Instead, one of the messages he delivered was on the importance of having a \u201cfall guy\u201d at all times.<\/p>\n \u201cIn case y\u2019all not going to decide to do the right thing, if y\u2019all got a crew, you got to have a fall guy in the crew,\u201d Carter said in a video headlined \u201cRookies learn life lessons from [Warren] Sapp and Carter\u201d that\u2019s no longer on the NFL\u2019s Web site…<\/p>\n The video drew attention after an ESPN the Magazine article in which Chris Borland talked about the NFL culture and his decision to retire because of the dangers of head injuries. He described the symposium to Steve Fainaru and Mark Fainaru-Wada, who wrote:<\/p>\n \u201cGet yourself a fall guy,\u201d Borland says one of the former players advised. The former player, whom Borland declined to name, told the rookies that if they ran into legal trouble, their designated \u2028fall guy would be there to take the blame and, if necessary, go to jail. \u201c \u2018We\u2019ll bail him out,\u2019 \u201d Borland says the former player assured them.<\/p>\n Borland was appalled. \u201cI was just sitting there thinking, \u2018Should I walk out? What am I supposed to do?\u2019\u2009\u201d he recalls.
