ADL<\/a>: <\/p>\n June is LGBT Pride Month. To under\u00adstand the LGBT move\u00adment, it\u2019s impor\u00adtant to appre\u00adci\u00adate the mean\u00ading of pride. Pride, accord\u00ading to Merriam-Webster, is \u201ca feel\u00ading that you respect your\u00adself and deserve to be respected by other peo\u00adple.\u201d How does this trans\u00adlate into LGBT pride or pride amongst any other group of peo\u00adple such as African Amer\u00adi\u00adcans, Jews, women or immi\u00adgrants? Espe\u00adcially for groups of peo\u00adple who have been oppressed, mar\u00adgin\u00adal\u00adized, dis\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adnated against and tar\u00adgeted for bul\u00adly\u00ading, harass\u00adment and vio\u00adlence, pride is key. Pride is a group of peo\u00adple stand\u00ading together and affirm\u00ading their self-worth, their his\u00adtory and accom\u00adplish\u00adments, their capa\u00adbil\u00adity, dig\u00adnity and their vis\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adity. It is a vocal and pow\u00ader\u00adful state\u00adment to them\u00adselves and the world that they deserve to be treated with respect and equal\u00adity. Pride is a way out.<\/p>\n The LGBT Pride Move\u00adment began at Stonewall in the sum\u00admer of 1969. On June 28, a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in NYC, turned vio\u00adlent when cus\u00adtomers and local sym\u00adpa\u00adthiz\u00aders rioted against the police. The riot embod\u00adied the mount\u00ading of anger and weari\u00adness the gay com\u00admu\u00adnity felt about the police depart\u00adment tar\u00adget\u00ading gay clubs and engag\u00ading in dis\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtory prac\u00adtices, which occurred reg\u00adu\u00adlarly dur\u00ading that time. And yes, it also rep\u00adre\u00adsented their pride. The Stonewall riot was fol\u00adlowed by days of demon\u00adstra\u00adtions in NYC and was the impe\u00adtus for the cre\u00adation of sev\u00aderal gay, les\u00adbian and bisex\u00adual civil rights orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions. One year later, the first Gay Pride marches took place in New York, Los Ange\u00adles and Chicago, com\u00admem\u00ado\u00adrat\u00ading the Stonewall riots.
