The Tucson Board of Rabbis this week sent a letter to Gov. Doug Ducey asking him to reverse his stand on barring Syrian refugees from entering Arizona. Nancy Montoya talks with Rabbi Samuel Cohon of Temple Emanu-El about why he joined every Rabbi in Southern Arizona in signing the letter.
“First of all as Jews we understand what it means to be refugees perhaps better than any other people in history,” Cohon said.
Cohon joined 10 other southern Arizona rabbis in sending a letter to the governor asking him not to give in to fear.
“We are all immigrants, and most of us were refugees when we came to America,” Cohon said.
More than 30 other governors also asked that Muslim refugees from Syria not to be sent to their states.
“The bad news is that our own state’s governor chose to join that mistaken parade,” Cohon said.
So far, the governor’s office has not responded to the rabbis. Cohon says the group will continue lobbying.
I would love to see these rabbis house Muslims in their own homes.
