{"id":8891,"date":"2009-05-06T12:49:13","date_gmt":"2009-05-06T20:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=8891"},"modified":"2009-05-06T12:54:19","modified_gmt":"2009-05-06T20:54:19","slug":"whos-your-rebbe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=8891","title":{"rendered":"Who&#8217;s Your Rebbe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day, I was disciplining a wrongdoer while screaming, &quot;Who&#8217;s Your Rebbe?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I then proceeded to give a very complicated Talmudic discourse inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/hirhurim.blogspot.com\/2009\/05\/whos-your-rebbe.html\">this blog post on HirHurim<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"fullpost\">It seems that R. Yehudah assumes that you can only have one <em>rebbe<\/em> while both R. Meir and R. Yossi accept that you can have more than one. It is, therefore, noteworthy that R. Yehudah and R. Meir disagree on the subjects that he must teach you in order to be a <em>rebbe<\/em>. The Gemara (<em>Avodah Zarah<\/em> 19a-b) strongly recommends learning texts from only one teacher but learning methods of analyzing multiple texts from more than one teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, if a <em>rebbe<\/em> must be someone who taught you to analyze texts, and we accept the advice from <em>Avodah Zarah<\/em> 19a-b that you should learn this skill from more than one person, then either you have more than one <em>rebbe<\/em> or your <em>rebbe<\/em> has to teach you other subjects as well. R. Yehudah chooses the latter &#8212; you can have only one <em>rebbe<\/em> but he can teach you other subjects. R. Meir chooses the former &#8212; you can have more than one <em>rebbe<\/em> but he must teach you to analyze texts.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Tzvee posts: &quot;Can you say conflicts of interest?
