I haven’t met a Jew yet who gave a damn about May being Jewish History month. When you are secure in your identity, you don’t need these government proclamations to shore up your sense of self.
On the other hand, if you don’t have a strong sense of self, it doesn’t matter how many times Los Angeles celebrate Caesar Chavez day or America observes Black History month, you’re still going to be shaky until you earn your way in life.
Hardly any Japanese-Americans are politicians, yet you never hear the Japanese-American community crying about the need for role models. Japanese-Americans simply study hard and work hard and look after their families. They don’t need government handouts, proclamations and affirmative action to feel good about themselves.
