In a lecture Dec. 21, 2009 for Torah in Motion, Professor Marc B. Shapiro says:
One of you asked me to talk about the Chofetz Chaim and the forged Talmud Yerushalmi. You can find the information in here, The Writings of the Chofetz Chaim, the introduction, his son tells how between WWI and WWII, the Chofetz Chaim was living in the Ukraine with Hasidim and he started wearing the tefillin of Rabbeinu Tam. And his son thought the reason was that he lived with the Hasidim and wanted to be like them, but the son asked him and it turned out that the Chofetz Chaim’s reason was that the tractate Kodshim had appeared and in there was a passage that gives the order of Rabbeinu Tam. The son describes how he described to his father that this was a forgery and had been disproven. The Chofetz Chaim stopped wearing the tefillin of Rabbeinu Tam.
The Chofetz Chaim’s wife never daven or bentched. Her husband exempted her from this so she could concentrate on raising the kids. I don’t know if she knew how to read Hebrew.
