{"id":90244,"date":"2016-03-17T09:02:42","date_gmt":"2016-03-17T17:02:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=90244"},"modified":"2016-03-17T09:02:42","modified_gmt":"2016-03-17T17:02:42","slug":"jewish-trans-woman-named-senior-white-house-lgbt-liaison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=90244","title":{"rendered":"Jewish trans woman named senior White House LGBT liaison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This makes me proud to be Jewish.<\/p>\n<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.jewishjournal.com\/nation\/article\/jewish_trans_woman_named_senior_white_house_lgbt_liaison\">JTA<\/a>: Less than a year after becoming the first openly transgender person to serve in the White House, Raffi Freedman-Gurspan has been promoted to serve as its senior liaison to the LGBT community.<br \/>\nFreedman-Gurspan, a Honduras native who was raised in Brookline, Massachusetts, by Jewish parents, will serve as the White House\u2019s \u201clead point of contact\u201d for LGBT groups, BuzzFeed News reported Monday.<br \/>\nMara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, Freedman-Gurspan\u2019s former employer, praised the appointment.<br \/>\n\u201cRaffi\u2019s skills and personality make her the exact right person for this important job,\u201d Keislin told BuzzFeed.<br \/>\nFreedman-Gurspan, who is in her late 20s, was \u201ca powerful leader for trans inclusion\u201d in her Brookline synagogue, Temple Beth Zion, according to the Jewish LGBT advocacy group Keshet. She also was active in the Jewish Student Union as an undergraduate at St. Olaf College in Minneapolis.<br \/>\nAlthough Freedman-Gurspan was the first transgender White House staffer, another Jewish woman, Amanda Simpson, was the first transgender individual to hold a position in the U.S. executive branch. President Barack Obama appointed Simpson in 2010 to senior technical adviser in the Bureau of Industry and Security at the Department of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lukeford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/raffi_539_332_c1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-90245\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lukeford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/raffi_539_332_c1-300x185.png\" alt=\"raffi_539_332_c1\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-90245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/raffi_539_332_c1-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/raffi_539_332_c1.png 539w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This makes me proud to be Jewish.
