John J. Mearsheimer, “The Future of Palestine: Righteous Jews vs. the New Afrikaners,” in Antony Loewenstein and Ahmed Moor, eds., After Zionism: One State for Israel and Palestine, (London: Saqi Books, 2012), pp. 135-153:
Israel is not going to allow the Palestinians to have a real state of their own in Gaza and the West Bank… Instead, those territories will be formally incorporated into a Greater Israel, which will be a full-blown Apartheid state bearing a marked resemblance to white-ruled South Africa. Yet a Jewish Apartheid state is not politically viable over the long-term. In the end, it will become a democratic bi-national state, whose politics will be dominated by its Palestinian citizens. In other words, it will cease being a Jewish state…
Perhaps the single best indicator of how far to the Right Israel has moved in recent years is the shocking fact that Avigdor Lieberman is employed as its foreign minister. Even Martin Peretez…describes Lieberman as a neo-fascist…
A despicable political system, Apartheid is fundamentally at odds with basic American values, as well as core Jewish values.
That last sentence is nonsense. Apartheid South Africa was the crown jewel of the continent. Since Apartheid fell in 1994, the average life expectancy of South Africans has dropped a decade and the country is falling apart.
Apartheid is not fundamentally at odds with basic American values as pretty much every American practices Apartheid in his own life, preferring to work, socialize, live and worship with his own race and minimizing contact with blacks, Mexicans and Muslims in particular.
There’s nothing in Torah against Apartheid. Torah, for example the Rambam’s Laws of Kings, makes clear that non-Jews can’t be citizens of a Torah state of Israel.
It’s weird when a political scientist can discuss all sorts of totalitarian systems without passing any moral judgments but suddenly gets exercised about the way Israel treats the Palestinians.
