…\u201cSchlonged\u201d isn\u2019t just \u201cschlong\u201d plus \u201c-ed.\u201d Some background: I grew up on Long Island in the 1950s and \u201960s, not too far from Trump\u2019s Queens neighborhood and around the same time. Where we lived, \u201cschlonged\u201d was an utterly commonplace slang term meaning \u201cclobbered\u201d or \u201cthoroughly defeated.\u201d It gained particular currency after the Mets set up shop. It had nothing to do with male anatomy, at least not in the minds of anyone I knew…<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s extraordinary appeal arises from a widespread feeling in many precincts, particularly among working-class white men in flyover country, that government and the politicians who run it aren\u2019t addressing the things that worry them. They\u2019re constantly being talked down to, given a runaround in rivers of fancy rhetoric. They\u2019re reprimanded for being rude, for not attending to the troubles and sensitivities of various other unfortunates, while their own mounting troubles are ignored.<\/p>\n

Now along comes a rich guy \u2014 what American doesn\u2019t love a winner? \u2014 and gives it back to the smarty-pants crowd in exactly the language they\u2019d use if they had the chance. And what\u2019s the response to Trump\u2019s \u2014 and their \u2014 complaints? Of course: He\u2019s reprimanded for being rude, for not attending to someone else\u2019s troubles. Q.E.D.<\/p>\n

But wait \u2014 what\u2019s their guy\u2019s latest offense? Why, misusing Yiddish (whatever that is)! What better way to stir the conscience of Kansas? <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
