Subsequently, a Claims Resolution Tribunal was set up by federal Judge Edward Korman to adjudicate some 32,000 claims, mainly from Jews who had lost their deposits in Swiss bank accounts. Gideon Taylor, executive vice president of the Claims Conference, which transfers the authorized awards to the claimants, said that so far some $254 million had been paid to 3,000 applicants. He said that the award to the Altmann family was the largest paid out so far.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Altmann said she&rsquo;s planning to make donations to some Jewish causes, although she has no connections to the Los Angeles Jewish community. &ldquo;Unfortunately, I wasn&rsquo;t really raised Jewish,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;My husband, whose family came from Poland, was very strongly Jewish. We used to have arguments about that. I agreed to have a ritual circumcision for our sons, if he let me have a Christmas tree.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maria_Altmann\">From Wikipedia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Maria Altmann<\/strong> (born <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/February_18\" title=\"February 18\">18 February<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1916\" title=\"1916\">1916<\/a>), was a refugee of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazism\" title=\"Nazism\">Nazi<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Austria\" title=\"Austria\">Austria<\/a>, living in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netherlands\" title=\"Netherlands\">Netherlands<\/a> briefly before moving to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hollywood\" title=\"Hollywood\" class=\"mw-redirect\">Hollywood<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/California\" title=\"California\">California<\/a>, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" title=\"United States\">United States<\/a>. Her ultimately successful attempts to regain five <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gustav_Klimt\" title=\"Gustav Klimt\">Gustav Klimt<\/a> paintings owned by her family that had been <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazi_plunder\" title=\"Nazi plunder\">stolen by the Nazis<\/a> during World War II made international headlines more than five decades after the war&#8217;s end, and involved the courts of two nations.<\/p>\n<p>Born <strong>Maria Bloch-Bauer<\/strong>, in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vienna\" title=\"Vienna\">Vienna<\/a>, she married Fritz Altmann in 1937. Fritz Altman was arrested in Vienna in 1938 and held hostage at the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dachau_concentration_camp\" title=\"Dachau concentration camp\">Dachau concentration camp<\/a> to force his brother Bernhard, by then safely in France, to transfer the B. Altmann textile factory into German hands. Fritz was released and the couple fled to America via England in 1940, leaving behind most of their property, including jewelry that later found its way into the hands of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hermann_G%C3%B6ring\" title=\"Hermann G&ouml;ring\">Hermann G&ouml;ring<\/a>. Maria was naturalized an American citizen in 1945; the couple had four children.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Altmann is a niece of Czech sugar magnate <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Ferdinand_Bloch&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" class=\"new\" title=\"Ferdinand Bloch (page does not exist)\">Ferdinand Bloch<\/a>, who owned a small collection of artwork by the Austrian master <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gustav_Klimt\" title=\"Gustav Klimt\">Gustav Klimt<\/a>, including two portraits of his wife <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adele_Bloch-Bauer\" title=\"Adele Bloch-Bauer\" class=\"mw-redirect\">Adele Bloch-Bauer<\/a>. During the Nazi <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anschluss\" title=\"Anschluss\">Anschluss<\/a> of 1938, these paintings were looted. Bloch died in 1946, soon after <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\" title=\"World War II\">World War II<\/a>, leaving his estate to a nephew and two nieces, including Altmann. By this time, after the paintings had changed hands a number of times, five of these paintings were in the possession of the Austrian Government.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bslaw.net\/schoenberg.html\">Attorney E. Randol Schoenberg<\/a> represented Altmann in both cases. If he received the normal compensation of 30% to 40% for these type of cases, he would&#8217;ve snagged about $100 million for his work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bslaw.net\/schoenberg.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/Images\/photos\/randolschoenberg.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Altmann began her litigation with the Austrian government to claim the paintings in 1999.
