Matt and his beautiful wife Emmanuelle Richard will move to Washington D.C.
He’s going to be a big shot at the publication.
Editor Nick Gillespie will remain at Reason.
Matt did not want this news to get out. I got it because some drunks, against the strictest orders, spilled.
(I got a call Tuesday morning from a friend. He said his stomach was in knots. He feared he was the one who spilled. Nope. It was Matt’s parents, though I’m not saying they are drunks.)
For 48 hours, I weighed up my love for Matt with my love for dish.
In the end, my desire to be queen for a day won out.
Matt’s the author of a smashing new book on John McCain. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
I suspect this move has to do with Reason’s libertarian views on nobbing your sources — a stiff contrast to the LA Times.
I email Nick Gillespie:
What exactly are your intentions towards Matt Welch?
Matt is a friend of mine and I don’t want to see him get hurt.
We all know how you can toy with the emotions of your writers. Who can forget those dark days of the Jacob Sullum suicide watch when you failed to evince sufficient enthusiasm for his book on second-hand smoke?
