Luckily,<a title='http:\/\/bradbirzer.com\/' href=\"http:\/\/bradbirzer.com\/\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/bradbirzer.com\/']);\">Bradley Birzer,<\/a> the <a title='http:\/\/kirbycenter.hillsdale.edu\/resources\/bradleyjbirzer' href=\"http:\/\/kirbycenter.hillsdale.edu\/resources\/bradleyjbirzer\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/kirbycenter.hillsdale.edu\/resources\/bradleyjbirzer']);\">Russell Amos Kirk Professor of History<\/a> at Hillsdale College, has written what may be the definitive Kirk biography <a title='http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Russell-Kirk-Conservative-Bradley-Birzer-ebook\/dp\/B00WNGD0O2\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1448298722&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=bradley+birzer' href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Russell-Kirk-Conservative-Bradley-Birzer-ebook\/dp\/B00WNGD0O2\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1448298722&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=bradley+birzer\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Russell-Kirk-Conservative-Bradley-Birzer-ebook\/dp\/B00WNGD0O2\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1448298722&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=bradley+birzer']);\"><em>Russell Kirk: American Conservative<\/em><\/a>. It will hopefully have the valuable effect of showing how what masquerades as \u201cAmerican conservatism\u201d has almost <a title='http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/when-will-intercollegiate-studies-institute-disassociate-itself-from-notorious-racist-russell-kirk' href=\"http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/when-will-intercollegiate-studies-institute-disassociate-itself-from-notorious-racist-russell-kirk\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/when-will-intercollegiate-studies-institute-disassociate-itself-from-notorious-racist-russell-kirk']);\">nothing to do with the vision or values<\/a> of the man who once defined it.<\/p>\n<p>Birzer\u2019s impressive accomplishment is especially noteworthy because there\u2019s been no lack of Kirk biographies. Two such works, <a title='http:\/\/janolofbengtsson.com\/2012\/09\/29\/w-wesley-mcdonald-russell-kirk-and-the-age-of-ideology\/' href=\"http:\/\/janolofbengtsson.com\/2012\/09\/29\/w-wesley-mcdonald-russell-kirk-and-the-age-of-ideology\/\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/janolofbengtsson.com\/2012\/09\/29\/w-wesley-mcdonald-russell-kirk-and-the-age-of-ideology\/']);\">one<\/a> by my late colleague <a title='http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/posts\/in-memoriam-w-wesley-mcdonald' href=\"http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/posts\/in-memoriam-w-wesley-mcdonald\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/posts\/in-memoriam-w-wesley-mcdonald']);\">H. Wesley McDonald<\/a> and the other by <a title='https:\/\/www.bookdepository.com\/Postmodern-Imagination-Russell-Kirk-Gerald-Russello\/9780826217202' href=\"https:\/\/www.bookdepository.com\/Postmodern-Imagination-Russell-Kirk-Gerald-Russello\/9780826217202\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.bookdepository.com\/Postmodern-Imagination-Russell-Kirk-Gerald-Russello\/9780826217202']);\">Gerald Russello<\/a>, were published by University of Missouri Press with my heartfelt recommendations. But neither book shows the breadth and exhaustiveness of Birzer\u2019s Herculean research.<\/p>\n<p><a title='http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Conservative-Intellectual-Movement-America-Since\/dp\/1933859121' href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Conservative-Intellectual-Movement-America-Since\/dp\/1933859121\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Conservative-Intellectual-Movement-America-Since\/dp\/1933859121']);\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-79484\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/vdare-live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/08030747\/georgenashconservativemovement-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"georgenashconservativemovement\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a> Clearly the author was aiming at being thorough. He covers just about everything his subject published and left behind in his correspondence over a fifty year period. Unlike the commendable works of McDonald and Russello, Birzer is not offering an engaging picture of Kirk, viewed from a particular angle. He is telling us everything that one might care to know about a leading figure of the post-World War Two \u201cConservative Intellectual Movement\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But aside from his obvious appreciation of Kirk as a mentor, Birzer may have undertaken this labor of love to rescue his subject from the oblivion to which Conservatism Inc. has consigned him. After the publication of <em><a title='http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Conservative-Mind-Burke-Eliot\/dp\/0895261715' href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Conservative-Mind-Burke-Eliot\/dp\/0895261715\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Conservative-Mind-Burke-Eliot\/dp\/0895261715']);\">The Conservative Mind<\/a> i<\/em>n 1953, Kirk was considered the leading thinker of the American Right. Today, a widely-consulted list of the one hundred most influential conservative books by <a title='http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/list\/show\/3921.Best_Conservative_Books' href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/list\/show\/3921.Best_Conservative_Books\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/list\/show\/3921.Best_Conservative_Books']);\">Goodreads<\/a> doesn\u2019t even bother to mention Kirk\u2019s once-widely praised books <em>The Conservative Mind<\/em>and <em><a title='http:\/\/www.kirkcenter.org\/index.php\/bookman\/article\/the-many-roots-of-american-order\/' href=\"http:\/\/www.kirkcenter.org\/index.php\/bookman\/article\/the-many-roots-of-american-order\/\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.kirkcenter.org\/index.php\/bookman\/article\/the-many-roots-of-american-order\/']);\">The Roots of American Order<\/a>.<\/em> Meanwhile, <a title='http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/sorry-jonah-jewishdemocrat-alliance-not-ending-anytime-soon' href=\"http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/sorry-jonah-jewishdemocrat-alliance-not-ending-anytime-soon\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/sorry-jonah-jewishdemocrat-alliance-not-ending-anytime-soon']);\">Jonah Goldberg\u2019s <em>Liberal Fascism<\/em><\/a> places fifth on the same list.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also been an increasing trend of publications such as <em>National Review<\/em>promoting some of Kirk\u2019s intellectual opponents, such as the late <a title='http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/posts\/sanctuary-and-secession' href=\"http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/posts\/sanctuary-and-secession\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/posts\/sanctuary-and-secession']);\">Harry Jaffa<\/a>, into conservative icons [<a title='http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/396197\/harry-jaffa-rip-richard-brookhiser' href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/396197\/harry-jaffa-rip-richard-brookhiser\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/396197\/harry-jaffa-rip-richard-brookhiser']);\"><em>Harry Jaffa, RIP<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>by Richard Brookhiser, <em>National Review,<\/em>January 12, 2015]. Jaffa stressed \u201cequality as a conservative principle\u201d and viciously disparaged Kirk whenever the occasion presented itself. In his work, Birzer <a title='https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=j9-OCgAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PA191&amp;lpg=PA191&amp;dq=having+gone+in+the+direction+of+Russell+Kirk,+toward+a+Burkean+tradition-oriented+conservatism.&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=YCZBTG_128&amp;sig=2lUItC9EYoDzYC2SJ3t9pH3zMMI&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwi4vZH8jLDKAhUEWSYKHTa5BoMQ6AEIHjAA#v=onepage&amp;q=having%20gone%20in%20the%20direction%20of%20Russell%20Kirk%2C%20toward%20a%20Burkean%20tradition-oriented%20conservatism.&amp;f=false' href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=j9-OCgAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PA191&amp;lpg=PA191&amp;dq=having+gone+in+the+direction+of+Russell+Kirk,+toward+a+Burkean+tradition-oriented+conservatism.&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=YCZBTG_128&amp;sig=2lUItC9EYoDzYC2SJ3t9pH3zMMI&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwi4vZH8jLDKAhUEWSYKHTa5BoMQ6AEIHjAA#v=onepage&amp;q=having%20gone%20in%20the%20direction%20of%20Russell%20Kirk%2C%20toward%20a%20Burkean%20tradition-oriented%20conservatism.&amp;f=false\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=j9-OCgAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PA191&amp;lpg=PA191&amp;dq=having+gone+in+the+direction+of+Russell+Kirk,+toward+a+Burkean+tradition-oriented+conservatism.&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=YCZBTG_128&amp;sig=2lUItC9EYoDzYC2SJ3t9pH3zMMI&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwi4vZH8jLDKAhUEWSYKHTa5BoMQ6AEIHjAA#v=onepage&amp;q=having%20gone%20in%20the%20direction%20of%20Russell%20Kirk%2C%20toward%20a%20Burkean%20tradition-oriented%20conservatism.&amp;f=false']);\">quotes<\/a> Jaffa-disciple and Reagan biographer Steven Hayward, who extolls Reagan for having saved \u201cconservatism\u201d from a fate worse than death\u2014that is, from \u201chaving gone in the direction of Russell Kirk, toward a Burkean tradition-oriented conservatism.\u201d [<a title='http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2011\/07\/the-vindication-of-harry-jaffa.php' href=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2011\/07\/the-vindication-of-harry-jaffa.php\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2011\/07\/the-vindication-of-harry-jaffa.php']);\"><em>The Vindication of Harry Jaffa<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> PowerLineBlog, July 4, 2011]<\/p>\n<p>Birzer is understandably upset by this, and by Jaffa\u2019s relentless invective against Kirk as someone who had been \u201crabid in his denigration and disparagement of the Declaration of Independence and of the principle of human equality.\u201d But Kirk\u2019s critics are writing generally as defenders of the present version of \u201cliberal democracy.\u201d Meanwhile, they attribute a \u201ccounterrevolutionary\u201d impetus to a political holding action that barely even delayed the assault of radical egalitarianism. The truth is Russell Kirk became a convenient punching bag for the Establishment, and men like Jaffa simply swung away.<\/p>\n<p>As Birzer surely recognizes, Kirk was never in tune with American political realities. His <a title='http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2004\/sep\/11\/20040911-110008-6887r\/?page=all' href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2004\/sep\/11\/20040911-110008-6887r\/?page=all\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2004\/sep\/11\/20040911-110008-6887r\/?page=all']);\">\u201cgothic imagination\u201d <\/a> and his fondness for English romantic critics of the Industrial Revolution never fit in with what passed for the American Right, especially in political and journalistic circles. Kirk\u2019s gifts, like those of his friend Flannery O\u2019Connor, were literary. On this point I agree entirely with my longtime adversary David Frum, who depicted Kirk as <a title='http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Conservative-Mind-Burke-Eliot\/dp\/1467934666' href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Conservative-Mind-Burke-Eliot\/dp\/1467934666\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Conservative-Mind-Burke-Eliot\/dp\/1467934666']);\">an aesthetic conservative<\/a> who left behind an arresting literary vision. Kirk offered us \u201ca vivid and poetic image\u2014not a program, an image\u201d of what a good society would look like. [<em><a title='http:\/\/www.newcriterion.com\/articles.cfm\/The-legacy-of-Russell-Kirk-5053' href=\"http:\/\/www.newcriterion.com\/articles.cfm\/The-legacy-of-Russell-Kirk-5053\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.newcriterion.com\/articles.cfm\/The-legacy-of-Russell-Kirk-5053']);\">The legacy of Russell Kirk<\/a>, New Criterion,<\/em> 1994]<\/p>\n<p>Kirk\u2019s version didn\u2019t fit with the Beltway. Kirk\u2019s vision was <a title='http:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/articles\/a-scottish-remembrance-of-russell-kirk\/' href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/articles\/a-scottish-remembrance-of-russell-kirk\/\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/articles\/a-scottish-remembrance-of-russell-kirk\/']);\">premodern <\/a> and aligned with early nineteenth-century classical conservatism. Kirk praised its defense of social hierarchy, its stress on the sacramental and supernatural elements of human experience, and Kirk\u2019s revulsion for all efforts at homogenizing human societies. There was nothing in this vision that could possibly appeal to the present Republican establishment or what calls itself mendaciously the conservative movement. I speak as Kirk\u2019s personal friend\u2014Birzer presents me as his subject\u2019s political ally in the Sisyphean task of opposing the (probably inevitable) <a title='http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/whats-in-a-name-the-curious-case-of-neoconservative' href=\"http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/whats-in-a-name-the-curious-case-of-neoconservative\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/whats-in-a-name-the-curious-case-of-neoconservative']);\">neoconservative <\/a> takeover of Conservatism Inc.<\/p>\n<p>And there may be very little in Kirk\u2019s vision that could now translate into any political movement, even of the Right. The current celebration of Donald Trump as the bane of the Leftist-neocon establishment may have much to recommend it. But what I and many VDARE.com readers like about Trump has nothing to do with what Kirk set out in <em>The Conservative Mind<\/em> as \u201ccanons of conservatism.\u201d Trump is not defending the diversity of human experience or inherited social hierarchy. He is simply taking a <a title='http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/the-trump-wrecking-ball-the-washington-cartel-and-the-jews' href=\"http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/the-trump-wrecking-ball-the-washington-cartel-and-the-jews\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/the-trump-wrecking-ball-the-washington-cartel-and-the-jews']);\">wrecking ball<\/a> to the Leftist establishment.<\/p>\n<p>Even Kirk had to compromise to a changing American society.
