with setting ablaze dozens of vehicles and a few buildings in a four-night arson rampage that set the city on edge. The fires, investigators say, were a son’s twisted, angry response to seeing his mother captured by federal authorities intent on extraditing her back to Germany.
Indeed, as investigators have begun to unravel the Burkharts’ tightly intertwined lives, they have happened upon a story perhaps more incredible than the fires themselves. It’s a tale of massage parlors, small-time con games, neo-Nazi conspiracies, and investigations into mysterious fires set in three countries…
Connecting with the Mennonite community in Vancouver offered a rare sense of refuge for the pair. Some members of the community even signed a letter urging authorities to grant the Burkharts’ refugee petition. Ingrid Schultz, pastor at First United Mennonite Church in Vancouver, said Harry had a “child-like quality about him” and never seemed happier than when he was in the city’s large Stanley Park “just spending time with the ducks.”
It appears that Dorothee and Harry arrived in Los Angeles in late 2010, after they had exhausted their appeals for immigrant status in Vancouver. It was not their first time in the city. They had come in 2007 shortly before Dorothee was arrested in Germany. During the Burkharts’ visit, police responded to a domestic abuse call and investigated allegations that Harry had tried to attack his mother with scissors. No charges were filed.
After the Burkharts arrived in 2010, they disappeared into the large Russian immigrant community in West Hollywood. They rented an apartment for a few months and then moved to side-by-side rooms above a hair salon on Sunset Boulevard, where they lived until their arrests.
Officials believe Dorothee tapped into the city’s illicit sex trade for work, running a sexual-massage parlor out of her room, according to Los Angeles law enforcement sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case was ongoing. A website listing Dorothee Burkhart as administrator says that a woman named “Annabelle” provides “soul-relaxation massage.” The website lists the address the Burkharts shared on Sunset Boulevard.

Comment: The media reaction to Trump reminds me a lot of the media reaction to Palin. In both cases:
a. There is plenty to criticize, and plenty of reasons not to want them as president or VP.
b. A lot of the actual reaction and much of the criticism comes down to style–wrong class markers, describing policies in the wrong words, wrong accent, etc.

Comment: I don’t see how Israel’s main problem is more likely to be solved under a Trump than Clinton regime. We’ll keep giving them money and arms, they’ll keep oppressing the Palestinians (who, given the chance, would do much worse to the Israelis). They’re not going to entirely ethnically cleanse or mass murder the Palestinians (it wouldn’t play domestically or internationally), the Palestinians aren’t going to start liking the Israelis enough for peace to be likely except under a strongman with effective secret police who is cowed or bought by us or Israel to avoid conflict (and Israel wouldn’t want a strong state there anyway), and so things will go on as they have been for the forseeable future.

Many of the attacks, known as “trolling,” came from anonymous users, but not all. Milo Yiannopoulos, one of the most infamous trolls on the internet, was one of them. He is an editor at Breitbart, the conservative news website.
We learn something that sounds sort of interesting in paragraph 29 of 31:
There was also a wave of support for Leslie Jones with #LoveforLeslie and she is now back on Twitter. Jones took action and reported Yiannopoulos to Twitter. In response, the company permanently suspended his account for violating their rules and conditions.
What did Milo say exactly, and where/when did he say it?
We don’t know, but we have to assume it must have been really, really bad- so bad that ABC News couldn’t publish any of his comments, no matter how heavily censored.

Garrison Keillor evidently doesn’t spend a lot of time in Florida. He probably found War Dogs confusing: Why isn’t this movie about Dick Cheney? What is this movie about anyway?
and a fleet of aircraft — they showed off by way of philanthropy or by raising brilliant offspring. They sympathized with the civil rights movement. In Queens, blacks were a threat to property values — they belonged in the Bronx, not down the street. To the Times, Queens is Cleveland. Bush league. You are Queens.
And clearly no Jews ever lived in Fred Trump’s apartments in Forest Hills, Brighton Beach, or Coney Island. The reason Fred pretend to be Swedish instead of German to his racist tenants who didn’t want their neighborhoods turning black was that he only rented to, uh, Texans.
The casinos were totally Queens, the gold faucets in your triplex, the bragging, the insults, but you wanted to be liked by Those People.
Because there weren’t any of Those People in Queens when Trump grew up there.
Actually, Keillor might be onto an interesting social distinction without knowing enough or having the bravery to follow it up.
Clearly, contra Keillor, Trump’s persona is highly Jewish in affect. But perhaps Keillor isn’t thinking about Jewish-Americans in general, but instead is obsessing about one particular varietal: the old money German-Jewish high society who wouldn’t let Eastern European Jews into their country clubs because of their cruder manners.
There is a reasonable possibility that Trump didn’t encounter until he was an adult many of the more refined German-Jewish Our Crowd elite, like the Sulzbergers. I don’t know if it’s true, but that’s an interesting possibility that a better-informed observer than Keillor might be able to do something with.
You wanted Mike Bloomberg to invite you to dinner at his townhouse. You wanted the Times to run a three-part story about you, that you meditate and are a passionate kayaker and collect 14th-century Islamic mosaics. You wish you were that person but you didn’t have the time.
Actually, I don’t think Trump cares at all about being seen as an SWPL.
Trump has an on-the-noseness that’s averse to SWPL irony and pretense. Consider: Kayaking or golf? Which would seem more fashionable for Trump to do?
Clearly, golf is going out of fashion as the public gets poorer and more stressed for time.
Except that the really big guys in Trump’s orbit — the last four presidents, say, or Mike Bloomberg — are fanatical golfers. Heck Bill Clinton is a member of Trump’s golf club. The idea of pretending to care about a sport other than golf so that he would look fashionable in the Times simply doesn’t occur to Trump. Presidents play golf…
…Keillor appears to be projecting some of his own provincial status insecurities onto Trump, which isn’t a good fit. I believe Keillor tried living in New York for a number of years, but then returned to St. Paul where he can be a very big fish in a small pond.
Trump may just not be a good subject for writers, so they wind up projecting a lot onto him.
COMMENTS:
* According to the Sage of Minnesota, Trump had a Very Bad Month. But he is doing better in the polls at the end of it than he was at the beginning. Two more months this bad would easily make him president.
* Here Keillor proves he really is the folksy bumpkin he’s always pretended to be. His screed is filled with errors only a slow talker could make.
As Kurt Vonnegut wrote, “You are what you pretend to be.”
Where did Garrison learn about New York, I wonder? From watching TV on a fuzzy screen in Minnesota?
Somebody should tell him: A lot of people out here got here from somewhere else because they are at the top of their field…
* Garrison Keillor deigning to explain New York City to Donald Trump is the epitome of chutzpah.
Also, the idea that anyone who looks down on Trump now would respect him if he were elected President — does Keillor think they respected W.?
* Minnesotans, namely urbanites and suburbanites in the Twin Cities, are excruciatingly status-conscious. F. Scott Fitzgerald was the quintessential Minnesotan in that respect.
Does anyone have a theory to explain it?
Keillor is demonstrating typical Minnesota snobbery here, unintentionally telling us more about his own native habitat than about Trump’s.
* Keillor elevates Democrat status to a substitute religion. For him, there are only two kinds of Americans: Dems and Reps, polarized like Europe in the Thirty Years War. Of course both sides are White, because all the NAMS he got on PHC were White-presenting.
Democrianiaty appears to substitute in Keillor’s brain for the Lutheranism he loved to harmlessly insert in PHC, but which he must know in his heart has long gone daft, literally far over the rainbow.
For a guy whose radio plays are entertaining, his prose on a written page in front of me is brutally simplistic – folk Manicheanism. I’ve never been able to finish reading one page of it without revulsion.
* I was taking a quick look into Emma Lazarus, whose poem is getting a lot of play these days as some kind of nostrum against Trumpish borders. When she wasn’t telling us This is Who We Are, i.e. a nation of immigrants taken in without regard to race or creed or rank, she was advocating for a Jewish nation in Palestine without cracking a smile, forming the Society for the Improvement and Colonization of East European Jews, and sticking up for these now elite German Jews, who in 1877 were the arriviste bane of New York hoteliers:
“Judge Henry Hilton, the Grand Union Hotel’s owner, explained he had no objection to the Sephardic elite. Those like Emma Lazarus’ family, who had lived in America since before the Revolution, were the refined, “true Hebrews.” According to Hilton, only the dirty, greedy, German immigrant “Seligman Jews” were unwanted.”
* How depressing. I’d always been a fan of Keillor’s and, after rediscovering him recently, became an even bigger fan. This sneering article doesn’t sound like him at all (although admittedly I’ve hardly ever read his articles). It’s true, political correctness makes you stupid (not to mention nasty), and not even such a brilliant guy as Keillor is immune.
* Any time I read something anyone else on the left, especially when they try to analyze someone else, I think of Vox Day’s adage: SJW always project. My guess is that Keillor’s observations about Trump tell you more about Keillor’s experience living in NYC while temporarily basing his show there.
* Nope, there are no loud Jews from Forest Hills, Queens.
* I have never liked Keillor’, but I’d like to read (not hear) his explanation of why Minneapolis (not St. Paul) was for many years “the capital of anti-Semitism in the United States”:
Minneapolis was known for anti-Semitism beginning in the 1880s and through the 1950s.[29] The city was described as “the capital of anti-Semitism in the United States” in 1946 by Carey McWilliams[30] and in 1959 by Gunther Plaut.[31] At that time the city’s Jews were excluded from membership in many organizations, faced employment discrimination, and were considered unwelcome residents in some neighborhoods.[32] Jews in Minneapolis were also not allowed to buy homes in certain neighborhoods of Minneapolis.[33]
An interesting topic, but I’m almost certain he would have nothing interesting to say about it.
* So Keillor’s argument is that in New York everyone is above average.
* Wow, your readers aren’t kidding about the projection Keillor has going on there. Reading it felt like watching one of those scenes on “The Office” where Steve Carrell’s character is embarrassing himself and the other characters just stand around looking nervous while he continues to dig himself in deeper.
* “German” and more properly here “Anglicized” Jews are those Ashkenazi that have been culturally assimilated, speak German or English as their first language, usually for generations, and are mostly ignorant or even disdainful of some of the practices of our bumpkin ancestors and distant relatives in Eastern Europe and Israel. It is not really just “old money high society” that is not fond of their “cruder manners,” but the large respectable majority.
Germanization was a process that extended far outside the borders of modern Germany. All over Eastern Europe, covering modern Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and parts of Ukraine and Romania, the more urban and intelligent Jews moved to the German-speaking cities and adopted increasing amounts of German language and culture.
Just to give an example of this, John von Neumann went to a German-language and style high school in Budapest, run by the Lutheran Church, but with a majority Jewish student body. From there he went to the German University of Berlin and the German-Swiss ETH Zurich before settling in Princeton.
As in greater Germany for several centuries, it really only takes one or two generations raised in secular America to join the larger Anglicized US Jewish population, so there really is no longer meaningful distinction in New York society between the descendants of Jews from Berlin who came in 1852 and Jews from Kiev who came in 1907. Nonetheless, new immigrants from Russia sometimes just can’t fit in a place like the New York Times.
* Wikipedia: Keillor considers himself a loner and prefers not to make eye contact with people. Though not diagnosed, he also considers himself to be on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum.[12] He spoke about his experiences as an autistic person in his keynote address at the 19th Annual Minnesota Autism Conference in 2014.
* I think Anglicized Jewsis the more precise description of the “German Jews” Steve has mentioned a few times who were excluding the new “Russian Jews” from the country club. The Old Country Club Jews were certainly disproportionately from greater Germany, but greater Germany was receiving and assimilating a continuous influx of “Russian Jews” in the 17th to 19th centuries, as well expanding Prussia and Austria into heavily Jewish areas to their east and imposing secularization and germanization policies on them. So it is less an ethnic discrimination at the country clubs than a cultural one. One people had been living well in the West for many generations, the other was arriving poor and with unrefined Russian customs and often took religious customs too seriously.
* The rules of acceptable speech are so confusing. I used to think that only a Jewish writer could pen this kind of article without being an evil anti-semite, but it appears that as long as you’re attacking Donald Trump a Gentile can get away with it too. I still wouldn’t dare to mention Jewish influence under my real name.
* Kareem Abdul Jabbar was on NPR this morning and said, “Ignorance is not something that lends itself to a meaningful discussion. Some of these people really shouldn’t vote because they don’t know what the issues are. And I think people who are voting in the blind are doing a disservice to our country by not being better informed.”
It almost like a literacy test might be in order.
* If Trump was ever motivated by winning the respect of the Times and urbane Jews he would have made a series of different choices in life more to their tastes and probably would have stayed clear of Atlantic City altogether. His style and aesthetic is more reminiscent of what blue collar Italian Americans would do if they came into money. His persona would have been so different that he probably would not have been a household name.
Being so obviously status-conscious, it probably escapes Keillor that the Trump persona is intentionally in opposition to the swells who think they are the gatekeepers and taste-makers.
* “Trump may just not be a good subject for writers, so they wind up projecting a lot onto him.”
That’s too bad because he’s fabulous.
Is it that hard to understand or appreciate that someone can have rare, needed virtues despite being tacky?
And he’s so funny, too! During the primary debates, I accidentally landed on the floor from one particularly hysterical laughing fit. After that, I made sure to have the oversized sofa all to myself to lie on, go crazy on…
Feel so sorry for all the writers and serious people who cannot enjoy such pleasure and, indeed, are in pain!
* Garrison Keillor is a national treasure. But it’s fascinating how he has had to write about his small-town roots to achieve his obvious lifetime goal of repudiating them and becoming a sophisticate— and how he has failed in the process.
In fact, if he’d succeeded in becoming a sophisticate, he would have lost his creative abilities and been kicked out of the sophisticate crowd, which seems to have happened to some extent. But somehow his perceptiveness when it comes to small-town life fails him when it comes to the nuances of Manhattan. It makes for an interesting contrast with Tom Wolfe, who can describe people from any setting, rich or poor. I bet Tom Wolfe, a Ph.D., is more detached and also knows how to do the hard work of researching how people live and think, while Keillor goes entirely on formative personal experiences.
* Blacks are a threat to property values in Manhattan and upscale SWPL Brooklyn too, that’s why they have been, willy-nilly, removed from these locales by public policy directed by the machers of Manhattan.
You know what preserves property values in New York City? An Eruv. Nothing else achieves the same effect, and the neighborhood that Trump grew up in, and neighborhoods adjoining it, have been Eruved for at least 40 years, probably more. Trump grew up in Jamaica estates, cheek by jowl to the ghetto that is now south western queens, but the ghetto will never move into Jamaica Estates and the adjoining upscale neighborhoods because they have been Eruved.
The upper west side of Manhattan, liberal macher heartland, has been Eruved too.
Keilor is such a toady.
* Yes “philanthropy,” many a Jewish conman has pointed to his massive contributions to Jewish orgs to garner sympathy after the SEC comes calling.
* I like a lot of Keillor’s work and support Trump. I don’t particularly like Trump although I bet he’d be fun to play golf with and he seems ok if you can get past the bluster. Like Steve said, too gauche for this east coaster. But I have grown to support the U.S. citizens’ first position after a long time as a WSJ or Ludwig von Mises (so I fancied) free trade uber alles believer.
