This Haaretz story is getting a lot of play in the blogosphere.
Is the raping of a peace activist by the Palestinian man they’re protecting just desserts? Extremely impolite? Or who are we to judge? That’s his culture.
It seems to me like just desserts. You give sanctuary to evil people. How do you expect them to act?
I love this paragraph in the Haaretz story:
One villager said the female activists bring a different “culture with them, western, too open. The young people, especially from the villages, aren’t used to stay near other girls, they do not know their culture, certainly when it’s a young woman staying with other women in a strange house. They misinterpret it.”
It reminds me of the chilling novel Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee. The white protagonist’s daughter consents to repeated rape by wild young black men. She felt like she had it coming as a white person in racist South Africa and she didn’t want to leave her land.
