Really morally reprehensible?<\/p>\n<p>Tabletmag&#8217;s ratio of nonsense to quality is about two to one. Surely many Jews, not just me, tire of this hysteria about Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Just as women have survived for millennia by learning how to maneuver those who are bigger and stronger than them, so too Jews have survived for millennia by their wiles. <\/p>\n<p>One quality I enjoy about Jews is their emotional openness. They&#8217;re passionate about life. Sometimes, though, this heart-on-the-sleeve attitude has a dark side. <\/p>\n<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/scroll\/202650\/trump-supporters-vs-the-renegade-jew\">Armin Rosen writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s give credit where it\u2019s due: As far as troll-baiting headlines go, &#8220;Renegade Jew&#8221; is pretty excellent\u2014and yes, morally reprehensible, too.<\/p>\n<p>David Horowitz&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/2016-presidential-race\/2016\/05\/15\/bill-kristol-republican-spoiler-renegade-jew\/\" onclick=\"__gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/2016-presidential-race\/2016\/05\/15\/bill-kristol-republican-spoiler-renegade-jew\/', 'attack');\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attack<\/a> on William Kristol on Breitbart.com, in a piece called &#8220;Bill Kristol: Republican Spoiler, Renegade Jew,&#8221; is a jambalaya of tedious media self-references if you excise the &#8220;renegade Jew&#8221; bit: A right-wing figure attacks a second, more prominent right-wing figure on an alt-right website\u2014you\u2019re asleep already, aren\u2019t you? But when served with a pithy, two-word epithet and a frisson of the world\u2019s oldest hatred\u2014Jew hatred, that is\u2014a hit piece on the editor of <em>The Weekly Standard<\/em> is enough to foment a trending topic on Twitter. It spawned an unintentionally <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/daveweigel\/status\/732195021160632321\" onclick=\"__gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/twitter.com\/daveweigel\/status\/732195021160632321', 'lyrical turn of phrase');\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lyrical turn of phrase<\/a> that seems<b> <\/b>destined for ironic re-appropriation.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">True confessions: I *wish* someone would call me a Renegade Jew. It sounds very Shoshannie Oakley.<\/p>\n<div class='narrow-only mobile-print-ad'><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imsnews.com\/home.php?page=magPage&#038;pubid=9417\" onclick=\"__gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.imsnews.com\/home.php?page=magPage&amp;pubid=9417', '');\"><img src='\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/large-print.png'\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&mdash; emily nussbaum (@emilynussbaum) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/emilynussbaum\/status\/732312099830022145\" onclick=\"__gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/twitter.com\/emilynussbaum\/status\/732312099830022145', 'May 16, 2016');\">May 16, 2016<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In context, \u201crenegade Jew\u201d was clearly intended as a blunt ethnic slur, and had apparently little to do with the substance of Horowitz\u2019s loopy and disorganized attacks on Kristol, who is notably anti-Trump. The story, which pilloried the &#8220;renegade&#8221; Kristol for reportedly organizing a third-party conservative challenger to Trump and Hillary Clinton, included a lengthy digression about Mike Tyson\u2019s autobiography, and a series of bizarre asides about a phantom U.S. intervention in Egypt which did not in fact occur, at least not in real life as the majority of the non-David Horowitz community understands it.<\/p>\n<p>The logic of the \u201crenegade Jew\u201d headline becomes clear only in the piece\u2019s final paragraph. \u201cI am a Jew who has never been to Israel and has never been a Zionist in the sense of believing that Jews can rid themselves of Jew hatred by having their own nation state,\u201d Horowitz (who also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jamie_Weinstein\/status\/732224999306625024\" onclick=\"__gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jamie_Weinstein\/status\/732224999306625024', 'wrote his own headline');\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote his own headline<\/a>) felt it necessary to state. \u201cI am also an American (and an American first), whose country is threatened with destruction by the same enemies\u201d as Israel, he continues, specifically \u201cIran, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah, ISIS, and Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>To weaken the only party that stands between the Jews and their annihilation, and between America and the forces intent on destroying her, is a political miscalculation so great and a betrayal so profound as to not be easily forgiven.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m a Jew, Horowitz writes, but not the double-dealing, Israel-visiting, non-America firster type of Jew, a category into which some percentage of Jews\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/scroll\/201656\/what-fuels-trump-supporting-twitter-trolls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">few of them Trump-supporting<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/scroll\/201656\/what-fuels-trump-supporting-twitter-trolls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">, one can assume<\/a>\u2014implicitly fall.<\/p>\n<p>That final paragraph is an artless machine gun spray of ethno-religious insinuation, and as fundamentally uninteresting as any other bigoted wheeze. But coming from David Horowitz, \u201crenegade Jew\u201d is also a notable milestone in an anguished political journey, one that\u2019s made a distinct impression on American political discourse and thus takes on a special significance in such Trumpian times as these.<\/p>\n<p>Horowitz began his career as the radical leftist son of pro-Stalinist parents. He participated in the anti-war movement, helped to found <a href=\"http:\/\/inthesetimes.com\/about\/\" onclick=\"__gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/inthesetimes.com\/about\/', 'In These Times');\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In These Times<\/a>, edited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/books\/97\/02\/16\/reviews\/970216.powers26t.html\" onclick=\"__gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/books\/97\/02\/16\/reviews\/970216.powers26t.html', 'Ramparts magazine');\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ramparts<\/em> magazine<\/a>, and become personal friends with Huey Newtown. The murder one of Horowitz\u2019s friends at the hands of her fellow Black Panther Party members in the mid-70s shocked Horowitz into one of the iconic ideological conversions in late-20th century American politics. Horowitz\u2019s 1996 memoir <em>Radical Son<\/em> became a landmark chronicle of American political culture\u2019s disillusionment with New Left utopianism, and as Akiva Gottleib noted in a remarkable 2012 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/jewish-news-and-politics\/98401\/david-horowitz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">profile<\/a> of Horowitz for Tablet (the opening line of which is: &#8220;The first thing that David Horowitz wanted me to know was that he rarely leaves the house anymore\u201d), Horowitz\u2019s 2000 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Art-Political-Other-Radical-Pursuits\/dp\/1433266776\" onclick=\"__gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Art-Political-Other-Radical-Pursuits\/dp\/1433266776', 'pamphlet');\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pamphlet<\/a> &#8220;The Art of Political War&#8221; was admired by Karl Rove and endorsed by dozens of Republican state party chairmen.<\/p>\n<p>In Gottlieb\u2019s telling, Horowitz, who had gained notoriety for organizing Islamofascism Awareness Weeks on college campuses in the late 2000s, had transposed a radical leftist\u2019s teleological urgency\u2014he \u201chas spent the past quarter-century in a mode of permanent apocalypse,\u201d Gottlieb writes\u2014onto an opposite ideology and an opposite political sensibility. Horowitz\u2019s allies on the right had not repaid his passion for propaganda, or appreciated his bracing moral clarity. \u201cIn 2012, his books are not just ignored by <em>The New York Times<\/em>, but by <em>The Weekly Standard<\/em> and <em>National Review,<\/em>\u201d writes Gottlieb. \u201cThere are plenty of conservatives who don\u2019t like my manner,\u201d Horowitz said. \u201cIt\u2019s too aggressive, too Jewish, too leftist.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why is it morally reprehensible to call somebody a &#8220;renegade Jew&#8221;?
