Daily Mail: The Pope tells gypsies to stop ‘fighting’ and ‘swindling’ and make sure they send their children to school

REPORT: The Pope has told gypsies not to ‘fight’ or ‘swindle’ and ordered them to always send their children to school.
Pope Francis told a group of thousands of Roma, Sinti and other travelling people, from all over Europe, to respect the law and avoid bringing shame on their culture through petty crime.
At a gathering in Rome, Francis condemned ‘centuries’ of discrimination against Europe’s gypsies, he said they must do their part by respecting the law and sending their children to school.
‘Don’t give the media and the public reason to think badly of you,’ he said.
Gypsies who professed themselves to be Christians must, ‘avoid everything that is not worthy of the word: falsehood, fraud, swindles, fighting’, he warned.
Francis said that while the state had to guarantee education, it was ‘the duty of adults to see to it that children go to school’.
Italy is home to Europe’s biggest traveller camp, outside Rome, and the pope has visited several nomadic camps since his appointment in 2013.
Roma have been living in Italy for seven centuries. But their poverty and resistance to integration have made them conspicuous. In recent years several camps have been attacked by fire bombs.
On Monday Francis acknowledged that gypsies and travellers had too long suffered from xenophobia and said it was now time to ‘turn the page’.
