As the Erik Wemple Blog noted in a previous post, Weisman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/erik-wemple\/wp\/2016\/05\/19\/new-york-times-staffer-tweets-out-op-ed-critical-of-trump-faces-anti-semitic-avalanche\/\">drew a long stream of anti-Semitic tweets<\/a> after he tweeted an anti-Donald Trump op-ed from The Post by Robert Kagan under the headline \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/this-is-how-fascism-comes-to-america\/2016\/05\/17\/c4e32c58-1c47-11e6-8c7b-6931e66333e7_story.html?hpid=hp_no-name_opinion-card-b%3Ahomepage%2Fstory\">This is how fascism comes to America<\/a>.\u201d The messages were filled with epithets and the very worst wishes that human beings can pass along.<\/p>\n<p>Weisman responded by retweeting the nastiness, a move that raised awareness on Twitter about the abuse.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JerryHollabaugh\">@JerryHollabaugh<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/deutsche_physik\">@deutsche_physik<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonathanweisman\">@jonathanweisman<\/a> in fact, Jews are the biggest murderers of Levantines, so it&#8217;s pro-Semitic to hate them.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Andrew Auernheimer (@rabite) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rabite\/status\/733358321294409728\">May 19, 2016<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"flex-embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonathanweisman\">@jonathanweisman<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iVqpMu22pO\">pic.twitter.com\/iVqpMu22pO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Timmy Norris (@AgentTimothy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AgentTimothy\/status\/733359737425829889\">May 19, 2016<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>There was more to Weisman\u2019s response: He worked with the New York Times social-media desk to round up offensive material that was sent at him. As Weisman tells it, they then passed along the material to Twitter \u2014 essentially <a href=\"https:\/\/support.twitter.com\/articles\/18311\">filing a complaint under the company\u2019s rules against \u201cabusive behavior<\/a>.\u201d Those rules include this provision:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"citation\">\n<p><strong>Hateful conduct<\/strong>: You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease. We also do not allow accounts whose primary purpose is inciting harm towards others on the basis of these categories.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Twitter responded to the complaint with what appeared to be a boilerplate dismissal: \u201cWe reviewed the account and content reported and are unable to take action given that we could not determine a clear violation of the Twitter Rules surrounding abusive behavior. We\u2019re happy to revisit our decision if circumstances change or if you can provide additional context. If you have additional information to share that would improve our understanding of the situation, please send it our way,\u201d Twitter wrote in a response to New York Times growth strategy editor Ari Isaacman Bevacqua. (Weisman said he\u2019d flagged some of the offending material on his own but didn\u2019t get a response from Twitter).<\/p>\n<p>Then! According to Weisman, he has received notice that about nine Twitter accounts have been suspended pursuant to his whistleblowing. \u201cSuddenly I get all these reports back saying this account has been suspended,\u201d says Weisman, counting them up on the phone. Some of the accounts he\u2019d reported were not suspended, he said. \u201cSo I don\u2019t really know what their decisionmaking is,\u201d he says. \u201cI don\u2019t know what is considered above the line and what isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A move to Facebook, says Weisman, brings more accountability to social-media discussions. \u201cOn Facebook, you\u2019re supposed to use your real name, you\u2019re supposed to have a verifiable email,\u201d he says. Though compliance with such rules may be spotty, \u201cin general you can\u2019t be egregious, you can\u2019t have an account that says, \u2018I hate everybody.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deputy Washington editor has stopped short of deleting his Twitter account. \u201cI think it\u2019s good for everybody to get off Twitter \u2014 actually read some articles for a while,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The Erik Wemple Blog has asked Twitter about its actions in this case and is awaiting a reply. In a recent piece on \u201cTwitter\u2019s anti-Semitism problem,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/698965\/twitters-anti-semitism-problem-is-exactly-why-twitter-has-a-growth-problem\/\">Paul Smalera wrote on Quartz<\/a>: \u201cTwitter, perhaps desperate for growth, has left its signup process wide open to abuse. There essentially is no gatekeeper, which is why it is laden with trolls. We remain committed to letting the Tweets flow. However, there is a clear distinction between freedom of expression and conduct that incites violence and hate.
