{"id":65876,"date":"2015-03-16T09:58:31","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T17:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=65876"},"modified":"2015-03-16T09:59:08","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T17:59:08","slug":"hate-speech-not-banned-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=65876","title":{"rendered":"Hate Speech Not Banned On Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/mindbodypolitic.com\/2015\/03\/15\/campus-hate-speech-that-wasnt-punished\/\">Blog post<\/a>: In light of all the &#8220;shocked, shocked, I tell you&#8221; reactions to<a href=\"http:\/\/mindbodypolitic.com\/2015\/03\/11\/charlie-hebdo-versus-sigma-alpha-epsilon\/\"> the video 0f an Oklahoma frat house&#8217;s racist chant<\/a>, I pulled up some other instances of &#8220;hate speech&#8221; at American universities that somehow passed muster.<\/p>\n<p>None of the people in these cases was in their teens, none was  drunk, none was speaking to a private group of like-minded associates, as the Oklahoma boys were.<\/p>\n<p>1. A black activist and visiting professor at North Carolina State University addressed a Howard University Law school panel in 2005 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carolinajournal.com\/exclusives\/display_exclusive.html?id=2869\">advocated exterminating all white people on the planet <\/a>as the only solution to black problems.<\/p>\n<p>2. After the Washington Navy Yard shootings, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2013\/09\/23\/u-kansas-professor-suspended-after-anti-nra-tweet\">tenured professor at the University of Kansas tweeted that he hoped that the next shooting victims would be the sons and daughters of the NRA <\/a>(National Rifle Association) since, in his view, they were responsible for the Navy Yard massacre.<\/p>\n<p>He was put on indefinite leave, the only one on this list who was punished.<\/p>\n<p>3. In 2012, <a href=\"https:\/\/tallbloke.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/24\/prof-richard-parncutt-death-penalty-for-global-warming-deniers\/\">Dr. Richard Parncutt advocated the death penalty for influential deniers of global warming.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>4.  In 2001, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.experienceproject.com\/stories\/Havent-Lost-My-Virginity\/1269918\">Mary Daly, a feminist professor at Boston College, advocated an evolutionary process that would result in a drastic reduction in the male population<\/a>, as the only way to &#8220;decontaminate&#8221; the world.<\/p>\n<p>5.  Pete Singer, renowned bioethicist,  argued in a published book that<a href=\"http:\/\/www.equip.org\/article\/peter-singers-bold-defense-of-infanticide\/\"> &#8220;<strong>Killing a defective infant is not morally equivalent to killing a person,&#8221;  and &#8220;Sometimes it is not wrong at all.&#8221; <\/strong><\/a>Princeton gave him tenure in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>6.  The chairwoman of the University of Michigan&#8217;s Communications department <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/inthesetimes.com\/article\/17426\/we_cant_all_just_get_along\">wrote an oped whose first line was &#8220;I hate Republicans.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> Further on in the piece, she referred to what she felt as<strong> &#8220;loathing.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7.  University of Rhode Island history professor Erik Loomis said this about the National Rifle Association&#8217;s executive vice-president, Wayne LaPierre: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cnsnews.com\/blog\/walter-e-williams\/hating-america\">&#8220;I want Wayne LaPierre&#8217;s head on a stick.&#8221; <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>8.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frontpagemag.com\/2014\/dgreenfield\/amiri-barakas-most-anti-semitic-poems\/\"><strong>Rutgers University professor and poet Amiri Baraka has written, &#8220;&#8221;I got the extermination blues, jew-boys<\/strong>&#8230;.&#8221;  <\/a>and &#8220;We want dagger poems in the slimy bellies of the owner-Jews.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>None of the views expressed above (even number 7, which was surely an actionable threat) received any serious punishment, except no. 2.<\/p>\n<p>However, the next two views did get a swift and severe response from the university:<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>A tenured professor at Marquette University (a Catholic university, mind you) was fired<\/strong> for having criticized a graduate student who <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefire.org\/gay-marriage-flap-marquette-moves-fire-tenured-prof\/\">refused to allow any opposing view on gay marriage in her classroom.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>10.  <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/13\/world\/middleeast\/professors-angry-tweets-on-gaza-cost-him-a-job.html?_r=0\">An offer of tenure at the University of  Illinois was rescinded <\/a><\/strong>after the candidate tweeted angry comments about Israel&#8217;s Gaza offensive in the summer of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>So what&#8217;s the distinction between the first eight incidents and the last two?<\/p>\n<p>The first eight all conform to the larger goals of the New World Order elites; the last two constitute obstacles to those goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blog post: In light of all the &#8220;shocked, shocked, I tell you&#8221; reactions to the video 0f an Oklahoma frat house&#8217;s racist chant, I pulled up some other instances of &#8220;hate speech&#8221; at American universities that somehow passed muster.
