{"id":82211,"date":"2015-12-13T19:15:55","date_gmt":"2015-12-14T03:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=82211"},"modified":"2015-12-13T19:15:55","modified_gmt":"2015-12-14T03:15:55","slug":"marrying-your-way-up-the-academic-ladder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=82211","title":{"rendered":"Marrying Your Way Up The Academic Ladder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/ms-jd.org\/blog\/article\/marriage-means-advancement\">BLOG<\/a>: I read with great interest in <a title=\"Harvard's Lonely Women\" href=\"http:\/\/thecareerist.typepad.com\/thecareerist\/2011\/03\/suk-first-asian-am-womantenured-at-hls.html\" target=\"_blank\">today&#8217;s Careerist column<\/a> about Harvard Law School granting tenure to Professor Jeannie Suk.&nbsp; Vivia Chen stated that she was surprised to learn that Professor Suk was the first Asian-American woman granted tenure at Harvard, and then looked briefly at the lack of diversity among female tenured professors at the school.<\/p>\n<p>This is a fertile topic of conversation, but there was something that struck me as particularly interesting in the article.&nbsp; In the original post, Chen said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Call me naive, but I was genuinely shocked that this big, prestigious   bastion of liberalism didn&#8217;t have a tenured woman of Asian descent   until this year. (Harvard announced Suk&#8217;s tenure last fall.)&nbsp; The much  smaller Yale Law School, which has 60 full-time  faculty members to  Harvard&#8217;s 100, has two&#8211;Amy Chua and Jean Koh Peters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(The article was corrected after this was written to state that Professor Koh Peters was actually a clinical professor, and thus not tenured, making Yale&#8217;s population of tenured Asian-American professors the same as Harvard&#8217;s:&nbsp; one.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What caught my eye was the fact that by my unofficial count, these three women&#8211;Professors Suk, Koh Peters, and Chua&#8211;were all themselves married or related to other law professors.&nbsp; Professor Suk is married to <a title=\"Professor Noah Feldman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/faculty\/directory\/index.html?id=544\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Noah Feldman<\/a>, who came to Harvard as a tenured professor back in 2007 from NYU.&nbsp; Professor Chua, she of the <span style=\"font-family: mceinline;\"><em>Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother<\/em> fame, is married to <a title=\"Professor Jed Rubenfeld\" href=\"http:\/\/www.law.yale.edu\/faculty\/JRubenfeld.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Yale Law Professor Jed Rubenfeld<\/a>, who <a href=\"http:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2011\/01\/yale-law-professor-amy-chua-writes-in-praise-of-crazy-asian-moms\/#more-52192\" target=\"_blank\">Above the Law<\/a> describes as &#8220;<\/span>a Yale law professor, overachiever, and certified hottie, just like his wife<span style=\"font-family: mceinline;\">.&#8221;<\/span>&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/globetrotter.berkeley.edu\/people3\/Koh\/koh-con1.html\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Koh Peters is the sister<\/a> of former dean <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.yale.edu\/faculty\/HKoh.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Harold Koh of Yale Law School<\/a> (who is now the Legal Advisor to the Department of State).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BLOG: I read with great interest in today&#8217;s Careerist column about Harvard Law School granting tenure to Professor Jeannie Suk.&nbsp; Vivia Chen stated that she was surprised to learn that Professor Suk was the first Asian-American woman granted tenure at &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=82211\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[16281,619],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-82211","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-college","category-marriage"],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/82211","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=82211"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/82211\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":82212,"href":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/82211\/revisions\/82212"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=82211"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=82211"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=82211"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
