{"id":80522,"date":"2015-11-27T07:51:23","date_gmt":"2015-11-27T15:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=80522"},"modified":"2015-11-27T07:51:23","modified_gmt":"2015-11-27T15:51:23","slug":"nyp-hasid-who-hanged-herself-was-forced-to-marry-her-first-cousin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=80522","title":{"rendered":"NYP: Hasid who hanged herself was forced to marry her first cousin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2015\/11\/24\/sister-found-hanged-was-forced-to-marry-her-first-cousin\/\">New York Post<\/a>: The Hasidic woman who <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2015\/11\/22\/sister-of-hasidic-jumper-found-hanging-from-parents-staircase\/\">committed suicide four months after her sister<\/a> also killed herself suffered years of depression following her forced marriage to a first cousin, a family insider told The Post on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Mayer, 31, of Borough Park, <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2015\/11\/23\/sister-of-ex-hasid-who-jumped-to-her-death-commits-suicide\/\">who hanged herself Sunday<\/a>, had a nervous breakdown on the eve of her arranged wedding about five years ago \u2014 and had already endured years of physical and mental abuse by relatives, according to the source.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Her suicide] was a family mental-health and abuse issue on top of being forced into marriage with her first cousin,\u201d the source said, recalling how the union was annulled just months later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEver since [her marriage], she has been in and out of mental hospitals,\u201d the source explained. \u201cShe had been coerced by her mother\u2019s side of the family\u2019\u2019 to marry her cousin. \u201cShe married the son of the mother\u2019s sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some members of the Brooklyn family apparently didn\u2019t find out about Sara\u2019s torment until just recently.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9955753\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9955753\" src=\"https:\/\/thenypost.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/10888579_739575739453734_6584992376124712928_n.jpg?quality=100&amp;strip=all&amp;w=218&#038;strip=all\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Faigy Mayer committed suicide in July.<span class=\"credit\">Photo: Facebook<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Growing up, some relatives \u201ckept calling her retarded, ugly, etc. We didn\u2019t know this until later,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n<p>The source added that Sara and her younger sister Faigy \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2015\/07\/21\/woman-leaps-to-death-off-rooftop-bar-patrons-keep-drinking\/\">who jumped to her death from a Manhattan rooftop bar in July<\/a> \u2014 had been seeking advice from a family member for their depression, even though the relative wasn\u2019t a licensed therapist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Williamsburg, it was so bad that the rabbis got together and they put a poster up warning the community about her and the lack of her credentials,\u201d the source said. \u201cBut despite the rabbis\u2019 warning, people are still seeing her for family therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have lost two girls in less than a year shows that something is up with this family.
