In 1990, \u201cSuperior Court\u201d was cancelled, and Levin took a reporting job with NBC\u2019s Los Angeles affiliate. He shared desk space with another general-assignment reporter, Kent Shocknek, who later became the anchor of the morning newscast. At the time, Shocknek told me, the station had more reporters than cameramen; Levin, he recalled, perfected \u201ca great trick\u201d to secure a crew, \u201cregardless of the merit of his story.\u201d Shocknek explained, \u201cHe would be on the phone, setting up an appointment, and then he would slam the phone down, and yell, \u2018I got it! This is the guy! We have to get him before he leaves!\u2019 I can\u2019t tell you how many times I had to wait for a crew because Harvey convinced the dispatcher that he had the story of the year, every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n

…\u201cHarvey has no problem publicly shaming you,\u201d a former assignment-desk producer told me. \u201cHe used to say, to all of us, \u2018My fucking dogs are smarter than you!\u2019 You become like a battered child. He beats you down, but the second you\u2019re about to say, \u2018Screw this place,\u2019 he gives you a compliment, and you live for that.\u201d The former TMZ photographer recounted that Levin once screamed, \u201cI could get a monkey to do your job!\u201d and, on another occasion, \u201cDo you want me to draw this out in crayons for you fucking idiots?\u201d The former news reporter said that, on one occasion, Levin compared his staff to \u201ca roomful of handicapped people.\u201d Rory Waltzer, another former cameraman, told me, \u201cHarvey Levin would have been a great dictator: he is charming enough so that you want to follow him, but terrifying enough so that you don\u2019t want to fail.\u201d<\/p>\n
