Joe emails: The total popular vote in 2012 for President was
Obama 61,000,000
Romney 57,500,000
Total 118.5 million
2008 was:
Obama – 66,862,039
Mccain – 58,319,442
Total 125.1 million
2004 was:
Bush 62,028,285
Kerry 59,028,109
Total 121 million
Obama lost a ton of votes, over 5 million but Romney actually got fewer votes than McCain received. Obama got less votes than W in 2004.
Those Obama voters who left his fold, I believe, were rational whites who voted for Romney, but then how the heck did Romney get less votes than McCain?
Two reasons, one obvious and spoken about, and one that is more silent and perhaps devastating to the GOP.
First, Obama replaced the lost white votes with blacks, latinos, single women, and youth who turned out almost just as they did in 2008, and gave him a higher percentage of their vote as well. The whites who left were partially replaced by a better than expected performance among the base.
But still, Obama lost 5 million votes and Romney did not manage to outpoll McCain? What happened.
Well, the 59 million McCain voters, who if they were still around would have helped Romney alot and may have put Romney over the top, left the pool of potential GOP voters by, well, dying.
The GOP white vote is not only shrinking relative to the minority vote to the babies born to Latinos and Blacks in the last 30 years who are now voters, as opposed to suburban whites with their 1.2 kids, the GOP white vote is literally dying in the absolute sense. The WWII generation that still measures a President by the performance in office rather than the rap stars he hangs out with are being buried. Hip hop nation does not groove to Romney or anyone white with an intellect. They want a story with a beat they can dance to. Oh, and they like gays.
The GOP needs a facelift and perhaps a way to stop white people from dying.
