Mearsheimer is the most important political scientist of the past forty years.<\/p>\n<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/posts\/are-china-and-the-u-s-a-long-term-enemies\">John Derbyshire writes<\/a>: After taping <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/radios\/radio-derb-the-magic-dirt-theory-the-republican-tax-debate-and-the-great-wall-of-sand-et-cetera\">this weekend&#8217;s Radio Derb<\/a>, with its segments about U.S.-China tensions and geostrategy, I was browsing through my blog roll when I came across <a href=\"http:\/\/infoproc.blogspot.com\/2015\/10\/the-tragedy-of-great-power-politics.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/infoproc.blogspot.com\/2015\/10\/the-tragedy-of-great-power-politics.html', 'this']);\" >this<\/a> at Steve Hsu&#8217;s site.<\/p>\n<p>The whole thing is over an hour and a half long, but well worth the time if you&#8217;re interested in the topic.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kd-1LymXXX0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On the realist side, arguing that big nations will always seek supremacy and the U.S.A. will (and should) always act to prevent the rise of peer competitors, are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/about\/staff\/b\/peter-brookes\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/about\/staff\/b\/peter-brookes', 'Peter Brookes']);\" >Peter Brookes<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mearsheimer.uchicago.edu\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/mearsheimer.uchicago.edu\/', 'John Mearsheimer']);\" >John Mearsheimer<\/a>.  For the other side, arguing that a Metternichian (and Derbyshirean) balance of power is possible and should be sought, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilsoncenter.org\/person\/robert-daly\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.wilsoncenter.org\/person\/robert-daly', 'Robert Daly']);\" >Robert Daly<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Kevin-Rudd\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Kevin-Rudd', 'Kevin Rudd']);\" >Kevin Rudd<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Metternichians won on a TKO by the usual method of debate scoring, but Brookes and Mearsheimer made some powerful arguments that, I must admit, gave me pause.<\/p>\n<p>Mearsheimer was particularly effective with both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usfa-or.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=36&amp;Itemid=36&amp;limit=1&amp;limitstart=1\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.usfa-or.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=36&amp;Itemid=36&amp;limit=1&amp;limitstart=1', 'sabre and foil']);\" >sabre and foil<\/a>.  This, for example, at <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kd-1LymXXX0?t=5434\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/youtu.be\/kd-1LymXXX0?t=5434', '1h30m34s']);\" >1h30m34s<\/a> into the show.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>They [i.e. Daly and Rudd] have a theory, and it revolves around agency, or diplomacy.  They believe that the competition can be managed; and that&#8217;s very different from the way I think about the issue.<\/p>\n<p>But I want to ask you this: When you look at American diplomacy over the past twenty years, does that give you confidence&#8230; [<em>laughter<\/em>]&#8230; seriously, does that give you confidence that American leaders can manage this relationship over the next thirty or forty years? [<em>more laughter<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>You know about Afghanistan; you know about Iraq; you know about Libya; you know about Ukraine; seems to me the United States has the Midas Touch in reverse.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I still prefer the Metternichian solution, but are our politicians smart enough to get us to it?
