We\u2019ve all heard this argument: it\u2019s almost always made when intelligence testing is mentioned. It\u2019s often made by people who are, otherwise, highly scientifically literate: you wouldn\u2019t catch them arguing that climate change is a myth or that vaccines might cause autism. But saying that IQ tests are useless is just as wrong as these notions: in fact, decades of well-replicated research point to IQ tests as some of the most reliable and valid instruments in all of psychological science.<\/p>\n<p>So what does an IQ test\u2014which might consist, for example, of shape-based puzzles, timings of how quickly you can check through lists of meaningless symbols, memory tests, and vocabulary measures\u2014actually tell you? The strongest relation is perhaps unsurprising: an IQ score is highly predictive of how people will do in school. One <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0160289606000171\" target=\"_blank\">huge study<\/a> found that IQ scores at age 11 correlated .8 (on a scale of -1 to 1) with school grades at age 16. Surely this gives us some basis for calling these measures \u2018intelligence tests\u2019. But that\u2019s just the beginning: higher IQ scores are predictive of more <a href=\"http:\/\/apsychoserver.psych.arizona.edu\/JJBAReprints\/PSYC621\/Kuncel_Hezlett_Current%20Directions%20in%20Psychological%20Science-2010%20(Cog%20Ability%20Testing%20Hiring%20and%20Admissions).pdf\" target=\"_blank\">occupational success<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0160289606001127\" target=\"_blank\">higher income<\/a>, and better <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC516648\/\" target=\"_blank\">physical<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4170757\/\" target=\"_blank\">mental<\/a> health. Perhaps the most arresting finding is that IQ scores taken in childhood are predictive of mortality: <a href=\"http:\/\/ije.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/40\/3\/626.short\" target=\"_blank\">smarter people live longer<\/a>, and this association is still there after controlling for social class. So much for \u201cjust how good you are at IQ tests\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Neuroscientists and geneticists have also made good progress in understanding human intelligence. Meta-analyses of hundreds of studies confirm that people with <a href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2512128\" target=\"_blank\">larger brains<\/a> tend to get higher scores on IQ tests, and research on more specific brain regions and features <a href=\"http:\/\/www.larspenke.eu\/pdfs\/Deary_Penke_Johnson_2010_-_Neuroscience_of_intelligence_review.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">continues apace<\/a>. We know from studies of twins, and from studies done directly on DNA, that intelligence test scores are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/mp\/journal\/v20\/n1\/full\/mp2014105a.html\" target=\"_blank\">heritable<\/a>: that is, many of the intelligence differences between people are due to genetics. We\u2019ve just begun to find some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/mp\/journal\/v20\/n2\/abs\/mp2014188a.html\" target=\"_blank\">specific genes<\/a> that might be responsible for these differences.<\/p>\n<p>Because it has been linked to genetic and neural features, and because it seems highly stable across the lifespan, people make the mistake of assuming intelligence is immutable. Your IQ score, they think, is set in stone, condemning you to a poorer life if it\u2019s below-average. But this is a mistake: there\u2019s nothing in principle to suggest we can\u2019t raise people\u2019s IQ scores, at least to a degree (though many recent attempts to do so have been <a href=\"http:\/\/englelab.gatech.edu\/2013\/redick-et-al-20132c-wm-training2c-jepg.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">non-starters<\/a>). Indeed, IQ scores have been rising inexorably across the years, in a process called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4152423\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flynn Effect<\/a>, for (non-genetic) reasons that aren\u2019t yet clear. Another mistake is to think that anyone has ever claimed that an IQ score \u2018sums up\u2019 a person; this is another falsehood, since all IQ researchers would readily admit that personality, motivation, and a host of other factors\u2014including luck\u2014are all critical for success in life.<\/p>\n<p>It would be foolish to deny that there are any skeletons in IQ testing\u2019s closet. Many (though by no means all) of the originators of the tests were involved with the eugenics movement in the early 20th Century, and it\u2019s absolutely reasonable to be appalled at some of the uses to which IQ tests were originally put. But these concerns are irrelevant to the main question of whether an IQ score, taken today, can tell you anything about a person: facts are facts, and the validity of intelligence test scores is amply backed by voluminous evidence.<\/p>\n<p>As all the studies linked above show, IQ tests are useful in a wide variety of situations, from education to medicine to the world of work. We need IQ tests to help us understand how the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prgs.edu\/content\/dam\/rand\/www\/external\/labor\/aging\/rsi\/rsi_papers\/2011\/Lachman4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">brain age<\/a>s, and how we might be able to help it do so more healthily. We need IQ tests to help us work out how to boost people\u2019s intelligence, and thus to boost their productivity. In effect, they argued that retarded murderers were sub-human and (like violent animals) could not be held to human standards.<\/p>\n<p>So how do we tell if murderers are \u201cretarded\u201d? There is only one way: IQ tests.<\/p>\n<p>The next time a bleeding heart lefty moans about some governor executing a retarded murderer, tell them that there is no such thing as \u201cintelligence\u201d and that the murderer (who probably was determined to be \u201cretarded\u201d because his IQ was 75 or less) was just as smart as anyone else since \u201call IQ scores tell you is how well you do on IQ tests\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>If you REALLY want to mess with their heads, tell them that IQ tests are racially biased and the retarded murderer really was just as smart as a 100 IQ white murderer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stuart Richie writes: \u201cIQ tests just measure how good you are at doing IQ tests\u201d.
