Eva’s Story: A Survivor’s Tale by the Step-Sister of Anne Frank

This is a great Holocaust memoir.

Here are some of the most inspiring passages:

From page 188 (after Eva had been liberated by the Russians, she was 15):

After these showers we were handed clean knickers and directed to another tent where a long trestle table was heaped with bras. On a chair by the entrance sat a Russian soldier. It was his dream come true! As each of us passed, he held up both his hands with cupped fingers and had a good squeeze of our bosoms to gauge the size. When he was quite sure of the measurement, he called out to his colleague “small” or “middling”! This gentleman then rummaged round in the pile until he found a suitable cup size which he had great pleasure in fitting us, hooking it securely at the back and testing the front with groping palms.

Hilarious fits of laughter and giggling on all sides kept us in good spirits and I didn’t feel at all ashamed or awkward.

AROUND AGE 12, EVA WAS MUCH IN LOVE WITH HER BROTHER (pages 32-33):

…I lay on a mattress on the floor in Heinz’s room. In the darkness I would creep over to his bed and climb in next to him for a cuddle. We started kissing and hugging with the joy of being together again, until all our suppressed energy and budding sexuality began to arouse us. The kissing and cuddling became more and more furtively pleasant. We would start to pet each other, feeling blissful surges of adolescent love. We did not really do anything wrong, and we were very scared that our parents would find out what we were up to, but we could not help ourselves. We only had each other to love.
