{"id":88156,"date":"2016-02-21T16:38:12","date_gmt":"2016-02-22T00:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=88156"},"modified":"2016-02-21T16:38:12","modified_gmt":"2016-02-22T00:38:12","slug":"indians-fight-over-affirmative-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=88156","title":{"rendered":"Indians Fight Over Affirmative Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is there any country that has made peace with affirmative action?<\/p>\n<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-35624547\">From the BBC<\/a>:<br \/>\nIndia\u2019s constitution, adopted in 1950, inaugurated the world\u2019s oldest and farthest-reaching affirmative action programme, guaranteeing scheduled castes and tribes \u2013 the most disadvantaged groups in Hinduism\u2019s hierarchy \u2013 not only equality of opportunity but guaranteed outcomes, with reserved places in educational institutions, government jobs and even seats in parliament and the state assemblies.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe logic was simple: they were justified as a means of making up for millennia of discrimination based on birth.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn 1989, the government decided to extend their benefits to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) \u2013 those hailing from the lower and intermediate castes who were deemed backward because they lacked \u201cupper caste\u201d status.<\/p>\n<p>\nAs more and more people sought fewer available government and university positions, we witnessed the unedifying spectacle of castes fighting with each other to be declared backward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is there any country that has made peace with affirmative action?
