In the mid 70s B Netanyahu was a grad student at MIT. He went by the name B Nitai-not Netanyahu and was married to a non Jew. He continued to live in the Boston area and work after receiving his Masters degree. What brought him back to Israel was the death of his brother in Entebbe. He was convinced I believe by Moshe Arens to come back and take up the family heritage in Likud politics.
Of course, now he has many times received chareidi votes and has some frum descendants.
Never push anyone completely away or write off from the fold.
