{"id":6513,"date":"2008-10-20T13:52:51","date_gmt":"2008-10-20T21:52:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=6513"},"modified":"2008-10-20T13:52:51","modified_gmt":"2008-10-20T21:52:51","slug":"homeless-take-shelter-in-a-succah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=6513","title":{"rendered":"Homeless Take Shelter In A Succah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/blogs.courant.com\/susan_campbell\/2008\/10\/shelter-in-a-sukkot.html\">From the Hartford Courant<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"asset-content entry-content\">\n<div class=\"asset-body\">\n<p><span style=\"display: inline;\" class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.courant.com\/susan_campbell\/sukkah%20001.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"285\" width=\"380\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.courant.com\/susan_campbell\/sukkah%20001-thumb-380x285.jpg\" alt=\"sukkah 001.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 20px; display: block; text-align: center;\" class=\"mt-image-center\" \/><\/a><\/span>Donna Berman, Hartford&#8217;s coolest rabbi and executive director of&nbsp;the city&#8217;s&nbsp;Charter Oak Cultural Center, recently built a sukkah on the grounds of the historic center.&nbsp;According to Jewish tradition, sukkot were built by the Israelites as they traveled through the desert &#8212; and once again when&nbsp;they settled in Canaan, as shelters during harvests.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, the structures are&nbsp;flimsy, but&nbsp;what it lacks in strength, Charter Oak&#8217;s sukkah&nbsp;makes up for&nbsp;in beauty. The sheet-walls are&nbsp;covered with brightly painted pictures, including pleas that God bless Israel, Carmen, and Hartford U.S.A.&nbsp;It sits amid the center&#8217;s wildly successful community garden.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Berman and others who helped build the sukkah know that at night, homeless people move in.&nbsp;Last Friday, the rabbi&nbsp;noticed someone had put carpeting on&nbsp;the ground within&nbsp;the structure.&nbsp;Later, she met the two men who were living there,&nbsp;and told them they were absolutely welcome to stay, but they had to remove their things&nbsp;during the day.<\/p>\n<p>The structure would normally come down this week, but since&nbsp;people are living in it, the rabbi says she will&nbsp;leave it up.
