* That is why I think Merkel went insane somewhere in the Spring 2015. The way she reacted toward illegal immigrants was truly bizarre taking into consideration her previous record on this matter.
However, this may be explainable if the theory floating around this blog is true – she wants to become first female UN Secretary. She needs to appeal to various Islamic, brown and black people to get this position.
And similar process has happened, albeit on a more limited scale – note the career of Donald Tusk, former holder of modest office – that of Polish PM.
Tusk was regarded as somebody who keeps an eye for German interests in Poland. In reward he was supposed to get some prestigious international position, far from the sectarian war that is Polish politics. And – surprise! – suddenly he became a President of the European Union.
I suppose that Poland folding and agreeing to taking seven or nine thousands of illegal immigrants (before parliamentary elections, no less!) may be directly contributed to this promotion. He facilitated it and ultimately his example must have convinced many recalcitrant key people that listening to Mutti Merkel has its merits.
However, Tusk departure for Brussel had in consequence led to electoral disaster for his party. He is canny politician, able to keep diverse interests together and he has an ear for popular will. His successor didn’t have such abilities.
So, the rewards for one Central European politician is position of President. But for the Chancellor of Germany EU is too small. So the next step for her is the Secretary General of United Nations.
* But, if assimilation is that easy, how can she account for the fact that the Turkish Muslims who immigrated to Germany in the 1960s have failed to assimilate over a 50-year period?
From Wikipedia: “In recent years, some in the Turkish minority have shown cultural problems in integrating into German society. A recent non-governmental telephone survey, carried out jointly by Liljeberg and the Berlin-based INFO polling company sampled 1011 Turkish migrants living in Germany. It showed 72% of the Turks surveyed in Germany believe that Islam is the only true religion, 62% prefer social contacts only to fellow Turks, 46% wish that one day more Muslims live in Germany than Christians, 25% think atheists are inferior human beings and 18% felt that Jews are inferior people.
* Merkel is stupid and incompetent, but the horrible thing is the Christian Democrats are still totally in thrall to her. She gave an idiotic speech full of platitudes during their party conference (saying she’s against multiculturalism, but justifying her open borders policy with the “christliches Menschenbild”, that is roughly “the Christian view of the dignity of every person”, and that sealing the borders just isn’t possible, because globalization), and the fools gave her a standing ovation for ten minutes. They still think they can get away with this, and that it will be sufficient to talk about peripheral matters like forbidding the Burqa or about unworkable schemes like having the asylum seekers pledge commitment to democratic values (which are totally nebulous).
The only ray of light is that next March there’ll be state elections in three states and the right-wing AfD is set to enter state parliaments in all three of them. Maybe it won’t change anything, but at least the Christian Democrats will probably get the thrashing they have earned for themselves by their spineless cowardice.
* I still suspect that Merkel thought (maybe still thinks) the Syrians are a good deal for Germany, all things considered. The same way our elites have attempted to drown our African -Americans in a sea of hispanics since 1965. Merkel may really believe that educated Syrian refugees are far better for Germany than semi-literate Anatolian Turks who take orders from Erdogan, or illiterate Kosovars and Gypsies, and she could be right. She may have underestimated how many of the “refugees” would actually turn out to be Pakistanis and Afghanis, but maybe she actually plans to remedy that and send those people home. If you believe that Europe is about to be inundated with sub-Saharan Africans, taking Syrians now and then saying “Ok, we’re full now, the Africans have to go someplace else” is also a pretty smart move.
* Maybe she just exposed, because of sheer clumsiness, what other politicians do more skillfully: preach something, and then do the reverse. Sarkozy won the presidential elections of 2007 by preaching tough law and order policies and reduced immigration. Then he slashed police budgets, suppressed 12,000 police jobs, opened the door to immigration and made naturalization easier and faster. He only failed to have affirmative action put into the French constitution.
Merkel preaches anti-multiculturalism to gain political support from conservatives (she is the head of the main conservative party of Germany, after all). Then, when she got the votes she needed, she opened the gates to Muslim immigrants.
It also reminds me of candidate George W Bush’s promise of a “humble foreign policy” in 2000.
