What Do Liberia And Ferguson Have In Common?

The situation in Liberia sounds similar to the riots in Ferguson, but how do you blame the unrest in Libera on white racism?

The New York Times reports:

Liberia’s halting efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak spreading across parts of West Africa quickly turned violent on Wednesday when angry young men hurled rocks and stormed barbed-wire barricades, trying to break out of a neighborhood here that had been cordoned off by the government.

Soldiers repelled the surging crowd with live rounds, driving hundreds of young men back into the neighborhood, a slum of tens of thousands in Monrovia known as West Point.

Why is it a crime in America to let your nine-year old play in the park without adult supervision? At age six, I wandered freely around the bush outside our home in Australia without adult supervision. In many homogeneous white and oriental neighborhoods and countries, you can do this. I grew up in rural white communities in New South Wales and California and there was little crime and no fear about abduction. In many places with blacks and latinos, you can’t let your kids play freely without adult supervision. Different groups have different norms. Jews, Christians and Muslims, for instance, have different norms. Orientals, whites, and blacks have different norms. If you live in a community of law-abiding citizens who share a common race or religion, adults are more likely to look after other people’s children because they are more likely to have genetic ties or religious ties to these kids.

My life experience has shown that orientals are more cautious and law abiding than whites who in turn are more cautious and law-abiding than latinos who are in turn more cautious and law-abiding then blacks.

I’ve walked through Japanese-American neighborhoods and Jewish-Americans neighborhoods and they seem like safe places. I’ve never walked through a Latino or African-American neighborhood that seemed equally safe.
